Charles P. Cecil D?DR-835, Gearing Class Destroyer during the Korean War. I am interested in building a model resembling this ship? Also I am looking for the U.S.S. Juneau of WW II the Sullivan's served on? << Ron wrote >> Blue Water Navy made kits of both Gearing and Juneau, Yankeemodelworks now owns the molds. Both are excellent kits. USS Juneau is modelled as she was at the time of her sinking. USS Gearing is modelled as commissioned and you'd have to find some references to model her for a Korean War fit. In fact I'm building Gearing now. << Another approach would be 1/700 scale. 1/700 polystyrene kits will be substantially cheaper than 1/350 resin kits. You could use the Skywave Gearing class, (kit W-32) and the ex-Skywave, now Dragon Atlanta class kits as starting points. I think that the only DDR variant ever produced in 1/700 polystyrene was the Albatross Gearing kit (kit 1002), which had parts to make the DDR. If you decide to go the 1/700 route, contact me off list about DDR parts. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D. It is in 1/12 scale (1 foot = 12 inches). Here's the link http//cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2449695840#ebayphotohosting Maybe we could have the next SMMLcon on it? Happy Holidays, Rod ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From John Snyder Subject Concrete Ships OK folks, can anyone come up with the year the first reinforced concrete boat was built, by whom, and in what country? Cheers, John Snyder White Ensign Models ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From John Snyder Subject Re HMS Buxton Hi Richard, BUXTON wore Western Approaches camouflage, consisting of Royal Navy White, Western Approached Blue, and Western Approaches Green. We have all these colors available in our Colourcoats enamels. Best, John Snyder The Token Yank White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com for secure online ordering. Far more ships (and tonnage) were lost to collisions and shipwreck than in combat. There were only three combat vessels actually lost to gunfire, torpedo and mine are as follows San Diego Cruiser 19/7/18 Mined Jacob Jones (DD-61) Destroyer 6/12/17 Torpedoed by U-53 Alcedo Patrol Vessel 5/11/17 Torpedoed by UC-71 In addition to this would be the US Coast Guard Cutter Tampa which was torpedoed by UB-91 on 26/9/18 and the Light Ship (the Light Ship Service did not become part of the USCG unitl 1939) Diamond that was sunk by gunfire from U-140 while on station at Diamond Shoals on 7/8/18. The USN did also lose two transports to enemy action as were a number of Naval Overseas Transport Service (NOTS) ships which were not actually commisioned into the USN. So chronologically, the first combatant ship lost would be the Patrol Vessel Alcedo (a converted yacht). Nat Richards ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From dixielinefan@comcast.net Subject IJN fittings Hello, Thinking about getting an Akizuki hull in 1/100 scale from Scale Shipyards but have some concerns about fittings for IJN ships.Does anybody make any resin, brass or PE for the IJN?It was suggested using some Fleetscale fittings from their 1/96 Yamato but that would only take care of some of it.I`ve never seen any Fleetscale stuff so don`t know how they look.I have very little experience in scratch-building so tackling items like the turrets would be difficult, though I could probably do the superstructure.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, R. Bass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "bert" Subject R.N. cruisers' Ron, Kenya was fitted as built with 12 X 6 inch in four turrets same as the Southampton's and Edinburgh classes, and 8 X 4 inch AA. first eight of the Colony's were so fitted the last three Uganda, Newfoundland and Ceylon had 9 X 6 inch and 10 X 4 inch. all had several smaller guns pom-poms, oerlikens etc 6 torpedo tubes and originally provision for 3 aircraft. Yours Aye bert (TaT) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Ray Cockram Subject Plaster bandages Hi Ullrich, Yes I occasionaly use plaster bandages for creating molds. Usually for things without much detaul such as hulls etc, for highly detailed molds I will use Dental mold making media and then support or reinforce that with plaster bandages. It is a technique I use in my other life as a sculptor. Cheers Ray ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Michael Aono Subject USS North Carolina I am building the superstructure of the USS North Carolina and came across a stumbling block trying to figure out how to build fore most structure. I believe it is an observation tower that has an elliptical shape from the top view. Would anyone know how I would go about creating this? Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From Michael Aono Subject Secretary Class USCG Cutter I am building a 1/144th scale model of a 327 ft. Secratary class Coast Guard cutter. While looking at some photos of the USCG Duane, I noticed the deck looked like it had grain line going parallel to the centerline. Does anyone know if this class of ship had teak decks? Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "Tom Detweiler" Subject Re Revell U-Boat figures Hi Mr. Geldhof, Just use HO scale figures which come in virtually any conceivable pose. Preisser, Italeri and Revell Germany military figures are also 1/76. Because the details are so small on them, faces and clothing can be altered easily with paint to create whatever figure it is you need. I have used HO scale figures for 1/72 models, and for 1/80 wooden ship models, and they look great. Tom Detweiler ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "WEM" Subject WEM 1/350 PE Sets Hi Adrian, Note that I used the phrase "Temporarily Suspended" in relation to PE development. This means that the new 1/350 PE has only been delayed for a matter of a few weeks while Peter gets Renown finished. Look out for the Bismarck/Tirpitz PE first, then the Missouri PE, and THEN the New Jersey PE. BTW, interest is much lower in the New Jersey than the otner subjects (interest being guaged by the number of pre-order....). Cheers!
