My guess is that, given the era, something "got lost in the translation". Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Steven P. Allen Subject Re SCB-125 All this talk of the Essex conversions prompts me to ask has anyone heard what the Trumpeter release date is to be? Which one are you doing anyway? Francis Macnaughton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From SteveWiper@aol.com Subject Re Mk 49 Director >> Does anyone know where I can find either drawings or good photographs for the Mk-49 gun dircetors as used on the USS Atlanta, CA-51. << Bob, I have not looked very hard, but I do know that www.floatingdrydock.com has two photos of a Mk. 49 director in the series of photos available on the USS North Carolina BB-55 during her early years (1942) in their photo catalog. Steve @ www.classicwarships.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From SeaWoodies@aol.com Subject Truthful Friday? I heard a blip on the radio this morning about a British ship called the Friday that was skippered by a captain named Friday and had it's keel laid on a Friday. This was to lay waste to the rumor that it was bad luck to embark on a Friday. Ostensibly the ship sailed on a Friday, never to be seen again. Any truth to this I wonder? SeaWoodies ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From M Brown Subject More on RN ship's interiors Mike, Per the Defence Standards, passageways, machinery areas etc. are to be painted “Silver Grey” to comply with BS4800 00A01. It has no BS381C equivalent but does have an Australian Standard equivalent > N12 Pastel Grey. The Munsell Ref is N8.5 in case anyone out there knows of a model colour which equates to that. Actually reminds me very much of the old AP507C colour. (We have a swatch of BS4800 colours at work) Floors are to be EPDM (?) sheet either Stone 7220-99-891-6613 or Brown 7220-99-551-0829 . The number reference is an “NSN” which I assume is Nato Standard Number. There is a photo of Invincible’s control room on the RN website. It has what I would call beige floors which I assume is Stone. Have fun. Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Jerry Slagle" Subject Re Essex-class elevator question >> Intrepid, Tico and Hancock (CVA-19) had this elevator set farther aft. They were the initial SCB-27C conversions and briefly operated as -27C carriers with open bows and straight decks. They received the angled-deck SCB-125 conversion in a separate yard period years later. The other -27C/-125 ships (Lexington, Bon Homme Richard, Shangri La) received both modernizations during the same yard period, and by that point the Navy had decided to put the elevator in the same spot as on the -27A/-125 ships (the -27A conversion didn't include a starboard elevator). Oriskany, remember, was a separate case because she was completed as the prototype -27A but was upgraded to "-27C" standard (steam catapults, etc.) during her SCB-125A modernization. I don't know the reason why the initial -27C conversions had the elevator situated so far aft, or why it was moved forward on all the other ships. Could be a mechanical thing, an architectural thing or a structural thing, or a matter of practicality. I dunno. I thought it was weird the first time I saw it, as I was used to the elevator being farther forward, but when I found out about the separate yard periods, it made sense. Caution is warranted to anyone building any modernized Essex -- there's no such thing as ONE standard "modernized" version. There are differences in deck configuration, equipment, catapults, armament, bow shape, elevator placement, etc., etc., -- and there's even sub-flights of flights of modernization. I'm getting a headache just thinking about it.... jodie (who's only wasted the last 17 years of her life studying the Essexes, anyway) << I served on the TICO and found the information interesting. Regarding the placement of the elevator. I also was aware of the placement of the crane being forward of the #3 elevator, while on other ESSEX class carriers, they were aft of the elevator. After reading the information from Jodie, I would have to assume it was because of the placement of the elevators. Jerry Slagle ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Richard Sweeney Subject Oahu Railway Question....Answer To the Smmlie who was asking about the Oahu Railway... THe Publishers web site is www.alco928.com Good luck. Rich Sweeney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Millen, Alan R." Subject 110' Sub Chasers Greetings, Listees! I just got finished going through the two part article that fellow SMMLie Franklyn Brown, now truly a Man of Renown, had published in the Nautical Research Journal. First off, let me say that this periodical is far and above any other magazine I’ve ever encountered, at least dealing with modeling. WOW! And Franklyn’s article was very well thought out. There is even a picture of his SC96 of 66 years in the making. Imagine that, a model that took longer to build than the original ship. I’ve never seen the pictures of the actual ships he included. They do raise some questions, though. Franklyn, in Part One, you mention that all of the vessels were identified in large white characters on the bow, and that’s all I’ve ever seen. Lo and behold, in Part Two, on pages 198 and 199, there are a couple of craft with black hull numbers! Was this builder’s discretion, theatre application, squadron practice? In the same photo, it appears that there are different shades of basic grey. Again, same question, builder’s discretion, theatre application, squadron practice? In looking at the hull numbers, it becomes quite apparent that you NEED TO KNOW what vessel you’re going to replicate, and have on hand photos of said vessel, as there are so many variations in font style, size, and location. I see block, cursive, thin, thick, narrow, wide, no punctuation, periods after the S and the C, a period after the C only, numbers next to the water line, numbers just below the deck, parallel to the waterline, parallel to the deck sheer, and splitting the difference. Again, I’m going to guess builder’s discretion, maybe even the individual painters And lastly, a great number of the craft have no deck gun. Never shipped, or removed? You mention that they were ineffective, as the U-boat rarely surfaced, so were they considered deadweight and superfluous, and removed to improve the sea handling qualities? After seeing the quality, I broke down and bough eight more back issues, for the four part article on Flower Class Corvettes, and the four part article on the USS Kearsarge. BEAUTIFUL!!! Franklyn, I may just have to give up modeling, and start buying them already build. The Lord knows I haven’t built anything in the last five years. Hey, maybe I’m subconsciously trying to emulate you!
