Friedman's "US Battleships An Illustrated Design History" is about 20 years old. OK, not all that much has happened since publication in that class of ship - but the companion volumes on Carriers (stops at early Nimitzes), Cruisers (CLGs), and Destroyers (Spruance) could benefit from a second edition because there is new material, even apart from newer document declassifications which could amplify the design histories of postwar ships. I know it would be very hard to improve on these classic volumes, but does anybody know of any plans for second editions, or perhaps a separate supplement which might be cheaper for USNIP to produce? John Reid Who admires Friedman's writing style as well as content ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Nuno Rubim" Subject 3 Inch Gun drawings Where can I find scale drawings of the 3"/50 twin guns, both with and without turret, as those used by Dealey Class Escorts ( DE )? Thanks Nuno Rubim ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Doug Bauer" Subject Welin gravity davits Does anyone out there know where I can get a rigging diagram for the Welin gravity davits the US Navy used in the 50s and 60s....specifically, on the 1156-class LSTs. Doug Bauer Poway, CA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From MicroGee@aol.com Subject Re 110' SC plans >> If I could be so bold as to ask for some help, I would like to get a set of plans that were drawn by Al Ross of Bangor Main in 1980 for the 110 ft. Submarine Chaser of 1943-44. If anyone could let me know where they are available or if they have a set that they no longer want, please let me know through the SMML news letter. << Hi Jim, The best way to obtain the drawings you want, would be to Ask Al Ross himself, (alross2@aol.com) or order the set from The Floating Drydock. Incidentally, there is a fiberglass hull available in 132 scale from Microglass. (www.microglass.net) if you intend to build a R/C version. Hope this helps. Karl Kalb Microglass ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "bert" Subject "otter" I 'ave a water 'otter in my kitchen, some people call it a Kettle. Yours Aye in jest. Bert. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From David Wells Subject Re Pearl Harbor salvage book My quick scan through the SMML archives suggests that nobody has yet mentioned Dan Madsen's new book "Resurrection Salvaging the Battle Fleet at Pearl Harbor", now available from Naval Institute Press. I haven't read it, so I have no idea if it's any good or not, but it meets the criterion of being in print. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D. Beatty, May 31, 1916 | http//home.att.net/~WellsBrothers/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From wem Subject Re WWII merchant color Hi Dave, >> The first Liberty, the Patrick Henry was launched before Pearl Harbor with the hull black and the above deck structures some shade of gray. It appeared the same in her sea trials after 12/7 but all later photos show her as with all gray and so do all other Liberty photos I have seen. I have never seen a photo of a US cargo vessel in camouflage. << Of course you have! That gray paint WAS camouflage. In the case of a lot of US merchant ships, they were overall 5-O Ocean Gray, which was Measure 14 camouflage. I have also seen US Victory Ships assigned to the Pacific Theatre painted in overall 5-N Navy Blue, which was Measure 21 camouflage. Haze Gray with Blue decks or Gray Decks? << At the time of carrying DASH, she would have been in modern Haze Gray (Colourcoats M03) and modern Deck Gray (Colourcoats M04). Underwater hull would be modern USN Antifouling Red (Colourcoats M06). Best, John Snyder The Token Yank White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com for secure online ordering. It looks so tempting, with all those pesky angles and curves already figured out....it appears that it would be easy to transfer all that stuff to plastic and fashion everything one needs to produce a good model. Any input will be greatly appreciated.
