You have probably checked this, but according to their what's new page its USS Colorado (battleship) Landing Crafts set (LCT, LCV, Vehicles, Tanks Several LSDs Harbour parts (Pacific theater) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From John Snyder Subject Re Portholes? Hi Rusty, If you're referring to what I THINK you're referring to, I believe they're likely blowout plugs/vents from the missile handling rooms in the event of a booster ignition belowdecks (not a good thing!). A good discussion of it and art work and photos of the Donald Duck Navy of WWII is shown in the books "Sea Bag of Memories"and "PC Patrol Craft of WWII" seen at www.astralpublishing.com. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Re German Type VII U-Boat Reference Ed Brigdale wrote >> Right! We have the kit and a bit of input from the rivet counters, now what about the best refference source [book] on this class of U Boat. I am sure smml's have a view regarding them. << Hi Ed, One of the best references I know of would have to be AOTS The Type VII U-Boat by David Westwood. Amazon.com has it for $27.97 USD, and Amazon.co.uk has it for £17.50. I just received mine from the UK store today and it’s excellent! Another good reference might be Kriegsmarine U-Boats 1939-1945 Vol. 1, New Vanguard Series, Osprey Publications, $10.47 at Amazon.com. I plan to add this to my collection shortly, as I believe it includes colour schemes for the U-Boats that will make good painting references. Last but not least, the website http//uboat.net is another good resource. BTW, I have no interest in Amazon.com other than being a satisfied customer. Michael D'Silva Victoria, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Robert Bartolacci Subject Re Portholes? >> I'm building a 1/350 USS Long Beach and I noticed what appears to be some rather large porthole looking details on the bulkheads. Can anyone tell me exactly what these are? I find it hard to believe the US navy would put such large prtholes on a warship or any other vessel. << Rusty, The large porthole looking details on some bulkheads may very well be blow-out patches designed to vent any blast outboard. These would be over magazine spaces and are large circular haze grey painted panels several times the diameter of a porthole. I was stationed on the Barry DD-933 and the Julius A. Furer FFG-6 and believe both had them - the Furer for sure in the ASROC magazine which was located under the bridge (Wouldn't want any blast going upward -) ), Don't know if I have any photos that show them but will look HTH Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "George Peat" Subject Re Revell Type VII C' U; boat Source book Anatomy of the Ship Type VII C 'U' boat by David Westwood published by Conway ISBN0-85177-933-8 Price in UK £25.00 George Peat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From ALROSS2@aol.com Subject Re Plane arming boats Get a copy of "Boats of the US Navy" (available from The Floating Drydock - www.floatingdrydock.com ). There are general arrangement drawings in it for several of this type. Al Ross ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Arthur Herrick" Subject Re Plane rearming boats and plane personnel boats Attention Doug Wild On 30 March, 950 AM you posted the following question to SMML >> While reading the World War II War Diaries of the Ninth Naval District I regularly find reference to the building and delivery of 24' plane personnel boats and 33' plane rearming boats. Anyone have a line on these ? Picture ? - Drawing ?" << Doug, I have a copy of BOATS OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY - 1960, A spiral bound booklet published by The Floating Drydock http//floatingdrydock.com/ The INTRODUCTION states "A Navy boat is defined as an uncommisioned waterborne unit of the Fleet, not designated as a service craft, and capable of limited independent operation. It may be assigned to and carried on a ship as a ship's boat or assigned to a shore station or a Fleet operating unit." The book contain 196, plan and profile drawings of the listed boats, and gives their Purpose, Specifications and BuShips Plan Number and Stock Number. The information excerpts for the boats given below has been edited for briefness. The boats you seek information on are listed, as follows - 24ft Plane Personnel Boat Purpose To transport personnel between shore and seaplanes. MK 4 - gasoline - BuShips Plan No. S8203(4)-24-653109 - Stock No. *S1940-268-9992 ( Length Overall with wood fender 25" 1" ) MK 5 - diesel - BuShips Plan No. S8203(4)-24 1298843 - Stock No. *S1940-529-9260 ( Length Overall 24' 8 5/8" - with wood fender [ not given ] The outward appearance of both MKs being the same - an open cockpit boat. * - I assume "1940" is the boat's design date. - 33ft Plane Rearming Boat Purpose To rearm seaplanes. Engine gasoline - BuShips Plan No. 587253 - Stock No. SNSN S9-R-21652-5315 ( Length Overall with fender 33' 9" ) ( An open cockpit boat ) Note Also shown is a 35ft version of a Plane Rearming Boat. Art Herrick Westmoreland, New Hampshire USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From AAA Hobby Supply Subject Re Plane rearming boats and plane personnel boats The Personnel boats were often either whaleboats or LCVPs, I have seen photos of both being used to transfer personnel to/from the beach. I have seen an LCT/LCU being used to rearm a PBM in postwar use loading torpedos into the nacelle bomb bays, but nothing during the war. Most of the wartime rearming photos I've seen involve PBYs on the ramp with scaffolds ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "keith" Subject Icebreaker Tanker Hi SMMLies, Anyone out there know where to find plans of the tanker converted to an icebreaker tanker SS Manhattan? Thank you, Keith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "David Judy" Subject Re port holes Bruce, I was wondering the same......I asked Jon Warneke at ISW, he said they were blast panels.............. In Christ Dave Judy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Revell Type VII Best reference source in my opinion is The Type VII U Boat (Anatomy of the Ship series) By David Westwood. Outstanding line drawings of virtually every detail of every Type VII variant. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From Mark McKellar Subject Cascade Modelwerks 1/700 San Clemente Class Super Tanker Hi All, I am looking for a seemingly hard to find resin kit - a Cascade Modelwerks 1/700 San Clemente Class Super Tanker. I have one that I'm going to build straight up as a tanker and I'd like to have another to build as the hospital ship Mercy or Comfort (darn - I hate to paint white ships). Does anyone have an extra kicking around or can anyone steer me to a retailer who has one? Mark Boston - Play Ball! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From HAZEGRAYADM@aol.com Subject Re Essex elevator Re WW II Essex CVs' auxiliary elevator (On hanger deck) per Roberts' Anatomy of the ship / Intrepid, posted about a dozen volumes ago I just got my own answer in a copy of "Warship's Data #5 / USS Yorktown" on page 19 there is a photo of the hanger deck that I've seen before but never looked at! I thought the pic was looking aft but it's really looking forward from just behind the #3 elevator, which is in the up position. The two hydraulic poles (Not four as suggested in the Trumpeter kit) are up and the aux lift (With safety railings up) is in place. At the far end of the deck you can see the #1 lift is up with the poles showing also. So, if you have questions, just keep looking, right? Thanks Keith and all. Bert McDowell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From Steve Singlar Subject Blow out covers Rusty Asked about portholes on the Long Beach. Bruce replied they may have been Blow out panels. I served aboard the USS Garcia DE-1040 for 26 fun filled months. We had an ASROC magazine up forward, on the main deck, under the bridge. I recall two over sized porthole covers on the starboard side of the magazine, at the top of the space. We were told they were blow out covers in case of a magazine explosion. I notioced these same covers on the Brooke class DEG's stationed in Newport as well. Hope that helps.
