The same design principles were applied to the construction of masts on shore - especially for early radio and even dirigible masts. There is still a cage mast radio mast to be seen on the Moscow city skyline. Robert A. Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Robert Mosher" Subject References on Treasury Class Cutters The nomenclature at first confused me as I had seen these referred to as Secretary class. Nevertheless, the Taney is identified as one of this class and it is preserved in a late service configuration (i.e. Vietnam era) at Baltimore's Maritime Museum in the Inner Harbor. There is a website link at http//hnsa.org/ships/taney.htm among others. Robert A. Mosher ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject Re Seeadler Try http//people.freenet.de/mamoma/seeadler.html http//www.geocities.com/quecomaiden/revell-vintage.html Ulrich H. Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Joel Labow Subject FRAM DD Rigging >> I'm building a model of DD780, the Stormes. I am now ready to start the rigging but can nowhere find a rigging plan. The vessel is a FRAM rebuilt Gearing so any plan pertaining to the class will do. Can anybody give me some advise? I'll be out in Washington,DC, next week. This is my wife's e-mail site. I am Ernst << Ernst, As I recall the Stormes was a FRAM I but both FRAM I and FRAM II DDs had minimal rigging...just 4-5 signal halliards on each side from the flag bags at the back of the pilot house to the signal yard on the tripod mast mounted on the forward stack plus a halliard to a small gaff on the centerline just above the signal yard for flying the national colors while underway. All the radios used whip antennae so there were none of the extensive wire antenna rigs seen in pre-WWII ships. In port ships would occasionally rig a line from the base of the jackstaff on the bow to the top of the mast and then down to the secondary mast on the after stack and then to the base of the flagstaff on the fantail...this was used to 'dress ship' with lights or signal flags but would be unrigged when the ship got underway. If you point your web browser to the Naval Historical center has lots of photos of ships similar to Stormes. IF you want plans try the Floating Drydock at . Hope this helps, Joel Labow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Erwin Van Deynze Subject Re Seeadler Billings Boats from Denmark had a Seeadler kit in their catalogue, don't know if they still do... Erwin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Revell 1400 Queen Mary 2 Randy Nugent wrote >> Revell, please consider going to 1/350 scale!! for the QM2. It would be a great match with the Titanic, KGV, and so many others in that scale. << Well Randy, Here’s my vote for a 1350 Queen Mary instead of 1400. But, we’d better not hold our breaths. As most are aware, Revell recently decided to change it to 1400 from 1570 or similar. This was because of the proposed Airfix 1600. Revell probably figured there’d be too much competition if they were both so close in size. This is the reason I’ll probably end up with the Airfix 1600 QM2 kit because it’ll match my other 1600 kits Mauretania; QM; Queen Elizabeth; QE2; Canberra; Hood; Bismarck; Ark Royal; Belfast; Nelson; King George V; etc. I know it’s not as big as 1350, but that’s an impressive list, and all in the same scale! Try doing THAT in 1350! It won’t be easy, and if it is possible, it will turn out to be rather expensive. Don’t misunderstand me, I love working with 1350 scale kits! They make modelling a real pleasure for me as they’re infinitely easier than 1700, which I just can’t work with. Unfortunately, the range of available 1350 ship kits is extremely limited as you’re probably well aware. Like you, I wish manufacturers would offer more of their kits in 1350. But then again, I’m dreaming too... Michael D'Silva Melbourne, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From aleck stockins Subject Italian CB midget submarine Some time ago Ron Crawford asked for a source for this italian midget sub. I came to Pit Road's website. The kit has a price, I can't tell for sure if they actually sell it. I hope this helps. http//www5b.biglobe.ne.jp/~pitroad/index.html Aleck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "George Peat" Subject Re References on Treasury Class Cutters Art, I have a copy of the book you are after gives good references for the class of cutter you are after. If you cannot get hold of a copy or decide that for a one off it is a bit expensive then let me know and I can scan the relevant items for you and let you have them ATB George Peat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From M Brown Subject Royal Navy Funnel Badges Does anyone know anything on the significance or colours of some RN funnel badges? Ships in the Persian Gulf such as the Tribal Class Frigates carried a Dhow badge on their funnels but what colours? There are many photos of ships with a funnel badge which seems to be the Red Hand of Ulster on it. Anyone know what this is for? The old Type 14 frigates were often to be seen carrying this badge. Michael Brown ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Bill Michaels" Subject Re References on Secretary class cutters Art, The Secretary class entered service in the late 1930s, and the last of the class were decommissioned in the 1980s. With about 50 years of service, the ships went through a lot of changes in appearance and armament. I'd recommend trying to get Scheina's book through your local library before buying it, to see if it has the info you are seeking. While your local library probably doesn't have a copy, there is a library somewhere that does. (I recently got a title from the Naval War College through my small town's library.) Sheina has two books-- one on USCG ships in WW2, and another on USCG vessels 1946 to 1990. Both will have info on the 327s. Hope this helps, Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "Daniel Taylor" Subject Landing Craft TM Dear All Have any of you come across a publication called "HMS DINOSAUR Training and Technical Instructions for Major Landing Craft."? It is mentioned in the ISO Publications 'Outlines' book on Landing Craft and would be very helpful in a particular line of research I am following. I shall be following up the same question at the National Maritime Museum today, but the quality of answer is usually so much better here.
