Captain Treadwell corrected me, and thanks to others who did so as well. It is applicable to the WW 2 versions only. I won't make that mistake again, but don't worry, I still have plenty of others in reserve. This is a good example of the positive value of a negative response. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Harold Stockton" Subject Marine Edition's French Destroyer book I have just ordered the Marine Edition's French Destroyer book "torpilleurs de 1500 t du type Bourrasque" by Marc Saibčne from http//www.fnac.com , but it can also be ordered from http//librairie.auchandirect.fr which has similar pricing to the previous company at 39.90 Euros (cough) and the shipping by FedEx from France will run you another 16.00 to 16.85 Euros (gag) for a crippling amount for a book on a destroyer class of only twelve ships. But, it is the only game in town if you want to do something really different. What made me step up to the plate on this one was the fact that I wanted to build some French destroyers from the excellent Niko Model's Burza/Wicher, and the very excellent book review of the Marine Edition's Hardi class destroyers on Steel Navy's website. These hardbound monographs are done on glossy paper and have very detailed plans, color sideviews and photographs in order to build a truly fine example of some lesser known combatants. I did not know that both the Germans and the Italians used these captured destroyers in combat, and their color schemes are unusual. As if the "torpilleurs de 1500 t du type Bourrasque" by this author was not enough, I am probably going to order his similar book on the "LES TORPILLEURS DE 1500 TONNES DU TYPE L'ADROIT" in order to model this follow on class of destroyers too, again from the Niko kits. I can tell you right now that if I had not been so impressed with Niko's model of the Burza, I would never have forked over almost 57.76 Euros ($70.68, . . .wow) for any book. But I think the books are truly impressive and the efforts will be rewarding in the finished project. From the shown photographs of the Hardi book on Steel Nay's website, almost every detail is shown of each of the class' individual member's details, colors, armament, pennant codes, and modifications. And, at least the photographs will not be pizelated as a certain well known American publisher is so guilty of late. I will be writing a very thorough review of this book and the associated model build for steelnavy.com when I get the book. Happy reading and modeling. Very much appreciated. Jon Bottomley Ashford Kent ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Sell4853@aol.com Subject CHATHAM DOCKYARD Today and tomorrow here in Kent (UK that is!) we are recalling the events 20 years ago when we said a sad farewell to the Royal Navy when they left the Chatham dockyard with the closure of the the Royal Navy base there. Several commemorative events taking place at what is now the Historical naval Dockyard where the ship HMS Cavalier (WW2 destroyer), HMS Gannet (Victorian sloop) and HMS Ocelot (post WW2 submarine) are open to public viewing. See the site on http//www.chdt.org.uk/ Never forget that it was at Chatham that HMS Victory was built those many years ago. So in this modern technological age let us for just one minute today remember what Chatham has given the Royal Navy, from the men who built and maintained the many ships that left that place, the crews of the ships that still survive today and think of those that gave their lives from that great naval base in the course of freedom. Norman SELLS Kent UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Marc Flake Subject French Predreadnoughts Hey, I was surfing the net last night and found the website of a Russian manufacturer who says they will make a set of French predreadnoughts in resin for about $30 to $40 each. The first kit will be the Jaureguiberry, followed within the year by Bouvet and Republique. I don't know about y'all, but I'm very excited about a set of French predreadnoughts. My only concern is that the manufacturer has chosen an odd scale -- 1/600 -- and will present them as full-hull models. I don't know how far along he is in the process, but perhaps we can steer him toward the waterline divine 1/700 scale before it's too late. The company is called Abrilful and can be accessed at www.abrilful.com Marc Flake ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Model club & SMMLcon Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From brownatfareham@surefish.co.uk Subject Small Warship SIG The website (www.smallwarshipgroup.org.uk) has now been updated.
