Now other Type VIIC is announced for this year but perhaps next year will see a VIIC/42. Greetings, Michiel Woort The Netherlands ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From JOHNEME@aol.com Subject US Warship Covers His best bet would be to go through the Universal Ship Cancellation Society, a part of the American Philatelic Society that specializes in warship covers. Their contact information is Web www.uscs.org or Mail Steve Shay, Secretary USCS 747 Sherd Court Fremont, CA 94539-7419 USA John Emery ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Bill Michaels" Subject Re LCVP MGs >> Anecdotally, I've noticed that LCVPs in Europe during WWII tended not to have the .50 calibres installed in their gun tubs whereas those in the pacific tend to have them. Is this opinion correct? << Dan, The guns were usually .30 cal MGs, not .50 cal. The squadron book says the boats carried one or the other, but it is the only source I've seen with that statement. The US Naval Institute book "Allied Landing Craft of WW2" says the boats carried .30 cal MGs. All of the pictures in the Squadron book that show MGs on the LCVP look to be .30 cal guns. IMO. The reason I care is that I was looking to upgrade the guns on my Lindberg 1/32 LCVP, so I needed to know which guns to get. I bought a pair of 1/35 scale .30 cal guns, figuring the better detail of the guns would more than offset the fact that they were slightly undersize. (1/35 vs. 1/32 scale) I do concur with your observation about the guns in the ETO vs. PTO. Perhaps the reason was that the boats in Europe were really only used once, whereas the boats in the pacific were used over and over. Maybe the logistics of mounting the guns, maintaining them, training the crews, etc. wasn't considered necessary, esp. in an invasion where the alllies had such control of the air over the beaches. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Harold Stockton" Subject 1/72 scale Type VIIc U-boat decals For those interested in more choices for your new U-boat, one might take a look at ULAD Decal's (Ulrich Leverenz). Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Ken Goldman" Subject Re LCVP 50 cal MGs Having just finished writing a book about USS Charles Carroll, APA 28, I can say that she definitely carried machine guns in her landing craft 30 cal. in the LCVPs and 50 cal in the LCMs. It was common, however, to have a single gun in each. The ship participated in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Normandy, Southern France and Okinawa. Can any one be of help on this one. I knowthat it is bit off beat for the group but who knows. << George, I have seen many of these on e-bay and have purchased a few myself. The prices vary based on the ship and the event. Most run in the $3 to $10 USD range. There is likely a Postal Covers collectors web site but I don't have the address.
