Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "George Peat" Subject Re 1/96 scale figures Bob, There are figures to the scale that you are after available from Ron Deans of Deans Marine Contact me off group as my mail to you gets bounced back George Peat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From SantMin@aol.com Subject Re 1/96 figures >> Does anyone know where you can find 1/96 scale figures for scale WWII warships. I have a heavy cruiser and 2 destroyers that could use them. << Many people use HO scale figures but they are 1/87 and are really too big. Put one next to a scale doorway to see what I mean. The German firm of Preiser once made sets of 1/96 scale German WW II Paratroopers. Over the years I have converted many of those to 1/96 scale US Sailors. Not sure if any of these are still available. Bob Santos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Ernst-Bernhard Kayser Subject 1/96 Scale Figures Bob, maybe you can find some figures in H0 scale (1/87) and rework/repaint them into navy personel. They would be 10% taller than true 1/96 figures. Either accept the peculiarity that your ships are manned by really tall guys or you could shorten them by cutting their feet off with a hobby knife. The German company Preiser produces a large selection including military personel. Some of their figures are unpainted (cheaper). Check model railway supplies. Bernhard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "\"Honest Bob\" LaBouy" Subject Re Revell Type VIIC U Boat I may have missed an earlier note from someone far more attuned to the "it's about here" news that myself. If that's the case, I apologize ahead of time for this seemingly stupid (redundant question). Has anyone seen what "after market" parts are coming or maybe already here, for the new Revell Type VIIC U Boat? I've started initial construction and I am very impressed. There are however several areas, including the very visible grated decking, that cry out for photo etching details. I also hope we'll see some resin parts, including possibly different guns and conning towers. Does anyone know of a retail source for the after market decals for this submarine as well? I know I saw some about 3-4 months ago and now would like to obtain a sheet to go with the model. Thanks, Bob ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Ned Barnett Subject Re 1/96 Figures Bob You might try some of the better HO-scale model railroad figures - at 1/87th, they're not far off in scale, and the small variance would be easy enough to adjust for by adding a shim under their feet. There's a huge variety to choose from - from some very basic figures to some highly detailed ones. I believe Priesler has some of the better ones (though this isn't my scale, so I'm not totally up on the best). Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Lars Scharff" Subject Re Yaeyama 1892 and Miyako 1899 In the forum of Steal Navy following very interesting links to Jim Baumanns' question were posted http//go.6to23.com/jiawuhun/jiawu7-3.htm lot of photos of Japanese ships of 1880s, 1890s etc. This is a Chinese site. Could someone read the name of the ships? I' m able to identify the class, but not the individual ship. http//wunderwaffe.narod.ru/Reference/Fleet/ (Profiles, Russian site) I recommend this sites, even I can't read them. But the drawings and photos are worth the effort to search them. Best regards Lars Scharff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From David Wells Subject Re Shinano kits "enrico villa wrote >> I'm interested in building a full-hull Shinano, and I was wondering if anybody could give me some feedback on the old Hasegawa 1-450 kit. << I don't know much about the Doyusha or Nichimo kits, but I can tell you that the Hasegawa kit is less than ideal. The masts are very heavy, and don't look too accurate. The 5" guns look all wrong to me. The mounts look rather rectangular, unlike those in any illustration of the Shinano I've ever seen. Maybe you could steal some better ones from a 1/450 Yamato. There's also the issue of the 4 large, obvious Phillips screws in the flight deck. Hasegawa did a much better job hiding them on their Akagi kit. The hull isn't too bad, (identical to the one Hasegawa used on their 1/450 Yamato) but the propellers are too big. Overall, I'd call this one "salvageable", but you're going to have to do some work. Now, if anyone out there has done the Doyusha kit or the Nichimo kit, I'd like to talk to you off-list about a review for Rajen's List. "There seems to be something wrong | David R. They are the WORST pieces of junk ever to be dumped on the modeling community. A Glencoe kit looks like a Tamiya in comparison. If you want to build a 1/72 fleet boat, belly up to the bar and get a hull from Lee Upshaw. That hull is excellent. So are the plans. Then check on the www.SubCommittee.com Swap forum for a photoetch set that was done a couple years ago for this hull. Some are still floating around out there - I know as I have one - and they are gorgeous. Deck, fittings, conning tower, limber holes, the whole shebang. And then plan to do some scratchbuilding of the other items for the sub. No other way around it right now. Kevin Wenker ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "bert" Subject shinano kits Hi! Enrico, I have never been able to obtain the 450 Hasegawa Shinano. I have however built Vanguard, Missouri, Yamato and Akagi. you have to be careful buying them unseen as I purchased the Tirpitz and it is the version that is motorised and quite frankly the the hull would require a lot of work to make it into a display model it is still in the box untouched! The four that I built are the display versions and in my opinion do capture the lines of the ships. As to scale accuracy I have never checked them out as it does not bother me too much if the manufacturer has failed to put a rivet in the right place! To me if it looks right thats it. Hope this is of use to you. Incidentally the display version of the Shinano kit would probably use the Yamato/Mushasi hull and that is reasonable. Yours Aye, Bert (TaT). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "Hub & Dianne Plott" Subject Re Shinano kits Enrico The 1/300 Nichimo Shinano is rarer than hen's teeth! I have been looking for a reasonably priced one for 20 years with no luck. There is also the old UPC 1/400 kit of the Shinano. So it is really down to it or the Hasegawa kit and both sell for big money when they come up on ebay! Both have their faults but are the only game in town if you want to avoid the 1/700 stuff. HTH Hub ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Fleet Subs in 172 >> Combat Models have a 1/72 scale FleetSub! It is a Gato vacform hull (in four parts, if I remember) with a lot of work to be done but workable! With no fittings, you would have to use HR Products or others (like Airfix Boffors and Oerlikons) or even scratchbuilding your own!<< I didn't mention these kits as they are extremely rudimentary (own a couple myself), and require very advanced modeling skills to build into a decent display. Vacuform tend not to have crisp demarcations, and need substantial (homebuilt) internal bracing. Frankly, the only thing going for them is size.
