Sovremenny torpedo tubes I have just started building the Trumpeter 200th Sovremmenny, and was intrigued to know how the torpedo tubes are trained when a torpedo is launched. There doesn't seem to be much room around them! I have seen several pics, but all with the tubes fore-and-aft. Thanks in advance! She was wrecked in San Domingo harbor (I think). << If it's the one I'm thinking of, here's a pic of the wreck http//www.navsource.org/archives/features/corwith/017.jpg ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From joe.sus@att.net Subject Re U-505 last call Tomorrow, Sunday Jan 4 the U-Boat will be on display for the last time until mid 2005, when it will reappear in an inside display hall. I was planning to go for some last minute photography, but it may be covered with snow by then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Daniel Taylor" Subject LCVP 50 cal MGs Hi All, Anecdotally, I've noticed that LCVPs in Europe during WWII tended not to have the .50 calibres installed in their gun tubs whereas those in the pacific tend to have them. Is this opinion correct? I have no definative reference on which to base my view, just many years of casual observance of stock TV and literature. Also, note that this is not an absolute statement You do see references that show LCVPs with .50s in the ETO and those without in the Pacific. It's just that a clear majority of photo and film sequences show them conforming to my opinion. The specific thing that got me writing was a tv documentary about deception for D-Day aired on Channel 4 in the UK the other day. There were some really nice shots of LCVPs loading troops for the invasion. They were taken from above and show the gun tubs blanked off with recognition stars. I checked it with the Squadron Signal book on US Landing Craft and the photographs in that only show the guns used in Pacific context. I look forward to your thoughts. Thanks Dan Taylor West Malling, UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "George Peat" Subject us warship covers Hi Guys & Gals, I have received this unusual request reference US Warship Covers. Can any one be of help on this one. I knowthat it is bit off beat for the group but who knows. George Peat >> From cecil stoner Subject us warship covers dear sir i have collected over the years a collection of us warship covers going back into the 20s and 30s. i am getting long into my years and would like to price these covers for my estate, do you know where i could get a book on prices? some of the covers show ships lost at pearl harbour etc. sincerely cecil stoner << ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Steve Singlar Subject Re U.S. Navy ship status >> Original Question ........ What is the definitive technical difference between "Decommissioned" and "Stricken From List" when describing inactive U.S. Navy ships? I suspect it may have something to do with permanency. Is "Decommissioned" a form of mothballing, and "Stricken" a form of unsalvageability such as sinking or scrapping etc. ? Correct clarification please, SMML? << Hi Franklyn, I Believe you have it essentiially correct. A decommissioned ship is out of service, laid up in care taker status. When she is striken from the list, she is then made available for disposition - scraping museums, etc. The navy museum's online service is a great source of US Navy information. http//www.history.navy.mil/index.html Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Steve Singlar Subject Thanks for the help Greetings, Thanks to everyone who replied regarding PT Boat colors. There certainly are a lot of knowledgeable folks out there. As a result of a recent hard drive failure, I lost all of my notes regarding painting for the Arizona (Dec. 7), Bismark and New Jersey (modern). Can anyone tell me the right colors to use for these ships? Second, are there any paints availabe that can be applied with an air brush "straight from the bottle" without thinning?
