I was very impressed at the finished product; however, I met the original owner of Combat Models (since deceased) at this show and he asked if I had ever done a vaccuform model and what were my scratchbuilding skills. I levelled with him and said no vacccuform and only fair-to-middlin', and he suggested that I pass on buying the kit. It was intended for the pretty experienced and outfitted builders. Honest answer from the source. But it WAS really impressive!!! Gene ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Leonard, Michael W" Subject Hecker & Goros Figures Kerry L. Jang asked - >> This weekend I picked up the new Revell U-Boat. It was an inpulsive purchase as I found it at quite a discount. Now that I have the thing, I guess I am committed to building it and I think it really needs a crew. << The CzechMaster figures are excellent. Squadron Mail Order carries the four sets currently available. >> Does anyone know where I can purchase the three sets of Hecker and Goros 1/72 U-Boat crew figures that I have seen reviewed on various sites (none say where to get 'em!). << The only North American vendor that I know of for H&G figures is The Red Lancers in Milton, PA. Contact Chuck Robinson for availability. Last week he was at a show in Maryland and had the 1/350 scale WW1 Austro-Hungarian U-boats that H&G produces (complete with Preiser figures). http//www.redlancers.com/subcatout.asp?mfg=249&page=1&hot=1 Mike Alexandria, VA USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From JRKutina@webtv.net (John Kutina) Subject DYE4Minis@aol.com - war gane figure supplier Re chat group modelers - the DYE4Minis is an excellent source of figures of many scales. I needed some 1/160 scale figures 10 mm [N] scale and found them here. They were excellent and realistically priced. The owner is very cooperative and prompt in his shipments. Regards, John Kutina ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Richa5011@aol.com Subject Re Tamiya Pre-Built >> Do you know how much they are asking for the pre-built Tamaiya battleships? << At TamiyaCon this past weekend they had them listed at $ 698.00 Frankly, the finish was a little "toy-like"... Nat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Bill Michaels Subject Re Revell America Jeff, From your post, I take it you have the 1980s re-release of the Revell America. This release of the kit came in the box with the big yellow stripe across the top of the box art. It included the standard vacuum formed plastic sails, and was not advertised as being designed to sail in water. As a lad, I had the 1969 edition of the kit, which was designed to sail in water. That model was my favorite-- it was a fast sailer, much faster than any of the other toys/models in my free-sailing fleet. That kit had nice flexible sails, and included the triangular keel for use in water. That little triangular piece of plastic had a huge impact on the model's sailing ability-- without it, the model made way too much leeway. (Even back then, I realized how screwed I'd be if I lost the keel, so I painted it a bright color so I'd have a better chance of finding it if I lost it.) Revell also released the America kit in the early 1970s as a Civil War Blockader. This was accurate-- the US Navy added a couple of guns to the ship, and used it part of the blockade fleet in the early war years. (I don't think that model was sold as a free-sailing model- I don't think it came with the good sails.) In case you can't tell, this kit is an old favorite of mine. (My boyhood kit is long gone.) I intend to build one as a small RC model some day. If you don't have any use for the sailing keel, I'd be happy to take it off your hands.... Jang" Subject Hecker & Goros 172 U Boat crews Hi All, Several of you helpful people contacted me off-list with some possible places to get these figure sets. Thanks! Unfortunately, none bore fruit. The main stockists checked was Hannants in the UK and Historex Agents. Hannants only carried the resin CMK brand figures. There are three sets. The first is officers but is listed as "sold out". The second shows the crew at rest (sitting on deck) and the third loading supplies. The other main lead was Historex Agents, but despite carrying all other Hecker and Goros figures, are not carrying the 172 U-Boat range according to the e0-mail I got back this morning. I contacted Hecker and Goros myself in English with no reply. I have a friend in Germany who contacted them in German and she got a reply straight away. The company says that the best way for me to get the figures was for her to buy them and send them to me. It appears that overseas sales are difficult for the company as payment options are limited and a hassle. So, for the time being, if you are desperate for a U Boat crew, you seem to need a friend in Germany willing to get them first and send them on. Cheers, Kerry Vancouver, BC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "lamkeel" Subject