Graham Boak wrote that "The structure of the Wellington, as the Wellesley before it, was based on Barnes Wallis's experience in the design of airships, particularly the successful R100. It would take a better structural engineer than I, (or at least a more thorough read of the references!) to describe how the geodetic structure differed from all other aircraft structures of the period - apart from being much more complicated and difficult to produce - but it bears no relation to anything seen on a ship." He also states that "I suspect that the structure of earlier aircraft - perhaps such pushers as the Vickers Gunbus, just to keep it in the family - bore a much closer resemblance to that of the cage masts, but this is just a matter of standard engineering practice of the time, not copying in any form." All of this is quite true in the same sense as the German aircraft company Pfalz and Fokker used wet and heated thin strips of wood veneer that were then glued together in diagonal fashion to make semi-monocoque fuselages that were extremely light for their time. I especially liked Mr. Boak's analogy to a wicker wastepaper basket. One could only imagine what the wind noise must have been when these ship's were at speed. The spotting tops on the RN ships of the Great War were especially known to vibrate and drone with any speed up. Happy modeling. Harold Stockton ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Re Queen Mary 2 Airfix or Revell kits Hi Bjorn, The Airfix 1600 QM2 will complement your Revell 1570 (1590) QM very well, as they’re both about the same scale. Yes, even though Revell lists the QM as 1570, it’s actually closer to 1590 – and that’s very close to 1600. The Revell QM kit measures 52.7cm (1019.5’ x 30.48cm / 590 = 52.67cm). So, as you can see, you’re better off getting the Airfix kit – if it’s good quality, of course. WEM will be providing PE 635 for the Airfix QM2 also. The main reason some modellers will choose the Revell QM2 in 1400 scale is simply for its size. Naturally, at 86.25 cm long, it’ll make a very impressive display. At 1600, she’ll only be 57.51 cm long. As for me, I’ll probably get both! Can anyone help me with the right colour for Mauretania’s decks. I am building the Airfix 1600 kit. The colour guide calls for Humbrol 71 Satin Oak. Is this right or does anyone have a better suggestion? I would prefer an acrylic match, either Tamiya or Gunze. TIA, Michael D'Silva Melbourne, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Chris Christenson" Subject Tom's photoetch In response to Allan Plumb's query on photoetch quality, I just finished making a couple of Tom's 1/48th Spandaus for a Fokker triplane I'm building (gotta satisfy a WW1 plane lust I have). I would agree the bends are a little soft but turned out real crisp and the guns are real beautys! This is the first of Tom's that I have used, but I think it compares favorably to any other that I have experience with. Add a couple of springs and shears and I think they would fire off a few rounds. Chris Christenson Ord Nebraska ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "bendinggrass" Subject Revell QM2 Scale Revell, please consider going to 1/350 scale!! for the QM2. It would be a great match with the Titanic, KGV, and so many others in that scale. And, for those grade "A" nerds such as myself, the Polar Lights original Star Trek movie Enterprise will also be in 1/350 scale. Yes, I know it is a complete flight of fancy, but my imagination, more than anything else, powers my enjoyment of this great hobby. Thanks for your kind tolerance. Randy Nugent ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Sanartjam@aol.com Subject References on Treasury Class Cutters Hi, I recently bought the ISW 1/350 Coast Guard cutter Campbell, and was wondering if anyone could direct me to some good references on the Campbell and others members of the Treasury class. I've looked at some pics of the ships of the class in issue 2002, No. 2 of Warship International, and the pics show a mystifying variety of armament differences. Would it be any help to get Scheina's book on U.S. Coast Guard cutters of WWII? It's expensive, but would it be worth it for modeling different sisters of the Treasury class? If it is worth it, I'd be interested in buying it or trading for it. Thanks! Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Linda Oidtmann" Subject DD780 the Stormes Hi, I'm building a model of DD780, the Stormes. I am now ready to start the rigging but can nowhere find a rigging plan. The vessel is a FRAM rebuilt Gearing so any plan pertaining to the class will do. Can anybody give me some advise? I'll be out in Washington,DC, next week. This is my wife's e-mail site. I am Ernst ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Walt Peterson" Subject Seeadler I want a model kit, either plastic or wood, of the German square-rigged sailing ship Seeadler, which fought in the First World War (not the aircraft or conventional ship with the same name). Do you know where I might obtain one? Many thanks for your help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "Randy O'Malley" Subject ENSIGN Books For Sale I have for sale one copy each of ENSIGN 1 through ENSIGN 6.
