The following is the query and reply: >> Q. I recall some time ago you responded to a minimum order size for resin accessories (50 bags IIRC). Don't recall any comment on PE sets - I would assume the logistics are a little different. Reply: Yes.... with PE we have different rules. The artwork has to be designed and drawn by Peter Hall, from available plans and photos..obviously there is a fair bit of research here. For a destroyer sized fret, this costs around 400 pounds. Then we have a double sided set of phototools. The cost of this is 160 Pounds. The first PE order has to be for a minumum of 5 sheets at, typically, 16 pounds per A3 sheet. There are 12 O Class sets on an A3 sheet. It is never possible to simply scale down our PE sets due to the demands of the various type and thicknesses of materials. That even includes 1/700 to 1600 scale, as these are etched to very fine toleerances on the same thicknesses Peter always has to re-draw linework to compensate, so you are faced with Peter's time plus the phototool and sheet costs. However, if you want to throw up queries on SMML and STEEL NAVY on whether others would be interested in this, please feel free to do so. Best Regards Caroline Snyder White Ensign Models << The Peter Hall cost assumes minimal new research required. What I was querying about was the possibility of a 1/700 scale L&M set - a scale down from their 1/350 set. The research would be done so the basic costs would be above. As you can see the minimum order would be 60 frets and cost around Pd 640 so around Pd11 each. There are 6 lovely L&M kits done by HP (2 leaders, 2 standard 4.7in and 2 of the 4in variants) which are nice but devoid of PE. I would like to build the lot so could comit personally to about a dozen frets. Any other takers? I also feel there is a market out there for a 1/700 fret for the A-I class destroyers. HP make most of the G class and B-Resina the Hero and oversized Glowworm. However, the B-Resina Glowworm scales out correctly for the C-F classes and some Leaders. With a little cross kitting, it should be possible to make any of the A-I class. I think a scale down on the 1/600 destroyer fret parts for the Hotspur would provide most of the needs. In addition we need a pair of 2pdr singles for the A-D classes (this is on the Flower fret) and a 3in/12pdr with optional shield. The last is the only item that I am not aware is on any WEM current sheet so would need some research. They could throw in the usual extras (single 20mm, twin 20mm, liferaft davits, etc to round out the sheet). I could use a heap, but not all at once! What demand is out there for this? Understand there are 25 volumes, so far. Warship is great stuff, I have considered acquiring additional volumes. But, without an index their utility as modeling reference is limited. Does anyone know if an index exists for Warship? Wonder if Warship will be reproduced CD? Thank you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: "johnny.geldhof17" Subject: Re: Minesweeping Hello, I've written 2 books about the Belgian during WW2. I interviewed a lot of veterans and they told me a lot about minesweeping. During WW2, the Belgian had about 6 minesweepers (better known as MMS or Mickey Mouse Ship) Ships sailed on 200 yards (exactly) from eachother to find magnetic mines. During a sweep, they sailed with 3 shipsnext to eachother, 200 yards from eachother. The officer on the bridge had a kind of equipment to measure the 200 yards exactly, because of the magnetic field between the sweeps. If you need any more information, please contact me. On the local news the other night (I live on the south coast of Britain) I caught a little story re this ship, after her capture she was brought back to the UK and eventually broken up, a large part of her timbers ended up being incorporated in a Mill building in Hampshire (called I believe the Chesapeake mill) this building recently came up for sale with the distinct possibility of it being demolished. The program showed the inside of the building with the ships frames clearly discernable (follow the link below for info) I have heard nothing since this program went out but it would be a disgrace to lose such a valuable historical monument, for both of our countries. When will politicians (especially local ones) learn!!! Great news for Escort lovers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From: Melvinsmith29@aol.com Subject: Re: Blue Water Navy demise There is a lot of talk on steel navy about BWN going out of business and someone else picking up there line. Anyone here have any knowledge of whats happening with this company. They did some of the best 1/350 ships I ever built and I would hate to see them go. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From: "lamkeel" Subject: Help please Hi Ladies and Gents I have been asked the question - "What do the initials W S A mean"? I understand it is of the late WW II period, and something to do with small U.S. Coast Guard Cutters. Your thoughts on this one would be appreciated. Very many thanks. It was news to me. I know that both Skywave and Dragon/DML also have or will have kits of this ship. Would anyone care to comment on these kits?
