The point is raised as one would naturally expect the island on [the] port side for navigating purposes...' Tennyson d'Eyncourt wrote this in March 1918, clearly in response to experience. It almost certainly predates any decision the USN made about the position of islands on its aircraft carriers (Langley was not authorised until summer 1919). In fact, most of the world's carriers of the immediate postwar years were designed with British technical assistance, though this is often forgotten or not understood. Now, Harold, perhaps we can speculate why athletes (and Nascar drivers, for that matter) race around their tracks in an anti-clockwise direction. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were a connection with flight-deck design here. Regards Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Matthew Prager" Subject Need some help I need some help, but to get it I must admit that I model subjects other than ships (gasp!). I take a break from ships now and then and model rockets and launch vehicles. I am hoping that someone on the list that models aircraft might be able to help me out, as I am looking for a Bullpup, Sidewinder and Sparrow missle in order to build several sounding rockets. Does anyone happen to have these in their junk-box? I'd rather not have to buy several kits in order to get them. 1/72, 1/144 or 1/48th scales are fine and I'm happy to pay for shipping, etc. Please contact me off-list. Thanks, Matt Prager ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Blue Water Navy Hi Roy, Yes, Blue Water folded back in December. John Sheridan stepped in, bough the assets, and has opened the Yankee Modelworks, with almost all of the BWN line available. He also will probably expand the offereings. Yankee Modelworks is athttp//www.yankeemodelworks.com/ Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From John Snyder Subject Re Hasegawa planned 1/700 Submarine Depot Ship Heianmar/Blue Water Navy 1. The Hasegawa kit is a misspelling on someone's part the ship in question is HEIAN MARU. 2. Blue Water Navy is no more. Mike Bishop has sold everything on to John Sheridan, who will be producing the line under the name Yankee Modelworks. Best, John Snyder The Token Yank White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com for secure online ordering. It's grimness is exceeded only by the Maquette MQ-4003. The very best Oscar in 1/350, so far, is the Zvezda 9007 K-141 "Kursk" or its sister, the "Oriol". Even at $9.50, the LW offering is way overpriced...don't waste your money. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Harold Stockton" Subject Niko 1/700 scale resin destroyers Niko models of Poland have come up with a new line of 1/700 scale resin waterline kits of WW-II Polish destoyers. The kits come packaged in a cardboard box to insure against shipping damage, with all the available parts in a zip-lock bag against possible loss. The instructions are clear and of the exploded view type. The first kit is of the 7002 - O.R.P. Grom wz.38, and the kit's parts list reads as follows WTKAZ ELEMENTÓW O.R.P.Grom wz.38 Kadlub--1szt Komin--1szt Lufy dzial--4+1szt Maszt--1szt Pomost masztu--szt1 Pomost pod dalmierz--2szt Pomost nadbudówki dziobowej I--1szt Pomost nadbudówki dziobowej II--1szt Pompst nadbudówki rufowej--1szt Pomost nawigacyjny--1szt Pomost pod dziala P.LOT.--2szt Nadbudówka dziobowa--1szt Dziala--4szt Lufy dzial--4szt Motorówka---1szt Lodzie d.--3szt Lódz m.-1szt Wyrzutnia torped--2szt Tyl wyrzutni torped--2szt Kotwica--2szt Okapy nadbudówek--2szt Zurawiki lodziowe--4szt Kola ratunkowe--10szt Dziala P.LOT.--2szt Lufy dzial P.LOT.--2szt Pontony--4szt Pomost lodziowy--1szt Wywietrznik--1szt podajnik pocisków--2szt KM P.LOT--4szt Reflektory--2szt The smaller pieces are cast separately, with very fine raised detail, or on larger sheets that will require their being separated from thin flashing. And photographs of the different stages of building and finished models show very good and fine detail, including the mine rails on the decks and the inside of the lifeboats. Others in this line are the O.R.P. BLYSKAWICA wz.38, O.R.P. Grom wz.40, O.R.P. BLYSKAWICA wz.44, and the O.R.P.BURZA wz.36 / O.R.P.WICHER wz.36. These kits can be seen at http//www.jadar.com.pl/ or at the company's website at http//www.nikomodel.pl, and they seem well worth the $22.51 that they are listed at. Contact information about the company or their products can be found at niko@nikomodel.pl. