Lorna and Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From John Snyder Subject Re First Concrete Boat The WEM research prize goes jointly to Messrs. Wandall and Sublett. Nicely done. Pirie also wrote >> According to Concrete Ships.org, the oldest known concrete ship was a dingy (not a ship as far as I am concerned) built by J.L. Lambot in 1848. << Not a ship in my book either, but my post asked about the first reinforced concrete "boat".... ;^) Incidentally, Lambot's dinghy was really closer to modern ferrocement boats than reinforced concrete ships, as it was built using wire mesh rather than re-bar. To my eye the mounting looks far too tall. Have you seen anything that might suggest that this is the case? Any ideas? And Happy Christmas everyone! << DON"T DO THAT ROBERT!!! At first read, I thought YOU were half way building something! I almost cracked a rib laughing so hard! Anyway, now that the tears have dried up, have a Merry Christmas! That goes to everyone on the list as well, especially the Listmiesters!!(and if you don't celebrate Christmas, have a good whatever it is you do! ) Darren Scannell Ontario, Canada ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Jimmy Bloom" Subject Re Supply Vessels Thanks Colin, and Cap'n Randy for the help on finding offshore vessel models. The Heller kit sounds like the thing. It's probably an early OSV, most likely a UT 704, which were the "Model T"'s of the industry from the 1970s through the 80s when rigs moved further offshore requiring bigger, more powerful ships capable of lugging and unloading the extra supplies required for longer stays and deeper drilling. My messed up hands don't allow me to do anything more than assemble and paint the 1200 scale kit "from the box" so it looks like I'll settle for Heller's overly thick guardrails and companionways. I did find some ready-built models of these vessels. One from Classic Ship Collection of a UT720 anchor-handling tug in 1400 and a "boardroom" model of Seabulk Africa in 1300 scale made for the Seabulk company. Both are exceptionally well detailed and finished. I suppose that most plastic display model companies, unlike the the RC manufacturers, don't find tugs, offshore ships, and the like sexy enough. Again, many thanks and my best wishes to all on the list for a Happy Holiday and may 2004 provide many successful launchings and safe returns to harbor. Jim Bloom ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From David Gregory Subject Re WWI Naval Losses I read somewhere that a US Navy motor launch was sunk by German shore batteries off Nieuport, France in July 1918. It likely was connected with USN air operations, but does anyone have any further information on this craft? Dave G ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From SeaWoodies@aol.com Subject PT Question On the list of future projects in my carport shop is a 77 foot PT. Question is propulsion. With 3 props, 2 rotating in 1 direction and the 3rd counterrotating, did the 3rd prop run at a higher rpm to counter tailwalk? I know this was a known problem as in early Navy trials the Hickman Seasled had counter rotating props to negate torque walk. SeaWoodies@aol.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Felicific greetings To All From Franklyn My best wishes to all, not only for the Season, but for the infinite beyond. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From RCClem@aol.com Subject Re Problems w/Concrete Ships Thanks for the many replies to my query. My dad now says that he talked to some of the sailors in the engineering spaces. They were very much afraid to leave port as a few of the anchor bolts holding the engines (probably steam, not turbines) and boilers to the hull kept pulling out with chunks of concrete and grout. No mention of leaks. No easy way to repair it effectively or permanently. Can you imagine this equipment flopping around during a storm? Roger Clemens ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Stephen Varhegyi" Subject Advice re HMAS Perth DDG 38 I'm currently working on the 1/700 Skywave Charles F Adams (Australian Perth Class Variant). Or as the instructions say, "HMAS Parth". Probably something to do with the chinese pronunciation of Perth one would imagine. I've been studying some photographs to identify any modifications that need to be done. These are fairly recent pictures, taken a few months before Perth was sunk off Albany WA as a dive wreck. Unfortunately these were taken whilst in port and as such there are only shots taken from the Starboard side. A couple of shots clearly show that the overhanging boat deck extends past the aft funnel, with a crane and zodiac raft on it. In some older pictures taken from the port side it shows a motor launch with sponsons in the same position on the port side. It also appears that the Ikara missile launchers have been removed in the later shots. I remember reading somewhere that these ships were latterly fitted with Harpoon. Also on the skywave kit the upper deck, aft of the rear gun emplacement has tapered wings protruding out over the lower deck. Are these right for the Perth version? The kit instructions are like a Chinese cryptic crossword. I've scoured the internet and can't find what I need. Next step, check with the experts on SMML. Do any of you Aussie ship fanatics have good references for HMAS Perth? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Steve Varhegyi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Shane Subject Re Advice re HMAS Perth DDG 38 >> The kit instructions are like a Chinese cryptic crossword. I've scoured the internet and can't find what I need. Next step, check with the experts on SMML. Do any of you Aussie ship fanatics have good references for HMAS Perth? << Hi Steve, Funny you should ask that ;-) Check out the Australian Naval Historical Society's website, they should have some pics up there of the three RAN DDGs which should help you out. http//www.navyhistory.org.au/ But it all depends on what era you want to make Perth, as the Ikara was ditched in the mid to late 80s IIRC. All the best, Shane Committeman NHSA http//www.navyhistory.org.au/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "bert" Subject R.N. Cruisers Thanks Tim, never having served on anything but carriers, I have only superficial knowledge of the internal arrangements of ships armament etc, Fleet air arm meself, and these days can only recall vaguely the internal arrangement of aircraft I serviced. my reply to Ron was sent the morning his post appeared, and I assumed he was only interested in the appearance of the ship, which is what most modellers want. The delay in my post made it superfluous anyway! No hard feelings intended. Yours Aye (TaT) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "johnny.geldhof17" Subject Re U-Boat Crew Hello Thanks for the link. There's also something else interesting. See following link http//www.hp-models.com/DeutscheKriegsmarineFiguren172.htm http//www.hp-models.com/Figuren%20kkm%201%2072.htm On the second link you can find several small U-boats on 1/72 scale, such as Neger, Biber, Seehund, etc..; There are also shown 6 figures on 1/72 I've asked the U-boat crew, because I planned making the U-boat against the quay. If you make it like this, you need crew ashore also, like there are also crew made for airplanes etc... But thank you anyway for all your reactions. HAVE A NICE X-MAS. Johnny Geldhof www.royalnavy-sectionbelge.tk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From Steve Singlar Subject Re Concrete Ship As kids we occasionally vacationed at Cape May NJ. Off shore are the remains of the concrete ship SS Atlantus. According to the post card I have , she was "an experimental WWI ship that was decommissioned as a failure. In 1926 she was moved from the reserve fleet in Baltimore and towed to Cape May to become part of a Ferry slip. She was grounded in a storm and could not be salvaged." In the 50's a local insurance agent had an advertisement painted onto the starboard bow, facing the beach. Today very llittle remains visable of the Atlantus as the ocean is finally taking her apart - nearly 90 years after she was built. Happy Holidays everyone. Steve Pelham, NH ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From "jlm" Subject drawings wanted Dear sir, I am the webmaster of www.chinahobby.com.
