I noted an awful lot of drainage slits which the purist would presumably want to open out. It does look like an interesting candidate for conversion to radio control... << I agree that in the detailed pictures that I have seen, the kit looks to be very good, with a lot of correct details (unlike the old Revell Type VIIB of 1:144 scale). As a member of the SubCommittee, I did want to comment on the conversion to radio control (R/C) mentioned. First, I don't do R/C, but instead do display models of submarines, as well as write detailed articles for the SubCommittee magazine on submarine history & design (latest is over 4000 words and a dozen pictures and plans on the Type XXI). Anyhow, I do go to the Regattas and see a lot of the R/C submarines. The hulls available are usually fiberglass, not polystyrene. I don't know how well a polystyrene hull would do with dunkings and running into obstacles. Most of the deck "gear" (railings, guns, periscopes, masts, etc.) on R/C subs are metal. Plastic components would probably be subjected to damage from bottom snags and other items in the water (yes, the R/C guys do lose even the metal parts!). Second, the normal glues we use will fall apart in water. So will 5 minute epoxy (30 minute does set up to be reasonably waterproof). There are several other cautions I would have about converting a styrene kit to R/C. That said, folks in the SubCommittee have done this in the past, and I am sure that it will be done with the new Revell kit. My point (and I do have one!) is that R/C can be very demanding & tricky, so seek out some help over at the SubCommittee if you want to attempt this. There are also people who frequent this group (Hello, Keith!) who have extensive experience. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: SantMin Subject: Re: IPMS and ship models >> I have yet to attend a club meeting where there hasn't been at least a couple of ship models on the contenst table, and more on the 'in-progress' tables. << Jeff, Same goes for the Central Penn Chapter IPMS, we have several ship modelers. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: CapnAgee Subject: Re: SMML in Nebraska Regarding Nebraska SMMlie: Is it true you guys build tractor and farm equipment models for competition? Also, I heard that when asked what the big red 'N' on the University of Nebraska water tower meant, one football player proudly spoke up -- "nowledge." Just kidding, please take this in jest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "David Hathaway" Subject: Warship prfile No 36 - Thanks to everyone Many thanks to everyone for their offers of help on this. I have accepted offers from a couple of people for scans or copies, so thanks to those people who offered but I haven't taken up. The number of responses is indicative of just how brilliant a list this is. Looks like this one has been published and I look forward to seeing it. David ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: "raymond guy" Subject: The Battle of Feline Bay! G.Day all. Am rebuilding my HMS Belfast by Airfix after the Battle of Feline Bay which she lost having been overcome by the weight of a feline posterior which laid waste to all it came into contact with. The source of the destruction has since departed (by natural causes chaps before you accuse me of feline foul play) but has been replaced by two Persians who I am beginning to believe are El Qaeda agents intent on infiltrating and destroying my ship building yards. Security is now in place to prevent any further catattacks including infra-red alarms and heat seeking de-worming pills. To all you SMMLies out there with passive felines count your lucky stars. On a serious note I am using the WEM PE set and a new Belfast kit to replace the parts damaged beyond hope, at the age of sixty-two and with eyesight that should be consigned to the blind school I am battling with the PE parts ,some of which without a magnifying glass I cannot even see! Question for John Snyder, is there a prize for the person who can prove he has used every single PE part from a fret? If there isn't there ought to be!! I have purchased a cheap head magnifying glass which I am now regretting,a slighty more expensive version would not have the distortion that the cheap piece of rubbish has. Just a couple of points on the handling of the PE parts from all you gladiators out there, do you recommend attaching the parts to a piece of adhesive tape once removed from the fret, obviously something not too adhesive, do you add the parts as you go along, bearing in mind that some of the locations are pretty inaccessible once the model is completed? Do you paint your PE parts prior to assembly, will cyanoacrylate strip the paint from the PE and not bond as a result? Do you lay-off the beer the night before in order to have a steady hand the next day? (sorry about that). This is my first venture into the world of PE, the detail is truly fanastic, and some of your models I have seen on the web made with the addition of PE are truly remarkable. May I achieve the same results (not a question just a prayer). I know a lot has appeared in the SMML newsletter on this subject and in order not to bore those who have already been through this process please contact me off-list at rayguy@mweb.co.za. Thanks a million and happy modelling. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Amy" Subject: the gentle sex >> Good evening Gentlemen (I'm not aware of any of the gentle sex being involved in this query)! << While my husband probably wouldn't agree with the gentle part, i am most definitely of the female persuasion just thought i'd let you know there's at least one of us here :) amy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Kelvin Mok Subject: Re: Gold Lettering >> I am looking for a source of peel-off lettering for the transom of a boat. I need gold script about 1/2 inch high, and block about 1/4 inch high. I have seen black and white block vinyl lettering in stationery stores, but have not located the gold in block or script. Web searches have not worked. << The Artists' Supplies shop has a number of rub-on metallic foil, including gold foil - full polish or matte, for gilding objects. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: Randy Ward Subject: Re: 1/350 Scale Ship Models >> Is there a site I can go to to find all manufacturers of 1/350 scale ship models? I know I can go to Rajen's and find the manufacturers, but you can't sort them by scale. Any help is appreciated. << Chuck, you might try copying the Rajen list into your favorite word processor, then deleting anything that isn't the scale you want. You should be left with exactly what you're looking for. Just a thought.
