USNA wallowed for years with required steam engineering classes after the Navy had ditched steam powered ships for nucs and turbines. New thinking changed that, and the USNA is much more in tune with the academic needs of the Navy today. These schools build and develop leaders, << I know that's what they are SUPPOSED to build, but I can tell you from personal experience that most of the junior ring-knockers I was around during my Navy days knew lots and LOTS about authority, and precious little about leadership--the main reason I wouldn't have stayed for 20. Most of the senior officers were much better (I'd have gone anywhere, done anything for our Captain and XO), but we had at least one LCDR who should probably never have gone beyond Ensign, and another who wasn't much better--a "user", not a "leader" of subordinates. Hi Keith, >> Also does anyone have a spare copy of the WEM 1/350 Arizona etched brass instruction sheet they could share with me I've misplaced mine. << You should know better than to have to beg and plead on SMML. Watch your mail, Mate, a set is on the way from WEM. Hi Chris, >> I have the approriate WEM colours, however white paint is a bugger to apply any suggestions about getting a solid coat? << Much as I like to brag about Colorucoats' covering power, I ALWAYS prime before applying white paint, regardless of brand. You don't say whether you're brushing or airbrushing, but Peter Hall (who brush paints exclusively) recommends Humbrol spray primer overall. At any rate, apply a light-coloured primer before applying your RN White. A side note to brush painters using Colourcoats After applying Humbrol spray primer, Peter Hall brush-painted his entire 1/350 HORNET using only about 1/2 tin of each colour! I've got two in the closet I've been trying to get to and super detail/cut-away, but kids, laid-off (you'd think I'd have free time...), etc... Can you give us a ballpark figure so I can tell how long I'm going to have to sleep in the garage for buying some of these? Thanks, Nathan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From BSteinIPMS@aol.com Subject The Battle of Feline Bay... There is, apparently, a remedy for those experiencing modeling disasters at the paws of a cat.... http//www.richsalter.btinternet.co.uk Bob Steinbrunn Stillwater, MN Nautical Research Guild ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Julio Pillet" Subject SpanishAmerican war ships plans Hello for all, Excuse me my english, I don't speak well. Thank you for all and happy new year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From John Mianowski Subject USS Arizona Superstructure From "Pwesty" >> This past weekend being the 7 of December there was a lot of stuff on TV about the attack of Pearl Harbor. I was wondering if anybody could tell me what ever happen to the upper part of the wreck Arizona, the stuff that you see in all of the pictures after the attack? I know that some small part of the ship are lying on a out of way place some where in the harbor but I would very much like to know what ever happen to most of the superstructure did the navy dump it all in to sea? << I saw a documentary on TV a couple of years (?) ago, where a big pile of USS Arizona superstructure was in an isolated location on Ford Island. I think some of the main guns were used in shore installations, & probably some other smaller parts were salvaged & reused as well. JM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From RPayne8452@aol.com Subject Battleship Texas One of these days I'll start paying attention...A few weeks back I noticed mention of of a 1/350th resin Battleship Texas mentioned and try as I might, I've been unable to find it. Thought it would have been done by Blue Water Navy but a search this morning in their catalogue showed nothing. Could one of the good members here lead me to the manufacturer? Promise I'll bookmark it this time! bob san antonio ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Kathy/Pirie Sublett" Subject Re Dreadnought and White Paint Mr. Flake gives good advise. The Seals parts set will be a considerable help. The set contains 20 7.6 cm guns which although not accurate are a damn sight better than anything in the currently available Dreadnought kits. For anyone working on 1/700th pre-dreadnoughts, having 3 or 4 of these sets around is a good idea. Re Mr. Quirk's question concerning white it is possible to brush paint white. I just finished doing so, and it took 5 thin coats over a light gray primer to do the job. Patience and resistance to the impulse to pour on the paint are required. However, if you know anyone with an airbrush, I would recommend groveling, bribery, whatever to get them to spray your model. Only yellow is more difficult to get to cover. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From billkaja@earthlink.net Subject Re 1/72 PT Boats I suspect a factor contributing to the low sales of the kit is the fact that it is so available. I would never mail order the kit, when I can find it in every shop, at swap meets, and usually on Ebay for below retail. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Michael Smith" Subject New 1/700 Lexington/Saratoga news Has anyone heard of any plans for a new 1/700 scale kit of the Lexington or Saratoga? I know the Fujimi kit was recently rereleased but my understanding was that there were no changes to the molds. I drew up plans to scratchbuild these a while back when I realized how far off the kits were, but never got around to actually building them. I was actually considering a 1/350 scale kit (since I was drawing the original plans at 1/96 or thereabouts and reducing them and 1/350 looked like it would be a lot easier) but saw the new 1/350 kit that someone is releasing (has it ever come out? and decided that I'd rather save for that than spend a couple of years scratchbuilding. Michael Smith Marshall, Texas ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Thanks re Dreadnought armament Hi Marc, Thanks for your suggestion. I shall order 1 or 2 of the recommended kits. As far as I’m aware, they’re available from Pacific Front Hobbies. Thanks again, Michael D'Silva Victoria, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From PolTexCW@aol.com Subject 1/400 Detail Set Does anyone make generic 1/400 detail sets (pe, resin whatever)? I'm scratch building a series of 1930's warships and anything would be helpful. (I've found pe railings and ladders). Thank you, John Biskupski ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From Kelvin Mok Subject US Marines >> US Marines are actually a part of the Navy. Besides storming beaches and guarding embassies and Naval bases around the world, they are used on certain ships as shipboard security forces, and quick mobilization forces << Interesting point. How did the marines get to guard US embassies when this is a land based duty.? What is the practice of the embassies of other countries particularly those who don't have marines? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out the SMML site for the List Rules, Backissues, Member's models & reference pictures at http//smmlonline.com Check out the APMA site for an index of ship articles in the Reference section at http//apma.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- End of Volume
