I was told this was due to the lack of funds and it cost them $14,000 to run the last one. I know the amount of work that goes into these events so I don't doubt that price tag. This person also mentioned that the museum is trying to deal with a few other museums to take it over. Anyone else heard of this report? << Keith The contest will not be held in 2005. They are not planning anything with any other museum. In their discussions with the sponsoring club cancelling the event they "suggested" that "somebody" might want to investigate the possibility of a group thing between museums but left it up to somebody else to do this. To my knowledge there is nobody actually following up on this that has made anything public. The full letter from the Mariners Museum was published in the club's newsletter as below "Since 1980 The Mariners' Museum has proudly hosted six International Scale Ship Model Competitions. It has been an honor and a privilege to work with the model makers and organizations associated with this competition over the years. Due to the recent staffing and budget cuts, the Museum regrets we are unable to host the competition in 2005. The 2000 competition incurred direct costs of $29,000 and numerous hours of professional staff time. Although we value our relation with both the Nautical Research Guild and the Hampton Roads Ship Model Society we must now focus both our resources and efforts on reinstalling permanent exhibitions and opening the USS Monitor Center. We hope that you can appreciate the challenges the Museum faces. We are open to hosting another competition in the future but cannot commit resources to do so in 2005. John Hightower, Pres. & CEO" Take care, Kurt Van Dahm Westmont, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Katz, Gene S" Subject Re SS United States I concur in not wanting to see her in the present state. I was a Deck Cadet and spent time aboard her while she was at the US Lines westside piers. I trod her decks and was in every public space, bridge, "wardroom", etc. What a beauty! I wished that one day I would be on her bridge, at sea, etc. Most of her officers were USNR members, and she flew the USNR Pennant also. I don't have it in me to go across the river to see her as she currently looks; hard enough to look at her from the bridge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Ron Subject Re MosquitoCon versus NorthernVirginiaCon (?) >> Just a quick question of anyone who has attended these shows. I can only make one of them, and I'm equidistant from each. Is either one likely to have more floaty things over wingy things, or ground crawlers? Any SMMLies gonna be at the Virginia show on April 10th? ISW? << If by the NoVa show you mean Model Classic, lots of wingy things, usually a decent amount of armor, lots of cars and a good number of figures......not many ships. To my knowledge ship specific vendors usually don't show and I've been going for most of the past 9 years. I wish I could make it to Mosquitocon but other committments for the day take precedence. Ron Smith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From David L Miller Subject ULAD 1/72 U-Boot decals - camo Hello I received the 1/72 scale U-Boot decals several weeks ago and can not figure out the camoflage diagrams that accompanied the decals. The "color key" is not sufficently distinct to tell grey from light grey, or charcoal grey from dark grey. My reading of the key would indicate that one of the main camo colors for the hull and coning tower is "Yellow", and that does not seem correct. Does anyone have any suggestions or help with this? By the way, decals are of good quality. This person also mentioned that the museum is trying to deal with a few other museums to take it over. Anyone else heard of this report? << Yes, it's official. The President and CEO of the Mariners' Museum, John Hightower, called in Joe McCleary for a meeting. Joe is a retired Navy Captain and is the Nautical Research Guild's representative to the Mariners'. The Museum said that due to budget cuts and lack of funding they would be unable to host the 2005 competition. They said the 2000 competition cost them $29,000 in direct costs and staff time. They said they'd be open to hosting the competiton in 2010 should the situation improve. The NRG is looking for another museum to host the event and has several possibilities in mind. This information was printed in the current Nautical Research Journal's accompanying Secretary's News Letter. The Secretary happens to be no less a person than Don Preul, and anyone wishing further information should feel free to contact him. I want to begin work on the Revell 4-stacker, and the Tamiya "O" class British destroyer. Could anyone speak to the needs, weaknessess, of these kits, and what it may take to build good, reasonably accurate models from these kits. Any sources, web sites would be appreciated. Thanks. Sad fact of life, I'm afraid we're a minority. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Wells with our bloody ships today" | Adm. D. I am looking for a 1/700 Nelson/Rodney or KGV class. My budget procludes buying new, but I have a nice big stash of unbuilts I would be happy to trade. If you're interested, let me know and I'll give you a list of what's available, and we'll work out a fair trade. A started model is fine, as long as it's not a wreck.
