S.E.Brurok ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject Re "Deutsche marineinfanterie" The Kriegsmarine had their "marines" (Marineinfantrie),e.g., during the invasion of the Peninsula of Hela. The German Navy also manned some of the costal guns. But it was not a separate branch of the military service like the US Marines. I don't think they were a separate entity with their own chain of command and general staff. Ulrich H. Rudofsky Delmar, NY, USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From EDWARD GRUNE Subject Re Fletcher-class Torpedo Cranes Art Nicholson wrote >> Can anyone direct me to some detailed drawings of the two torpedo cranes on a mid-war, square-bridge Fletcher class destroyer? They seem to be different. I don't have the Anatomy of the Ship book on The Sullivans, but I do have the FDD plans of the Johnston. << Hi Art The FD Plan Book is inconsistent in regards to the subject. There are several photos of cranes which show whats is essentially an eye-beam on a post. Add some braces on the back and a chainfall to hoist the torpedo. The chainfall rolls along the beam for in and out positioning. The FD drawings of the torpedo crane show a eye-beam or channel that appears to be wrapped around the post -- with the crane and hoisting gear fixed on the end. >> Also, is there any rhyme or reason to the placement of vertical ladders on the 5" gunhouses on the Fletchers? Should each gunhouse have at least one somewhere? << Again, inconsistency rules. FD Plan Book photos show ladders on the left side of the 51 and 52 mounts, forward of the hatch. Other FD photos show ladders on left of the recoil extenion on the back side of the gunhouse. Yet other photos show them on the right side of the recoil extension -- go figure. The FD plans for gunhouses do not show the ladders. Plans in the AOTS The Sullivans shows the ladder to the left of the recoil extension on the Mk 30-style (lower) gunhouse. The drawings do not show a ladder on the Mk 18-style (upper) gunhouse. My recommendation -- do what you want to do and dare someone to tell you you are wrong! If you want, I can scan the plans and photos from the FD Plan Book and the AOTS and send them to you. Ed Grune Mansfield, TX ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Burl Burlingame Subject Disposition of USS Hoga Advance word out of NAVSEA indicates that the tugboat USS Hoga, a Dec. 7 survivor, has been awarded to the President Clinton Library in Little Rock, Arkansas, rather than the Pearl Harbor group in Hawaii. It still must be approved by Congress, however. Burl Burlingame ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Tom Ruprecht Subject U-9 Kit Either on this list or the WW I list I remember a resin kit of Weddigen's U-9, I think in 1/350.
