May the New Year bring you all that you wish. Lorna and Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Brooks Rowlett Subject Re Glorious's aircraft >> I assume the RAF aircraft which had been deployed ashore in Norway probably had a local scheme including white but can find no photographs << Friedman's _British Carrier Aviation_ has two photos of GLORIOUS taken only days before her loss, showing her camo scheme. I don't think the Hurricanes got any kind of white overpaint. Brooks A Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Leslie D. Foran" Subject Re Glorious's Aircraft For what it may be worth, on pages 26 and 27 of "Carrier War, Aviation Art of World War II" by Paul Stillwell (Michael Friedman Publishing Group, 2002) there is a painting by Kieth Woodcock entitled "Moment of Truth" which depicts Squadron Leader Bing Cross of 263 Squadron attempting to land his Hurricane, first of his squadron, aboard Glorious. His pilots all made successful landings, despite not having arresting gear, due to practice on land and the use of a 112 pound bag of sand in the rear of each plane to prevent nosing over. Although the planes were deployed at Bardufoss, north of the Arctic Circle, the plane shown in the dramatic painting (from a 5 o'clock angle on the Hurricane and dead astern of the carrier) is in a tan, brown, and green splinter camo pattern that looks to me like the one used on these planes in England. A short article with this painting explains that the base was evacuated to allow deployment of personnel elsewhere, and the planes were removed to prevent their capture by the Germans. Twelve Hurricanes and their pilots successfully landed on Glorious. No mention is made here of Gladiators. Unfortunately, two days later, on June 8, 1940, Glorious and escorting destroyers Acasta and Ardent, were attacked by German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. All three RN ships were sunk, and Commander Cross was the only Hurricane pilot to survive. Les Foran Landlocked in Nebraska ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From SeaWoodies@aol.com Subject Re Spanish monitor Puigcerda, 1874 >> The Maryland Silver Mining Company comes to mind. But I believe they carry ship plans for the U.S. ships and not Spanish. Http//www.marylandsilver.com << I would try www.spanamwar.com and also the ironclads group on yahoogroups. SeaWoodies@aol.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject Re 132 scale U-boats Attention Tim Perry Re "Accurate Armour" -- superb website! Thank you. John Kutina Seattle.WA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Fox, John" Subject tidal wave cruiser Hi all Some years ago I read a book about a US Navy armored cruiser that was hit by a tidal wave in, I believe, the Dominican Republic around the turn of the century (last one). I'm not sure, but I think it was the USS Memphis. Does anybody know the name of this ship and if there is a kit available? Thanks for your help. John Fox ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Brooks Rowlett Subject Re GLORIOUS aircraft at time of loss Got this from John Roberts Begin forwarded message >> Cannot help with colour schemes but the Walrus aircraft went out in Glorious and came back in Ark Royal. Perhaps this is a list of aircraft embarked for passage to Norway rather than those carried at time of loss. John R << Brooks A. Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From m.f.mclaughlin@att.net Subject Re Glorious's Aircraft at time of loss Hi John, To make room for the 18 RAF hurricanes embarked, I believe 825 Squadron was landed before sailing leaving 6 Swordfish (1 being unservicable June 8, 1940) of 823 Squadron and 10 Sea Gladiators of 802 Squadron. Some sources claim 7 Hurricanes and others 10 as being the number of Hurricanes that were onboard on June 8, 1940. Whatever the actuall number is, John Winton's book on Glorious states that they were all taken below along with her own aircraft by the time Scharnhorst and Gneiseneau caught her. Norman Friedman's book on British Carrier Aviation has three photo's of Glorious taken on June 7, 1940. The first photo shows one camouflaged Swordfish ahead of one camouflaged Hurricane near the aft lift. The next photo shows a number of Hurricanes lined up on both the port and starboard sides aft with one Hurricane on the centerline near or on the lift and another Hurricane flying over the bow with wheels down. The third photo shows a stern view of Hurricanes still lined up aft on both sides aft. (The only white I can see for sure on the Hurricanes is on their fin markings.) If you look on the web under Fairey Swordfish in Profile by Bob Pearson, you will find a listing of 1940 FAA colours you need for your Swordfish. Incedently, two of the Friedman June 7, 1940 dated photo's show port and starboard sides of Glorious camouflaged with her island on both sides being a solid dark grey colour and the type 72 beacon being in light grey. Hope that helps, Miles ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Gary Subject Re Glorious's aircraft May I suggest trying IPMS-UK's Fleet Air Arm SIG for FAA camo and markings, if it's not on the site these are the people who know how to find it. HTH http//www.faasig.netfirms.com/ Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "johnny.geldhof17" Subject Re Revell 1/72 U-boat Can someone help me with the following ? I'd like to make it as a static with open torpedo hadges. Can anyone tell me or send me a picture on which you can see how deep the torpedo is in the hadge? I have a lot of documentation, but cannot find this in my books. I need to know this, so I know how to make my torpedoes. Also for those who are interested in conningtower on 1/35, please take a look at the following site http//www.modellmanufaktur.com/ You can find something very interesting under 'Fahrzugmodelle --> Marine 1/35' They also have a lot of figures, which are also very interesting. Thanks for you help. Johnny Geldhof www.royalnavy-sectionbelge.tk ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From agboak@btinternet.com Subject Glorious a/c The RAF fighters were in standard RAF camouflage of the period - there was no extra white added, or specific markings carried. Photos exist of the Hurricanes being loaded, and of the Gladiators on the lake. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "Harold Stockton" Subject 1/72 scale German MFP "Artillerieträger" For those who love to model in 1/72 scale, and especially Kriegsmarine subjects, there is a soon to be released kit of a German MFP "Artillerieträger" (Flak-lighter); TAN-72-0037-SWW, from Micro Realistixx http//www.micro-realistixx.com/ , in Germany. This company "produces 1/72 scale multimedia kits and accessories of a very interesting nature, the kits speaks for themself." The listing for this announcement can be found at http//www.tracks-n-troops.com/micro_realistixx.htm . When I contacted the company about when this kit and their also announced this kit and their German "Flak-Kampffähre" (Flak-raft); TAN-72-0035-SWW, they said that they had been busy with other projects namely This should give a nice addition to the S-boats and U-boats out there, and a possible match for all those Corvettes and Vospers out there.
