Testors has released the four old Hawk molds and have even used used the same type of plastic that they used in the originals. They sell for $3.99 each. To refresh your memory they are the 1/600(?) Campbell Coast Guard Cutter, a Fletcher class destroyer and a LST. Also the PT boat but I don't remember what scale that was. On a side note, I recently the 1/700 icebreaker Soya from HLJ in Japan. This a tiny but colorful model that comes with a Cessna, a Beaver and a Bell H-13(?, the bubble two-seater with a frame tail!! At $20 it's not cheap but it sure was worth it to me. There is a photograph of it next to a Wind-class icebreaker. It makes an comparison with the Loose Cannon Eastwind. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From: Richard Sweeney Subject: Master and Commander I had some problems with the Movie.... Some of my problems were cinetographically, I would not have chosen to make most of the movie in the appearence of late afternoon, fog, Mist, or Night. The mood was too dark. I understand the darkness below decks, but not on deck off the coast of Brazil, which is usually sunny, and in the Galapagos, also usually sunny. Historically.... I question the Abilities of a Captain who intentionally disables a bank of cannon going into a battle with a ship twice his size, and I question the competency of a captain that having Dis-masted his foe, forgets that the fallen Mast will be in his way when he tries to Board the enemy. I do need to see the movie again though, I need to check my memory. I know he ordered the rear wheels removed from the gun carriages for Greater elevation... (LOL.) but I don't remember him removing the elevation wedges, or rather I think they were still in place, Had he removed them he would have had about the same elevation, maybe greater elevation and the guns could have been reloaded and run out again. A good Gunner, knew to use the roll of the ship to help elevation also. Those guns could be elevated higher than the Gun port openings for securing purposes there by taking up less deck space under normal sailing conditions. Oh, and I liked how they waited until the ship was awash and in a rain storm, going "'round the Horn" BEFORE they "battened down the Hatches". And how long does it take to put canvas down and drive in the wooden battens BEFORE you let extra water into your ship's hull and soak your crew?? Aside from which, You're not fighting high winds to do it if you do it in advance. I'm told in the book, "Far side of the World." the Ship is an American Frigate, not a "French Privateer". When she was Built the U.S.S. Constitution cost the equivilent of a modern Aircraft Carrier. NO PRIVATEER could afford that, we barely could as a Nation, we only built 5 or 6. By the way, Constitution mounted 24 lbers, not 18 lbers. and usually 55, not her rated 44. "H.M.S. Suprise" would have been pretty badly shot up before she could come within her own gun range of the U.S.S. Constitution. ("Acheron" was a copy of the U.S.S. Constitution, 44 Gun Frigate, built in Boston, Extremely heavy framing and Planking, cannon Balls bounced off of her sides. {"Aye' her sides are made of Iron..." hence, "Old Ironsides" }I've seen Constitution down to her frames, They practically touch each other. Just my take. Though, I'll see any movie with Sailing ships. Of course for that matter, I liked "Pirates of the Carribean" better. I like The Hornblower series better too. (All Fiction, I know) But, At least Hornblower knew enough not to take a 14 gun ship against a 44 Gunner. Or at least after Aubrey disabled his gun carriages that is in effect what he did. Fought a bigger foe, with one arm tied behind his back. Rich Sweeney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From: MPMenache@aol.com Subject: Re: Paddle Steamer Kits In regards to paddle steamers I believe a good one to build is the Airfix "Great Western" When built correctly it turns out to be an impressive model! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "Fox, John" Subject: destroyer and sub kits Hi Does anyone know of any kits (either already released or in the planning stages) of the following: Coontz class DDG in 1/700? Snook and Scamp SSN's in 1/700? Thanks for your help. John Fox ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From: PolTexCW@aol.com Subject: Polish Ship Kits 1) A few years ago I saw a listing in somebody's catalog for a resin model of ORP General Haller or Komendant Pilsudski, Polish gunboats and sister ships (ex Finnish). For the last month I've been going nuts digging through piles of stuff and going through websites but can't find it. Does this ring a bell with anybody? 2) Does anyone know of any kits (other than that mentioned in #1 or those made by Mirage) of Polish naval vessals of the inter-war period? Preferably 1/400, but I'd be interested in knowing about any scale - in any medium - plastic, resin, vac, paper, metal, whatever. Thank you, John Biskupski ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Stephen Varhegyi" Subject: Thanks re Prinz Eugen Thanks to all those who responded to my Prinz Eugen enquiry. Now I'll have something to keep me really busy over the holidays. Now Peter Hall has moved and settled in to the new house and a reasonable state of order exists there, he has now been set a mid-January deadline to complete the Renown, a deadline he is confident he can meet, despite Chistmas and New Year falling during that time period with the kid's school hols. etc.. For those of you who have waited with patience and great expectation, thank you so much for that faith in us. With K 721 the 1/700 QE 1918 release imminent, the RENOWN news is the icing on the cake. You can pre-order the 14 inch long kit on the website at 68.04 GBP. The REVELL 1/72 TYPE VIIC U-BOAT ... I've seen it.. it's fabulous! WEM planned a PE set for this kit after the success of our PE 7201 for the Revell 1/72 S-Boot. Peter Hall, WEM's PE designer, took a look at the almost 3ft long, built up model, in its perspex case, and concluded that this model is so good, he can think of no way to improve it. For those of you who have seen Peter's work, that will tell you how good this model is. The kits will be with the UK distributor on 5th December.. we have a large pre-order in, but have heard that the first production run has already been pre-sold, and many overseas dealers will have to wait for the next production run from Revell, which is exactly what happened with the S-Boat. So.. the UK/EU retail is 39.99 Pounds. The export price is 34.03 Pounds, with air shipping charged at cost. We now know that in the New Year with the second production run, Revell will be raising this price again in January by ten pounds. We are expecting a big influx of orders over the next few days, so make sure you get yours in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. You can drop by the website to pre-order your REVELL kit, and remember to order your COLOURCOATS at the same time: WEM CCO KM 01 Hellgrau 50 WEM CCO KM 03 Dunkelblaugrau WEM CCO KM 11 Schlickgrau 58 Also, if you haven't already had your family order up your modelling related Christmas presents from us yet, get on to it now to avoid any pre-Christmas snarl-ups, especially if ordering from overseas. We at WEM, and the postal services, are now entering our busiest period of the year, and a last-minute order is unlikely to get to you until after Christmas. Many Thanks!
