When I checked using Advanced Book Exchange (http//www.abe.com) I found 9 copies of Alden's book ranging in price from $60 to $300. Joel Labow P.S. I have this book and strongly recommend it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From EDWARD GRUNE Subject Ace Resin & and an alternative John wrote seeking the address of Ace Resin. I found their card yesterday while cleaning the workbench - you have good timing. For Ace Resin, contact John Nitka at mnitka@aol.com. They do not have a website or 800 phone listed. Their phone number is 520-886-8051 A great alternative is Smooth-On. See their website at http//www.smoothon.com/about.htm For the beginner they offer a starter package at $25.00 that IMO is a fantastic deal for someone wanting try resin casting. Their Silicone SuperSampler™ contains working samples of OOMOO™ 30 silicone mold rubber and Smooth-Cast™ 300 liquid plastic, Ease Release™ 815 release agent for silicone, SuperSeal™ , and the "How to Make Molds & Castings" booklet. IIRC, JAG uses Smooth-On products, and they are listed on their list of moldmakers. Both the OOMOO and Smooth-Cast are 11 mix materials. The OOMOO is an 4 bour-to-overnight hardening RTV. It picks up deatil well. The Smooth-cast 300 is a 3-to-5 minute pot-life resin, which hardens smooth, hard, and white. Check their website for a good section on hints and tips. Also check their distributor list. There is one not too far away in Dallas that I can get to over an extended lunch hour. They have over-the-counter sales so I can get what I need - when I need it. Their counter help is a good resource for technical questions. I've already broached the question about them putting on a casting seminar at the spring IPMS North Central Texas show. Ed Grune Mansfield, TX I am not associated with Smooth-On, but I am a satisfied customer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject Ace Resin For those of you who want to explore castings. http//www.aceresin.com/ Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From John Snyder Subject Re Concrete Ships Hi Tom, >> There is a sunken Kaiser concrete ship that was beached after WW2 on the public beach at Aptos, CA. For a while it was used as a pier and fishing pier, and you can still walk out on part of the pier to it. The interesting thing to me at the time was, it wasn't just the hull that was concrete, there was a section of main deck superstructure that was reinforced concrete, also! Over time they break down by weather and waves, and it is dissappearing slowly into the beach. << Sorry, but she wasn't a Kaiser-built vessel. She was the SS PALO ALTO, and she was built during WW1, long before Henry Kaiser got into the shipbuilding business. She's been there since the 1930s. Cheers, John Snyder White Ensign Models ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Stephen Varhegyi" Subject U-Boat Weathering I was asking myself the same questions when I built the old 1192 Mk VIIc from Revell many years ago. I think you should get a copy of the movie "Das Boote" which has great action shots of U-boats in colour. Rust usually occurs where you have water continually running over areas which are exposed to the air and where there is likely to have been paint damage. Areas such as the water outlets, also dripping down from the bases of railings etc. I think subtlety is the key and it may pay to experiment with pastels so if it looks overdone you can just wash them off. Once you're happy you can seal the pastels with your final matt coat. Also rust is not uniform, so you would most likely find that some outlets have more definite rust streaks than others. The main thing is, don't over do it. Gunze Sangyo acrylic paints also have a great rust colour which looks very realistic. You can thin it right down for a much lighter effect and apply with either brush or airbrush. If you're using enamel paints you can remove the Gunze sangyo with a cotton tip slightly dampened with methylated spirits. With regard to weathering of the paint. Try using slightly lighter shades of your base colour very subtley airbrushed over the base colour to give a sort of patchy appearance. Once again don't over do it. I think the below water section of the hull would be less likely to have heavy rust, as it never really comes into contact with the air. However it certainly wouldn't be pristine. You may wish to experiment with very light patchy gray/green colours below the waterline to simulate paint wear and general slime build up. There are a few ideas anyway. Steve Varhegyi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "johnny.geldhof17" Subject Re Flag - U-boat 1/72 Hello, Hope you had all a very good X-mas. If you're interested in the flag for the U-boat 1/72, let me know, I've made it as it was, for my modell. I've copied it out of a book with all orignal drawings from flags from the Kriegsmarine. Regards, Johnny Geldhof www.royalnavy-sectionbelge.tk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Richard Rathgeber Subject Olympus Printer General question as anyone tried the new Olympus P. 400 dye sublimation printer? After reading the reviews of this new printer it sounds like a good competitor to the old Alps 1300 1000 or 5000 printers which are no longer being produced. If anyone has tried this or has any suggestions please respond. Thanks again and have a great new year.!
