The computer may tell you the site has been "disabled for your protection" (whatever that means) but then will tell you how to activate it. Be patient, there is a time lag before the site comes up on your screen. John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Harold Stockton" Subject French warship plans For those out there who wish to find French warship plans, you might want to try this website of the "Association of the Friends of the Museum of the Navy," at http//perso.wanadoo.fr/.marine/monographies.html . One should also visit this museums modeler's gallery for some excellent examples of the modeler's art. According to the website, these "MONOGRAPHS CONTAINING NOTE, PLAN, PHOTOGRAPH" (sic), appear very well documented. The available modern and earlier warship plans can be seen at this page. Listed below are the available modern subjects, scale, plans sheets, photographs, and price in Euros. The modern subjects are ARROMANCHES aircraft carrier (1954), 1/300, 1, 2, 20,60. ENTRECASTEAUX colonial sloop (1931), 1/200, 1, 2, 13,70. DUNKIRK (ARMOURED, battleship) (1942), 1/200, 1, 2, 13,70. GEORGE LEYGUES cruiser (1947), 1/100, 2, 4, 17,50. JEAN BART (ARMOURED, battleship) (1955), 1/300, 1, 2, 14,50. JEANNE Of ARC Helicopter carrier (1961), 1/200, 1, 2, 14,50. JEANNE Of ARC Cruiser-School (1949), 1/300, 1, 2, 13,70. LAFAYETTE frigate 1993, 1/100, 3, 30, 22,90. LANSQUENET destroyer (1949), 1/100, 1, 2, 14,50. HUNTER S/M 123 (1947), 1/50, 1, 1, 13,70. Le FOUGUEUX (The IMPETUOUS) destroyer (1940), 1/100, 1, 2, 14,50. The TERRIBLE destroyer (1946), 1/100, 3, 4, 19,10. RICHELIEU (ARMOURED, battleship) (1946), 1/100, 3, 4, 23,60. SURCOUF (Underwater, submarine) (1934), 1/100, 1, 2, 14,50. I think that this is a valuable source for those who build anything French to consider, especially for those like me who are going to build a French torpilleurs d'escadre of the Bourrasque class from the Niko Model's ORP Burza/Wicher wz.36. Though the Le FOUGUEUX was actually a torpilleurs d'escadre of the L'Adroit class, this monograph will be a helpful addition for the finer details of French destroyers of that period. And, it shall also allow me to expand my French destroyer fleet into this follow-on class. Other eras are also listed, including an offering for premade scale sails and ratlines as "Finally a fabric especially designed to make the veils (sails) of your models. The connections of the widths of the veil are materialized by an extra thickness of fabric and a double line of point of seam is woven in the mass according to the principle of the drawn wire for the scales 1/72 and 1/48. In 100 % cotton white-broken colour, seams color "pitch". Respectively 99 and 103 G/m2, in scales 1/33,1/20 and 1/10 are also available." And the giftshop offers over 500 different 1/1250 scale ships; though these are not cheap at 88 Euros for a scale Dunkirk, and the Normandy at 106 Euros; though the liners are painted. All items can be ordered from the giftshop at aamm@wanadoo.fr . Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Lars Scharff" Subject Card Models and Kidd Card models It's possible to use card models for scratch building plastic models. I used some JSC kits as templates. The main problem with the JSC kits is, that they have no longitudinal frames. Therefore the hull tends to form a banana. Also the guns, especially the barrels, and the boats are difficult. Does somebody know a method to scratch build boats in 1/700? An alternative are the boats produced by companies like Seals, WEM, WSW and Modelkrak. USS Kidd I converted the Revell Germany USS Spruance kid to USS Chandler. In Fine Scale Modeler July 1995 is an article describing the conversion of Ariis Spruance to Kidd. I have a copy, but not the original article. It's necessary to scratch build the structure for the forward and after SPG-51 directors and a totally new mainmast, to modify the foremast, to broaden the hangar (to the beam of the hull), to replace the Seahawk with a SH-2F Seasprite and the whale boat with an Zodiac. The radar outfit is also different. The deck houses and air intakes around the funnels are also different, but the exact shape are difficult to determine. Best regards Lars Scharff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Bill Weckel Subject 1/700 Men of War I recall seeing a site about a year or so ago that had 1/700 scale Napoleonic era ships of the line. I think they were white metal hulls and masts with brass PE sails. I lost the book mark and can't recall who was making them. Anyone familiar with these or others of a similarly small scale? I'd like to do a diorama of a battle line or possibly a diorama of war ships at anchor in port. Thanks, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Old movies I may have asked this before, if I have, please forgive me. Can anyone in SMML please give me some leads on three old movies (hopefully transferred to VCR) featuring WW 1 wooden 110 Ft. sub chasers? The films are "Midshipman Jack" "Submarine Patrol" "Thunder Afloat" Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Vess Irvine" Subject Re German ship models "SMS Victoria Louise or "Siegfried" A nice model in 1/250th scale of the SMS Victoria Louise can be found at the on-line hobby shop ..... http//moduni.com/ Just enter "louise" into their search box and click go. Also available there is a set of plans. ...../V ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "George Peat" Subject New Naval books just published I thought that some of the members would be interested in this book list available from Maritime Books UK >> FROM MARITIME BOOKS (WHOLESALE) LODGE HILL LISKEARD PL14 4EL UK TEL 01579 343663 FAX 01579 346747 THE LATEST NAVAL BOOKS JUST PUBLISHED AND NOW IN STOCK.......... Or is it indeed both (a man-made improvement of a natural phenomenon)? << It is both. It connects, if I remember correctly, Loch Linnhe,Loch Lochy and Loch Long. The other canal which crosses or crossed Scotland was the Forth and Clyde Canal. It was man-made. I'm not sure what the loading gauge was for the canal. >> Do these aquatic passageways make northern Scotland into two islands ? << I guess technically they do, in the same way that the north eastern US is an island created by the Erie Canal.