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re Islands on carriers To Harold Stockton Harold, I like your opinion that having the island on the right is consistent with land-based flight patterns. Most small airfields favor a counter-clockwise (when viewed from above), weather and terrain permitting. Navy and Marine pilots do indeed learn to fly at land-based fields, and this is where basic flying procedures are instilled, and those basic procedures can translate into reactions. Having the islands on the right surely keeps the whole flight scene easily accessible. Now, having said that, I still amaze at how naval aviation pilots constantly compensate for the carrier's heading and their own (assuming an angled flight deck), compensate for the carrier's speed and their own, etc. as they approach the flight deck. Now crank in a pitching and/or rolling deck, then consider doing it at night with minimum lighting !!!!! Hoo-Boy!!!! This from a person who has scraped the frame of his garage door (once, thankfully). Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Harold Stockton" Subject Fly Model 1/200 scale model (paper/card) of ORP Garland For those out there who can appreciate the work needed to do any model, much less one in paper-stock, you will really like this image of the Fly Model 1/200 scale model (paper/card, #G103) of ORP Garland in Western Approaches scheme at http//www.modele.kielce.com/gar3.jpg , and this for a mear $4.63. The same company does the ORP Gryf (#G115) for $4.22, and a Russian SOWRIEMIENNYJ (sic) (#G122) for $5.85. This same company also does a HMS Rodney, USS Portland, USS Jaccard (DE 355) and the IJN MATSU (two kits in one), All good value for the money. One can go to http//www.hobbyfactory.com for other paper models. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Sean Obrien Subject Re Pre Dreadnought battleships Are there any good books on early battleships, say 1880-1905? I really like the pre-dreadnoughts and want to learn more about them as well as model them. Great White Fleet, Tushima, English, French, German, etc. I've found several that cover English ships, I want to know about the other navies. Thanks, Sean O'Brien ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Bruno Gire" Subject Iwo Jima class hangar Hi all! "custommizing" the WaveLine 1-700 Iwo Jima helicopter carrier (LPH-2), I'm looking for - a plan, lay-out and pictures of her hangar deck - number, type and squadrons of helicopters carried by the time of the Apollo 13 recovery (April 1970) Could someone (former crew ?) help me on these topics ? Happy New Year to All of you ! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "Chuck Messer" Subject Re LW7003 'KURSK' Project 949A Russian Nuclear submarine >> Here is a new to me Russian company named "LW" with some very unusual subjects, with onlt one being their new LW7003 'KURSK' Project 949A Russian Nuclear submarine. The kit is 1/400 scale with three sprues and is listed at $9.95. << I built that model - just did the assembly. You'd be better off with getting the Zvezda 1350 kit instead. The LW model is VERY crude, with raised panel lines the size of concrete walls, soft and innacurate details, lousy parts fit. Kind of like an old Aurora submarine model, especially the old Nautilus. I'm keeping the LW kit to modify into a science fiction spacecraft. That's about all it's good for. If you want to stick with 1400, the Maquette kit doesn't suck anywhere near as badly as the LW does. I bought the Zvezda, although you'd need to install a double rudder underneath instead of the single rudder shown in the kit. Chuck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From "Harold Stockton" Subject BOX005 'Korieits' Imperial Russian gunboat Here is a 1/350 scale model of the BOX005 'Korieits' Imperial Russian gunboat (mast/screw) that has the distinction of firing the first gun shot of the Russian-Japanese War. The kit has 68 pieces and is listed at $69.95. Not exactly my cup of tea, but a kit of a little known and interesting era. The kit can be viewed at http//www.hobbyterra.com/product.asp?idProduct=480. And the photographs of the finished model so show it to be nicely detailed., even down to the lifeboats. Other models in the BOX line are the BOX001 'KASUGA' Japanese armoured cruiser. 