What I know so far pre-war build, twin-engined and screwed, triple expansion turbine << That would be the Kingfisher class, only 580 tons to keep within the London Naval Treaty limit, but 2 shaft turbine driven. Six built pre war, classed as Patrol Sloops, and three more completed late 1939. Later re-classified as Corvettes but mainly (only?) used to escort the east coast convoys. Fleetscale CA Class Destroyer I am trying to find other dealers here in the UK other than these two who do other 1/72 scale models, I may have a source for a Type 2 Hunt but will let you know later when things are finalised. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Mike Potter Subject Re Corvette type in Monsarrat's books I haven't read Three Corvettes but have information about its author's actual experiences in the WW2 RN. According to D. K. Brown, Nelson to Vanguard, pages 134-35, Nicholas Monsarrat commanded a River-class frigate and a Colony-class frigate. Both classes had VTE engines and two shafts. The ships of these classes were war-built, many or all of them by mercantile shipyards to mercantile standards. The Colony class comprised US-built copies of the River design. The 4-inch gun was unique to the River class. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject Re Enterprise's Foc'sle Rick Heinbaugh wrote, >> Two levels lower, about at the hangar deck level, the foc'sle has some openings for mooring lines to pass through. They, too, normally have covers installed, to keep the ocean out. << The foc.sle on a large carrier is one or two decks above the level of the hanger bay. I know because I spent a lot of time up there on the "Hawk" and it was also G.Q station and I had to close those heavy &%^&#$ ports. These are big ass covers with the hinge on the top of the port so they fold down. I am pretty sure the level on all the super carriers is the same and are the same level as the ports on the bow used for towing, etc. Mike Donegan Naval & Coast Guard Artist Http//www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From RDChesneau@aol.com Subject Re Steve Wiper's epitaph >> Here lies dear old Lester Moore, shot six times with a forty-four. No Les, no more". (American humor) << Not intending to start a thread here, but there is another nice epitaph on the gravestone of Spike Milligan, one of Britain's best-known comedians "I told them I was ill." Roger Hi Roger, Without wishing to spark nationalistic tendancies - he was also one of Australia's best known comedians. In fact he lived a short distance from us. Lorna ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From SteveWiper@aol.com Subject Re Steve Wiper's epitaph >> "Here lies dear old Lester Moore, shot six times with a forty-four. No Les, no more". << There is an Identical tombstone in the "Boot Hill" cemetery in Tombstone, Arizona, about one hours drive from me in Tucson. Every time I drive thru there, I have to stop there and at the "OK Corral". Its kind of like stopping at the Grand Canyon, and saying "Yep, big 'ol hole in the ground, OK, let's go". Steve Wiper ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Peter Chant" Subject Re Naming turrets Another query on this thread. Can anyone tell me the reason the aftermost turret, under the British naming system, is Y and not Z ?
