Foran" Subject: SMML in Nebraska Chris Christensen: Good to hear from a fellow Nebraskan. I am alive and well in Ogallala, contact me at lforan@megavision.com. I build ships (1/600 and larger) and aircraft (1/144). Also N-scale model railroad (under construction). I don't believe we are very far apart, I am just 50 miles west of North Platte. Les Foran ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SantMin Subject: Re: Laser decals >> What about Colour Laser Jet Decals. We've just purchased a new Colour laser printer for our office. I guess the only drawback with this is that you can't print white. But things like Duck Egg Green (Sky) you can. Has anybody tried colour laser printers? With what results? << I've made very good decals on a color laser copier and it should be the same. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: "Jeff Herne, Director, NJAHOF" Subject: Aircraft Oriented IPMS chapters Hi Chris, I have noticed that some shipbuilders are scorned by clubs that are primarily airplane oriented. Get a clue people!! While this *may* be true elsewhere in the country, it's not the case with NJ IPMS... Our President is an avid 1/700 modeler, I (VP) build damn near everything if it floats, our webmaster and newsletter editor is also an avid ship modeler. We also have alot of SMML based ship modelers in our group, including Gary Kingzette, Martin Quinn, Bob LaPadura, Mike O'Connor, and myself. I have yet to attend a club meeting where there hasn't been at least a couple of ship models on the contenst table, and more on the 'in-progress' tables. In fact, at one meeting, we actually had more ships than armor and aircraft combined!! I do tend to agree however, that we, as ship modelers, are overlooked by our peers, even though our work (in my opinion) is about the most complicated form of modeling of the lot... Good evening Gentlemen (I'm not aware of any of the gentle sex being involved in this query)! Are there any published or unpublished authors out there who have had any dealings with Conway Maritime Press, and the Chrysalis Books Group , of Bramley Road, London? If so, I would invite your comments, thoughts, or feelings. (In confidence). Yours "Aye" John Lambert ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: Mike Settle Subject: Re: Gold Lettering >> I am looking for a source of peel-off lettering for the transom of a boat. I need gold script about 1/2 inch high, and block about 1/4 inch high. I have seen black and white block vinyl lettering in stationery stores, but have not located the gold in block or script. Web searches have not worked. << Gene, If dry transfers will work, try Letraset. They will make custom orders, but I do not know what they charge for such work. http://www.letraset.com/us/info/products/Transfers-Revitalising-rub-downs-Custom-Dry-Transfer.asp Mike Settle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: William Weckel Subject: Re: Color Laser Printer Decals I've tried to do decals on my color laser (OKI 7200n). Results were pretty disappointing. I think you'll have much better luck with an inkjet printer. Color lasers were just not designed for high resolution graphic work. Thats why the ALPS was such a success with graphic artists and photographers, and why it's persisted for so long in the market. If you need custom, single run decals, you may consider contacting Mike Grant. Aircraft modelers are probably familiar with him. You may spend more $ in trial and error DIY decals than you would having him do them for you. http://mikegrantdesign.com/decals Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: William Weckel Subject: Decal Idea Just an idea, maybe a good one, maybe not... How about SMML coming up with a comprehensive decal sheet. You can cram a heck of alot of stuff on the average size waterslide sheet. There could be a series of hull numbers, plimsol marks, victory scoreboards, campaign ribbons and battle E's, u-boat emlems and "nose art" like the duck on the Snowberry, and on and on... List members decide on the subjects to include and scales. The one sheet could then be used for a wide range of projects. I noticed from the roll call that there are quite a few graphic designers and illustrators present (I have a degree in graphic design)... anyway, design the sheet, contract a professional printer and have it produced - we all chip in. no idea if this would be cost-feasible or not. Something on the order of the sheet that IPMS does each year for the nationals? again, just an idea... Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "Michael D'Silva" Subject: Airfix Bounty & Endeavour Hi Chris, Suggest you try www.kingkit.co.uk They specialize in second-hand and out of production kits. I got my Endeavour from them about a year ago. Good luck in your quest! I work at Boston University as a programmer/analyst in the administrative data center. My favorite models include Heidi Klum, Tyra Banks, Gisele ...... As a child I started modeling and built just about anything and everything, as long as I thought it was interesting. I stopped building for a long while when I went to college then joined the workforce, but I did take that unstarted Entex Titanic with me when I moved into my own place. The Titanic is still unstarted, but it has been joined by hundreds of other kits that I will of course finish in my lifetime (or 1000 years whichever comes first). The kits I colle... um, intend to build, include many ships, but also some Star Wars, Star Trek, real space, funky cars (I like those Tom Daniels show rods), movie cars, numerous aircraft, and all other kinds of odds and ends. Some of my other interests include Stephen King, my PT Cruiser, and volunteering on the USS Salem. Working on restoring the 1:1 scale USS Salem has taken much of my spare time. I am also involved in a Sea Scout group that was fortunate enough to get a donation of 36.5 foot sailboat (C-1972 Pierson 365 Sloop.) We took the boat for a week-long trip down the coast, through the Cape Cod Canal, Woods Hole across to Martha's Vineyard and home again last summer. I have the 1963 edition of "Merchant Ships" which has 1:2000 profile drawings plus basic specs on all ships over 150 feet loa. Smaller vessels are done in 1:1000. I'd recommend this book to modellers. Even though the scale is kind of small, this book is good for distinguishing among the different vessels. The scheme of organization -- by mast, derrick, deck and stack configuration --is a bit unwieldy for quick reference but the index is very good. The markings, pennants and colors section for shipping lines is of great use. It was published by the Journal of Commerce and Shipping News in London. There may be later editions, though I have found none. << There is at least one later edition published in 1978/79 by Marinart in three volumes in a slipcase. The drawings are port profiles as in the earlier books but do not show any differentiation between hull, superstructure or funnel colors being an overall monochrome grey. The coverage is, however, extensive 3,484 in Vol 1, 1,434 in Vol 2 and 4,238 in Vol 3, a total of over 9,000. Each drawing carries specifications but there is no section on funnel colors found in earlier editions. TB is illustrator and editor for Vol 1, and worked with two other illustrators, as well as being Consultant Editor, on Vols 2 and 3. TB was a prolific writer in the 30's and 40's writing some of the "Dumpy" books for Sampson Low, Marston & Co inc "All the World's Fighting Ships", and "What Ship is That?", as well as the conventional "Ships of the World's Battlefleets". It is good to see that his work is still of interest. Michael London ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From: "Craig Bennett" Subject: Re: Skywave Benson/Livermore Question... Hi Concerning the USS FORREST DD-461 question. Since the Forrest was built in 1942 . So she was modernized as the war progressed. All your friend has to do is pick a year when he served on it. Then compare it to the kits available. Perhaps he should check out the internet for websites and buy the classic warship book on the Benson / Gleaves to give a reference to work with. Also the Forrest was scrapped in 1946. Craig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From: Edwparent Subject: Warship Profile #36 I own a copy of the subject issue subtitled "United States Monitors in the Civil War" On pages 283-286 is a 28" x 10" foldout of a Tippecanoe (Canonicus) class monitor. It includes a beautifully detailed and coloured longitudinal section as well as a smaller plan view, stern elevation and hull contour body plan. It is too big for me to scan but I can paste together a couple of 11" x 17" copies in B/W and snailmail them. Dave or anyone contact me off line if interested. The Airfix listing is up on the site already and the others will follow as quickly as possible. If you are after anything specific and it is not on the site - simply drop us a line for pricing etc. While we are on the subject of pricing the Aussie dollar has been getting stronger and this means benefits to everyone who is looking at WEM products. We have just reduced the prices across the whole range of WEM goodies, so now is the time to grab some paint, or some resin or photoetch - maybe even splurge on a kit or two.
