Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Brooks Rowlett Subject Re PH BB Reconstruction >> Friedman's "US Batlleships An Illustrated Design History" does a good job of describing their reconstruction (and their original designs, of course). the drawings are useful, and the pics are pretty good considering the limitations of the originals and of the printing process when the book was originally published. << Actually - early printings of the book have BETTER photo reproduction than later printings. USNIP apparently tried to reduce the expense of printing but quality suffered as well. Brooks A. Rowlett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From AFisherJr@aol.com Subject USS Hazelwood IIRC, I was aboard HAZELWOOD when attending DESLANT Afloat Gunnery School in '57. She, like most ships of the time, were painted haze gray (5H) with a dark gray paint/sand slurry on the weather decks. Hope this helps ... Al ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "David L. Fisher" Subject WWII merchant color The first Liberty, the Patrick Henry was launched before Pearl Harbor with the hull black and the above deck structures some shade of gray. It appeared the same in her sea trials after 12/7 but all later photos show her as with all gray and so do all other Liberty photos I have seen. I have never seen a photo of a US cargo vessel in camoflage. Dave Fisher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject A shipmodeller visiting New York So obvious visit USS Intrepid Sea/Air/Space Museum - also good for things with wings. Flight deck and Hangar deck are open, gallery deck is not, partial access to the island including pri-fly; nothing open to general public below hangar deck. Almost directly across Manhattan from United Nations. http//www.intrepidmuseum.org/ Consider also South Street Seaport museum. There is a nautical pieces shop there with a limited but good selection of books, and of models at 1/1200. John Reid The Aussie in Rome (who also goes across the pond occasionally) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "rtorgeson" Subject Re USS Hazelwood DD531 refs please Art, Try and find a copy (inter library loan?) of the book Fletcher Class Destroyers by Alan Raven, publisher was Naval institute Press. It has photos (1 each) of Jenkins and Hazelwood and two large drawings of Jenkins, one profile and the other is a deck view. Lots of detail in both drawings. Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Rod Dauteuil" Subject New releases from Revell Germany Hello all, I don't know if this was covered previously but I figure I'll mention it just in case. Revell Germany has a bunch of planned releases I just saw in their 2004 catalog. There's a Queen Mary II in 1/570 (they don't sit around, do they?), which is a new release. It's a good companion to the old Queen Mary, and in fact they're on the same page. Then they are re-releasing the USS Montrose Attack Transport, and the Glasgow, a civilian tanker verison of the T2 "Mission" series. Then there's the usual stuff, Titanics, PT boats, E boats, etc. Glad to see the Attack Transport being released, and a civilian tanker. Rod ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Harold Stockton" Subject New naval books and magazines A quick note about some possible new naval books and magazines of interest.
