He'll get better just to get back behind the computer again ... SMML may be a bit erratic over the next few days - more so than usual I mean ;-) Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From ELLshipmodeler@aol.com Subject Re Army FS 88 David, I believe your best bet is to contact the US Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis, Virginia. They are extremely helpful, an if they have any plans they are more than willing to supply them to model builders. There might be a repro fee. Try starting here http//www.eustis.army.mil/dptmsec/museum.htm Gene Larson Alexandria, VA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From MicroGee@aol.com Subject Re Army FS 88 Hi Dave, If I recall, the Army FS ships were small coastal freighters with a high forecastle and the superstructure somewhat aft. There was a low cargo deck amidships. Is this along the lines you're looking for information on? Karl Kalb Microglass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "George Peat" Subject Re Revell U-Boat Gentlemen/Ladies, I think that the correspondant who finds such glaring faults !! in the new revell kit for the 'U' boat should contact the manufacturer and inform them of the errors. Revell are a large international; company and to my mind would not release a model of any type without first having done their research and then gone ahead and produced the model inw hich thehad most accurate information. Thses ships as were and are all warships built by different builders, at different times and modifications can be expected from yard to yard or even the same yard from week, month to maoth as any faults are shown up these are corrected at the time of building or if the ship is in service then they are retro fitted/ altered, at the first opertunity. No series of warships is exactly alike even modern ships of the same class, Thank you George Peat BEM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Joel Labow Subject Sydney/Kormoran and CAPT Burnett's Reputation >> In short, I think Capt. Burnett has received a lot of the blame over what happened, but it is difficult to see what else he should have done, given the circumstances of the meeting. The key point is the early torpedo hit and the loss of command and control on the bridge, events which occured before any main gun opened fire, most likely within a minute of Kormoran's opening fire. As with General Custer at Little Big Horn, Burnett and his crew's reputations have been much maligned without the benefit of any personal rebuttal. << It has been said that surprise in war is what happens when a commander misinterprets something he has seen right along. We will never know what the exact tactical circumstances were but the incontrovertible fact remains that a fast heavily armed warship replete with armor, director fire control and a large, well-trained crew was sunk outright in perfect weather conditions by a slow, thin-skinned, unarmored converted merchant ship. The only way such an outcome could conceivably have come about was that Sydney was taken by surprise...and for that CAPT Burnett is soley and inescapably responsible. Joel Labow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Norman Samish" Subject Printer for decals? Now that the Alps printer is no longer available, what printer is recommended for making decals? Thanks, Norm Samish ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From David L Miller Subject Re Trumpeter Steve Wiper wrote >> .........That is why I am now designing kits for Trumpeter Models of China. I know what the market wants and that is what I am designing for them. They seem to be one of very few willing and able to take that chance. It is really cool. Most of us will start to get some of the more wanted subjects very soon, as I have finished two designs and am working on the third and acquiring info for the next three. << Hi Steve I would like you to do a good, detailed, large scale model of the Turbinia. I would probably buy two or three! Regards Dave Miller Macomb, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Phil Gollin" Subject Thanks to Steve Wiper May I first say a big thank-you to Steve for his work with Trumeter and their new 1/350th releases. Secondly, an even bigger thanks for the news that there are more models in the pipeline. I say all this despite not being someone who will buy every version of the Essex and Nimitz class carriers even though I think it the likeliest way of Trumpeter being successful and hence continuing to release new 1/350th scale kits - I will buy some, but should buy more. I'm sure everyone has their own favourites for the future (anyone for a Hood, Illustrious and numerous Royal Navy cruisers, Destroyers and Escorts ?), but seriously it is only subjects such as Forrestals, North Carolinas and South Dakotas that are going to keep Trumeter going. One thing I never understood was why the Tamiya Fletcher failed (relatively). It was a popular subject. more affordable, and easy to build. I PRESUME that it was that it didn't have the "sexiness" of an battleship or aircraft carrier for the younger market, the playability of an aircraft carrier for the younger market and wasn't bought in compensating large enough numbers by us "older" more "serious" folk - in other words it's our fault !!!!!!!!! So whilst I fully expect things such as Forrestal, North Carolina and South Dakota Classes (and even a Scharnhorst ?) IF things such as an Independence class carrier, or escort carrier, or even a Cleveland or Baltimore class cruiser come out, then go out and buy them to keep Trumpeter interested Yours (yearning for a Hood, etc…..) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From BRADFORD CHAUCER Subject Re Tamiyacon2003 In case anyone hasn't seen it here is a link to a ten page spread of photos of tamiyacon coverage.
