He served in the RAN for 30 years from 1930 till 1960. Joining in 1930 as a Cadet Midshipman, he went on to serve in many RAN ships including: HMAS Yarra, Perth, Voyager, Nizam, Wyatt Earp, Melbourne II, and commanded Vendetta, Nizam, Quadrant, Murchison, he also served in various staff positions. During his service, he saw action in the Atlantic, Mediterrean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, he was the youngest RAN Officer to command a HMA ship and was "Mentioned in Dispatches - Greece". Lorna & I met Bill in 2001 when we joined the Australian Naval Historical Society and he made us feel very welcome and encouraged us to participate more in the Society's activities. We were priveledged to have met such a sterling officer and gentleman - he will be sorely missed by family and friends. So here's to you Bill, may you sail in your "lovely Nizam" again. Shane & Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Russell_Lessard@aigvalic.com Subject: 1/350 USS Texas Any word yet on plans to create a 1/350 model of the Texas? I've been hearing one would be forthcoming in 2004... but all is quiet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: John Snyder Subject: Re: Color Cops Beware? Hi Gene, There's a lot of truth in what you write. What we've tried to do, first with the Snyder & Short paint chip sets and now with Colourcoats, is to provide the accurate basis for the various paints. From there, it's up to individual modellers to proceed (with fear and trepidation) to modify the colors to reflect degradation and weathering to suit themselves. As for using a Pantone chart: don't do it as a means of understanding paints. The Pantone system is ink-based, and can never replicate paint opacity. If you want to pursue variations in color tone, head down to your local paint store and peruse their fandecks. Man I love it when someone produces some of the modern vessels like this in 1/350 scale! I just took a quick look as my brother was here on a vist, so I couldn't spend too much time "playing". At first glance the Long Beach looks like a wonderful effort. The one thing that I really noticed was the ISW included cast metal parts in this kit. In the past these smaller parts have been a problem with ISW kits due to the fact that resin castings just didn't reproduce the small details well IMHO. These castings are very nice and will be much sturdier than resin parts. Everything ABOVE the bilge keels is cast VERY well. However, the bottom of the hull (below the bilge keels) has LOTS of air bubbles that will need to be dealt with since I plan to mount the model full hulled. Fortunately, where the bubble problem occurs is quite flat and should be easy to fill in all the bubbles. The kit comes with a ton of photo etched parts, many include area-spcific rails which are nicely scaled and fine. The kit also inlcudes decals for the helopad, warning circles (THANKS guys), and hull numbers. The helopad markings were printed as one BIG decal. Not a bad idea, but it leaves a LOT of clear decal film that will need to be removed. Obviously the helopad markings will need to be cut into sections to apply it to the model. The instructions I will wait and pass judgement on later. ISW has had problems in the past with this part of their kits. However, at first glance they appear to be pretty well done. Don't forget that this is only a down-and-dirty review of my first impressions of the kit from the box. Overall the kit looks like a real dandy that will look COOL when finished. Thanks much to ISW for producing a model for us modern naval enthusiasts! This is the first of the next generation of SSNs. The Virginia is also available in 1:192 scale from Don Preul (J&D Productions). IT'S SO LONG THAT IF MY FIVE LITTLE MONSTERS GET AHOLD OF IT, THEY'LL ALL BE BARFIN'. I MUST SAY IN THIER DEFENSE THAT THEY HAVE BEEN MORE HELP THAN HINDRANCE. YES, THEY DO OCCASSIONALLY STEAL PARTS, ETC. I HAVE NOTICED, HOWEVER, THAT WHEN I DROP SOMETHING ON THE FLOOR, I CAN RARELY LOCATE IT WITH MY FAILING, COLORBLIND EYES. watch the cats, they will immediately locate the misguided material for me. in fact, i wouldn't be without at least a couple of them any time i'm doing photoetch. hope this helps, DAVID IN DIXIE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: "D.Przezdziecki" Subject: Re: Borodinos' Colour Sure John, If you have Mielnikov's book "Bronienoscy typa Borodino" look at the photographs inset between pages 48 and 49. Look at the photo captioned "Eskadriennyj brinienosec Orel" (just under a photo of Borodino) and than at the photo of "Borodino" on the other side of the same page. In the same inset there are also two full page photos (two sides of the same page) of Kniaz Suvorov that also seems to show this phenomenon. Interestingly this effect is much more pronounced in the bow area and fades towards midships.... For those who don't have access to Mielnikov's book please look at photo: http://www.warships1.com/RUSpbb19_KSouvorov_prtfrt.jpg Since, until proven otherwise, I am still supporting standart black/yellow scheme I might not be doing myself any favours here but I have to mention that in addition to the photos quoted in this post, I have seen quite a few other photos of those ships which seemed to suggest different shade (or different reflectiveness of paint) between armor belt area and the rest of the hull.