1/350, $109.95 "Armoured cruiser 'Kasuga' was part of the United Fleet on April 11th, 1904 commanded by captain Kuma and immediately took part in active combat actions. This cruiser was very useful at the time of batter of Port Artur (Russian fortress), its 254mm gun was the most long-range gun of the Japan Fleet. During combat actions against Sakhalin island the 'Kasuga' was the flagship of admiral Kataoka. (sic)" BOX002 'Varyag' Legendary Russian cruiser 1/350, $119.95. A really beautiful built-up model. BOX003 Gochkis shipboard revolving gun calibre 47mm 1/35, $15.95. The kit is done as a small section of the deck esge mount and railing. BOX004 Gochkis shipboard revolving gun calibre 47mm 1/35, $15.95. This kit is done as a dismounted deck-fun on a wheeled artillery mount for shore operations. All in all, an interesting new company with some very interesting and beautifully made subjects. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From "Brett Morrow" Subject NEUSTRASHIMY COLOURS The deck colour that your refering to John, appears to be a dark grey colour, I was wondering the same question as this ship is my latest project. It is very much Russian Navy practice to freshly paint their ships that are going on any displays in the public gaze, this colour was apparently what they had at the time, so they`ve used it to spruce up the decks. As with all Russian subjects paint colours are not consistent, you`ll also notice the helo deck was painted in deck green in the later photos, when building Russian subjects it is important to be year specific, this is also very important for Pennant numbers. Incidently, the Neustrashimy is attached to the Baltic fleet and all four Russian fleets vary in colour, the closest colour to paint the hull & superstructure for the Baltic fleet is WEM colour ACS05(russian aircraft primer). Cheers, Brett Morrow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Calling Darshan Ward Hi Darshan, I must have lost your e-mail address the last time I formatted my hard disk drive. Please respond if you’re still on SMML as I’d love to catch up with you. How’s that Agincourt coming along? Have you repaired the unfortunate damage sustained in battle with the scenery board? Hope to hear from you soon... Michael D'Silva Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From Maurice Northcott Subject Re IJN Hosho Hello All, I too have the Seaway/Fujimi 1/700 Hosho. I would like to convert the model to late WW2 config if drawings and/or colour information are available of the vessel at about that time. Does anybody know the whereabouts of such drawings and/or info? TIA Best Regards, maurice ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From 520086475121-0001@t-online.de (F. Pletscher) Subject Neustrashimy Colours In 2003, the quarter deck, as well as the main deck, was painted a dull anthrazite black, but had a red-brown seam painted to the adjacent upperworks. The helideck was dark green, while the area arrond the SA-N-9 launching silos was light green (like grass). All other decks were in the usual red-brown color. Vertical surfaces were medium dark gray, about half-way between the US Navy's Haze Gray and the usual Baltic dark gray of the Russian Navy. BTW, in 1995, all deck areas were red-brown and the overall paint of vertical surfaces was light gray with a slightly blueish touch. Falk Pletscher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From "Axel Wolters [Rsb.Terlinden]" Subject Re Hasegawas 1700 Watewrline kit of "Heian Maru" Hello all, referring to Harold Stocktons announciation of Hasegawas 1700 scale Waterline kit of imperial japanese navy submarine depot ship "Heian Maru", I can tell you, that this kit was issued approx. 3 years ago, I have one on the shelf (and begun like many others...) since 2 years. Indeed, it isnt a new kit, its the older, but well detailed kit of the passenger ship/hospital ship (both kits were available) of the "HIKAWA MARU", only 2 small sprues with the guns were added. So anybody could build the Heian Maru from a Hikawa Maru kit, using guns from the spare box. I dont know whether the kit was unavailable for one year , but it is no new kit.
