I'm working on a USS Trathen, 1/350, in the late 50's. (Fletcher-class with a fairly common upgrade set.) I've been scratchbuilding more than my wont, but am stuck on a couple of things. Does anybody know of good sources for the following, or do I get to roll my own? -- Mark 25 radar for the forward Mark 37 director -- Mark 56 director for the aft 3" twin (I think that's the mark) -- Dishes for the two forward 3" radars Also, the plans I'm working from show SPS-6 and SPS-10 on the foremast. That seems to match my pictures, does anybody have any objection to that? I'm discovering again how much I like the main part of models and not the details, but since I'm working on this for a friend, I'm stuck with those… Thanks! Allan Plumb ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject Re Buying books on eBay You never know where you find a bargain for a book. Believe it or not, sometimes it is even on eBay. I always compare prices with abe and alibris, at least. The so-called rare books are often not so rare at all. Ulrich H. Rudofsky Delmar, NY, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From ALROSS2@aol.com Subject Re Ace Resin I do a lot of resin casting and have been buying my RTV and resin from Synair Corp (www.synair.com) in Chattanooga, TN for years. A gallon of RTV with catalyst runs about $100 while a two gallon set of MK1 or MK2 polyurethane resin runs about $65 (plus shipping). So far, it's about the best I've experienced. "...the usual disclaimer..."; just pleased with the product. Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "James Hathaway" Subject Re Buying Books on eBay Usually my first stop for used books is Half.com, they are linked to E-bay, and if one is readily available, they will usually have it at the best price. If Half.com does.nt have it, my second stop is Bookfinder.com who nearly always does, and you can take your pick of the price with both. Also, sometimes it pays to actually look in used bookstores, for two years I was trying to get my hands on a copy of "Electronic Greyhounds" (a history of the Spruance Class DD) and in that time I hav'nt seen any on line for under $65. Last friday, I found one on the shelf of my local for $15 and snapped it up on the spot. Jim Hathaway ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "George Stein" Subject Re Olympus Printer The model railroad decal group on Yahoo has discussions of the pros & cons of all sorts of printers. See http//groups.yahoo.com/group/rr-decal/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "GRAHAM WALKER" Subject QM2 Did anyone see Queen Mary 2 coming in to Southampton? She looked big and I Mean big. Butt ugly though "imo" I like to see 3 funnels, ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Don Macdonald" Subject Thank you on FFG Thank you all for the help on information, Now it is a wate and see game To see I hear any more from the party that was looking for the information, Another job well Done, Don That Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Mike Petersen" Subject Re Olympus Printer >> General question as anyone tried the new Olympus P. 400 dye sublimation printer? After reading the reviews of this new printer it sounds like a good competitor to the old Alps 1300 1000 or 5000 printers which are no longer being produced. If anyone has tried this or has any suggestions please respond. << I heard it isn't a bad dye-sub printer. But if you are looking for decal printing, you don't use dye-sub. Even with Alps, you didn't print with dye-sub, just the regular ribbons. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject U.S.Navy enlisted sleeve insignias I have been asked why U.S. Navy enlisted personnel have their insignia (eagle, icon, and chevrons) on one sleeve or the other but not both. I do not know why, but I'm sure SMML can provide the answer. I so informed the questioner, and now ask SMML to please enlighten us. My first reaction is that one side may be for the "above-deck" people, and the other side may be for the "below-deck" people (Black Gang), but that is admittedly a shot in the dark. I also remember the eagle being referred to as the "crow". Also, I recall seeing either a red or a white stripe at the seam where the sleeve is sewn to the main body of the tunic (the white stripe may be blue on the white uniform, I'm stretching here). I do not recall if there was a designation for the right or the left shoulder. We are especially interested in the WW 1 era, perhaps the 5th or the 6th edition of the Bluejacket's Manual (which I do not have) will contain this information. But other editions may have it as well. We will be grateful if SMML can supply the answers.
