The reason for this is that the Floquil Marine Paints were intended to match USN WW2 colors, not modern colors (and they weren't terribly accurate for WW2). So you've got your Spruance in the wrong color to begin with. That aside, you'll want Colourcoats M03 Modern USN Haze Gray and M04 Modern USN Deck Gray, plus M05 Modern USN Flight Deck Gray. It is: Cold War Submarines: Us & Soviet Design & Construction by Norman Polmar and Kenneth Moore. I returned from a business trip and it was awaiting me, having been printed some 8 months after I ordered it. I spent several hours reading & perusing it. On a scale of 1-10 (I'm a harsh grader), I gave it a 15! Yeah, it's THAT good! The authors spent years interviewing key figures and reading material from both sides of the Cold War. It starts just after the Second World War, and looks at each side's diesel and exotic propulsion plants and designs. Early submarine cruise missile and ballistic missile programs are detailed. In the speed section, Albacore and the Skipjacks are highlighted, as is the early Soviet Papa class of high speed sub, as well as the Alfa. It then examines each generation of nuclear submarines on each side (US & Soviet) and the design decisions made with each class. Many but not all of the very good photos are familiar to those of us who have massive sub book collections, but will probably be new to most with "casual" submarine interests. There are superb line drawings of submarines throughout the book, with available internal details on layouts. Such long sought after (at least by me and about three other guys) details as the 1960's CONFORM submarine, a truly remarkable design concept are covered, and there is a picture of a model of the submarine (now I can die in peace). At last I know what it would look like if it had been built! The two "gold standard" books in submarine design are Friedman's two volume account of US Submarines ("US Submarines through 1945" and "US Submarines since 1945") and Polmar's one volume "Submarines of the Russian and Soviet Navies 1718-1990". This book easily belongs with these other volumes. The book is available on Amazon.com for $42, and is worth every penny (or other currency among you) if you have an interest in modern submarines. If you had to own only one book, this is it in my opinion. Wish I could say the same about the just published Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines That Fought the Cold War by Gary E. Weir, Walter J. Boyne. I'm a really Gary Weir fan, and his earlier technical histories of US Submarine construction were superb. Unfortunately, this book contains a fair number of small but irritating mistakes (Nautilus was launched on January 21, 1954 and got underway on January 17, 1954 (!!??) ). Still not a bad read, but I kept wondering how accurate the Russian material was.... Only an 8 out of 10 here. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From: ED_LARYEH Subject: Re: paint My experience with both Colourcoats and Floquil has been good. When I first used floquil (some several years ago) they were the best match I had yet found for the USN color chip cards from floating drydock. There is an important difference between them. Floquil is a water based paint and it does tend to erode faster on models which are subject to frequent handling. I also noticed a slight fading over time in 5-N navy blue. The blue tint tends to become more dark grey (But that is also what happened with the actual paints over time.) I have not used colourcoat 5-N over as long a period and haven't seen any such fading yet. I have also used real Navy Issue Haze Grey on some of my modern USN models (thinned down VERY considerably). I did not feel there was a signifigant difference between any of the three paints in this color except for the poorer durability of the water based floquil. It was easier to apply and thin, but the ultimate requirement for another coat left little advantage. I still use both (assuming I can get floquil). I should also add that I never use an air brush. As far as seeing a slight difference in shade between ships, This actually happens out there in the real world because of weathering and aging so I would certainly not be very worried about it in a group of my models. Could you help me? Best regards, Ms. Jiao Liangmei ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From: "Stephen Varhegyi" Subject: Re: Our Sponsors (an unsolicited testimonial) From: Michael McMurtrey >> I want to put in a good word for Shane and Lorna, owners of Sandle Hobbies and sponsor of this mailing list. On the 12th I ordered a back issue of Plastic Ship Modeler through their web site. On the 14th they acknowledged my order and stated it had been shipped. Today, the 18th (all dates US) I received it via airmail. That's 4 days from Australia to Oklahoma! It was also well-packed in a (reusable!) zip-lock plastic bag inside a sturdy, semi-rigid shipping envelope. I work for a fraternal organization, and we pride ourselves on our services to members, but theirs is better customer service than i have received from most US vendors, and only for one copy of a magazine! I highly recommend them, no matter where in the world you might be. Shane and Lorna, thank you for your service to your customers, and for sponsoring this mailing list. << Here, Here!!! I totally agree. Shane & Lorna deserve a pat on the back. I've ordered things from Sandle Hobbies for delivery in Australia and they've arrived the next day, very well packed as mentioned. I've ordered lots of stuff from model suppliers over the years and Sandle are the most reliable and efficient. Here's to you Shane & Lorna.
