According to Mr. Leverenz, he would like to offer his new decals with extended painting guides (7 pages DIN A5 each set) and detailed colour explanation for each Boot, that are much better than part 1 (which I had commented on about the poor color discrepency by the half-tone grays of those instructions). The attched examples of these decal sheets are even better than the first. The price is still the same as part 1 at 10 EURO each set, and whatever the current exchange rate is, and these decals are an even better value for the money. These two new decal sheets can be ordered directly from Ulrich Leverenz by using either Paypal or at the address listed below. The first kit will be the Jaureguiberry, followed within the year by Bouvet and Republique. I don't know about y'all, but I'm very excited about a set of French predreadnoughts. << Thanks for the great info! I love French predreadnoughts, too. (My favorite would be the Massena, by the way.) >> My only concern is that the manufacturer has chosen an odd scale -- 1/600 -- and will present them as full-hull models. I don't know how far along he is in the process, but perhaps we can steer him toward the waterline divine 1/700 scale before it's too late. The company is called Abrilful and can be accessed at www.abrilful.com << I trid to visit the website at the address you provided, but I couldn't. Would you check the site address?? Thank you, Masashi Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. -- Soren Kierkegaard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Peter Nolan Subject Help on mid-50s active USN Destroyers I am ready to embark on a tutorial on model ship building for the very large and active Atlas Model Railroad N-Scale Forum (6000 or more members, about 4000 posts per day). I haven't posted much here for the past few years, and am certainly not an expert ship builder, but this Atlas Forum has expressed an interest on how to scratch build ship models, based on some that I have displayed on my railroad. My project will be a USN destroyer visiting a US East Coast harbor in the mid-50s. I originally chose a Bristol (Benson-Livermore) class, but now realize many or all of them had been scrapped by the mid-50s. So, I ask this forum what class destroyer would be visiting (or based in) an East Coast base? Gearing?? I'm hoping the Bristol class survived into the 50s, as it is smaller than the Fletcher/Summer/Gearing class. N-Scale, for those of you unfamiliar with model railroading, is 1160. Many detail parts in 1192 can be used, so this isn't a problem. But I'm a model railroader with a large harbor, so I just don't know what the USN kept after WWII, and what FRAMs it might have undergone in--say--1956. Thanks, Pete ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Darren Scannell Subject Anybody want to see the mothball ships? Hey everyone, I am going to be in San Francisco Thursday and Friday, August 12 and 13 this summer. I've been trying to find a boat I can rent for a reasonable price, but haven't had much luck!!! They all want many hundreds of dollars, so the only way I can do this is if there is a larger group of people who want to go with me. Bayview charters is the closest, and he does a regular run on the first and last Sunday of the month, but his weekday price is pretty high. I'm waiting for a quote, but suspect it will be pretty high. So, any takers? If I can get 5-6 more people, the price should be under $50 each. $30 would be more to my liking, but hey, I know it's hard to get time off work and all. So, if you'd like to spend a day with a few Navy model buff's, send me a note and maybe we can arrange an outing! (I know there are lot's of you in the Bay area, so come on, let's have a party! ) Darren Scannell In a nicely thawed northern place ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Allan and Crystal Plumb" Subject The Usual Travel Question, London Edition So the wife was just asked to go to London in 12 days for a week or so for a business meeting. If I can get my passport renewed in time, I may get to tag along. So, the usual question what should I not miss? My #1 goal is the Navy Board models at the National Maritime Museum. (Although I almost decided not to go when I discovered that they don't allow pictures. -) Other firm plans include the Imperial War Museum and HMS Belfast. Other shippish museums? Shops? I have several UK shops on my browse list, but haven't checked to see if they're close enough to where we'll be. (2km north of Parliament, looks like.) Victory/Warrior would be nice, but on this notice I wasn't aiming out of London. Where's WEM? I could at least get pictures of the cottage. -) Allan Plumb ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Peter Webster Subject Re French Pre-dreadnoughts I think the manufacturer is remarkably sane, mature, and wise in his choice of full hull in 1/600 scale - a true visionary ... etc...no need to corrupt him ;-) Peter Sydney, Oz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject Revell German Sub - Japanese version in 1984 In 1984, while in Tokyo, I bought an approximately 1/160 [N scale] German sub identical to the new Revell model except that it was designed uniquely. It could be made into a waterline model easily by removing the lower half. The separation was along the sub's waterline. This design feature was unusual and I have not seen any other plastic kits using the same simple yet most effective concept. I still have it but I did not keep the box so I don't know who manufactured it. I wonder if any of you are aware of this or know if it is still available in the US.
