I tried to contact Rhino Models on several occasions during the last 3 months because I wanted to buy a Dreadnought kit but I never got a response to my queries. Is this firm still in business? Where can I contact them? Or is there someone out there willing to part with this kit? I am looking forward to your answers Have a good day Romain Seil ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Tom Ruprecht Subject USS Maine/Russian Flag Decals Leaving lurk mode... Can anyone either comment on or refer me to a review of the Iron Shipwrights 1/350 USS Maine? Silk purse/sow's ear 1/400 ex-Heller Potemkin is coming along, actually quite well- too bad I started it before anyone tried to talk me out of it ;-) I found (possibly through this list) but failed to bookmark a source for Russian flag decals and now cannot find them. The sheet had Imperial Russian flags and jacks in more than one scale (and a few Soviet ones, I think). Can anyone point me to a source? Rupe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Sean O'Brien" Subject Battleship Potemkin I have been seeing a russian modelkit of the Potemkin in 1/400 scale and was wondering if it were a reissue of the Heller kit. Does anybody know anything about this kit? Thanks, Sean O'Brien ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Tom Detweiler" Subject Otter OK you guys, I have a really good question What the heck is an "Otter"?? And no, it's not the furry river mammal. But it might be strictly colloquial. This one popped up at a Vietnam vets meeting, the user was gone before I could find him and all I know is it had something to do with the US Navy during Vietnam or maybe thereafter too; it was a watercraft, possible riverine, manned by USN sailors-- I think. I believe I heard sailors use this term when I was in the Tonkin Gulf, too. Auxiliary craft maybe? Anybody else heard that one and know what it is?? Thanks Tom D. in Grass Valley CA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject Types of corvette The River class were known in their early planning stages as "twin screw corvettes" - it wasn't until later that the name "frigate" was revived for them, and then also used in the RN for other classes, e.g. Captain class DEs on Lend-Lease. Rather inappropriately revived - in terms of fleet function, the closest WW2 analogue to a sailing frigate is a light cruiser. Sure, sailing frigates were used as escorts for convoys on long ocean passages (e.g. transatlantic), but mainly because there wasn't anything else with enough endurance and seaworthiness, and admirals were always bemoaning the scarcity of "eyes of the fleet". Nowadays, the ships denominated "frigates" work much more like the sailing frigates than WW2 ones! John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "David Griffith" Subject Re Potemkin/Panteleimon Hi there, Imperial Russian Navy experts, Can anyone help me? I have found a number of photos of Potemkin/Panteleimon. Most of them appear to show her carrying torpedo net booms, but one or two without, and in these she is wearing the black/white/buff scheme and so, presumably, at the beginning of her career. Does anyone have any definite information as to whether she carried torpedo net booms at the time of the mutiny? I suppose one could take the easy option and paint her grey with the booms on, but I can't imagine many people wanting to portray her at any other period than the few days of the mutiny. I, for one, want to put a red flag on her! Regards, David Griffith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Chris Hughes" Subject 1960's RN warships Hi all, Having achieved partial success with an email to John & Caroline Snyder, I've decided to cast my net a bit wider. I'm looking for plans or drawings of the following RN warships of the 1960s HMS Loch Killisport, HMS Trafalgar ("Battle Class"), HMS Glasserton ("Ton" Class), HMS Tilford (Seaward Defence Boat). My father-in-law served on these ships between 1958 - 1966 and I'd like to try to scratchbuild one, two - or maybe all of them! I'd prefer to look at building in 1/350, but would welcome any advice! John kindly referred me to the Jecobin plans for the "Ton" Class, but cannot help with the other three. I spotted that APS Models in Australia kits a 1/72 scale "Loch" Class, but I have to get any models across to Jersey (Channel Islands) as luggage! Sailing one over is not an option!