Steam Gun Boats of the RN Hi All I have had a request to complete the drawings I started back in 1994 to cover the RN's Steam Gun Boats, steel hulled miniture destroyers. To cover all the information that I have on the type is going to take ten (10) large sheets. I have a mass of original shipbuilders drawings for the class, so there is no problem there, but has anyone photographs that I could borrow of the layout for those remaining six units as modified for high speed minelaying from the period around "D" Day. Also the weapon layout. I have some poor reproductions of a few of the class laid up post war, but stripped of all armament, and I have a G/A of HMS Grey Goose as she was when converted to run on gas turbines. Thanks for any help. (More hours in the day would help too)! Yours "Aye" John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "John Rule" Subject 196 Figures Ned said, >> You might try some of the better HO-scale model railroad figures - at 1/87th, they're not far off in scale, and the small variance would be easy enough to adjust for by adding a shim under their feet. << I'm afraid not Ned. You'd need to cut their feet or heads off to bring them to scale. There is a company in England called Dean's Marine who have 196 scale figures and I think they may be sailors. John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Harold Winkel Subject German H 42 plans I´m searching for plans, sketches etc of the german H 42 project. Breyer´s plans are quite wishi-washi concerning the stern geometry, and (in some cases) his sources appear to be obsolent. Any information available? TIA, greetings from Vienna, Harold ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From aleck stockins Subject 1/72 photoetch set >> Unless you like putting bamboo shoots under your fingernails and then setting them on fire, I would recommend staying far, far away from a Combat model. They are the WORST pieces of junk ever to be dumped on the modeling community. A Glencoe kit looks like a Tamiya in comparison. If you want to build a 1/72 fleet boat, belly up to the bar and get a hull from Lee Upshaw. That hull is excellent. So are the plans. Then check on the www.SubCommittee.com Swap forum for a photoetch set that was done a couple years ago for this hull. Some are still floating around out there - I know as I have one - and they are gorgeous. Deck, fittings, conning tower, limber holes, the whole shebang. And then plan to do some scratchbuilding of the other items for the sub. No other way around it right now. << Hi Kevin Can you give us more details about this photoetch set (name, company, contents and for what specific sub class is this designed (Lee Upshaw has hulls for more than one US sub class)). I had not heard from it before and could not find any references on the web. Thanks in advance Aleck ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From Ives100@aol.com Subject Re Type VII Aftermarket parts As far as aftermarket parts (photoetch parts), there appears to be some action on the SubCommittee Bulletin Board around photoetch. See this thread http//www.subcommittee.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=07190b607e217982797bee8018ae84cf;act=ST;f=6;t=51;st=30 To quote the post in brief On the agenda so far-- Deck Conning Tower Floor Saddle Tank Access Plates Capstan tubing, heads and doubler plates Maybe a small placard saying "ALAARM!!" No definitive word on when these will be available. The March SubCommittee Report (The SubCommittee's glossy magazine) column which covers display submarine models had the following on the Type VII, including the decals and a picture of the decals Type VII-C Already there is talk of a photoetch aftermarket parts (possibly e.g., a photoetch deck) coming out of White Ensign Models in England. The photoetch kit will be released as #PE 7203. Check the website for further details at http//www.whiteensignmodels.com/. A set of resin crew figures is already available from Czechmaster (Czechmaster 1/72 U-Boat Crew - Set 1 #CMF72116), with two more sets on the way. These are also available from White Ensign Models. A more extensive set of aftermarket decals for this kit has also surfaced (see photo). These are available from a German outfit called U.L.A.D. (To order, please contact Leverenz-Berlin@t-online.de). White Ensign website has the following WEM 1/72 Type VIIC U-Boat(Reference #PE 7203) To fit the Revell kit, COMING SOON. Hope this all helps. Tom Dougherty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From "Stephen Cowardin" Subject 1/96 figures Prieser makes figures in what is called "architectural scale"; that is, 1/100 which should be close enough. I have purchased a box of inpainted 1/100 figures from Walther.com. That's right, the model train people. they might even have 1/96 figures as well, since they stock virtually all scales AND they are nice business people. Happy hunting! Steve Cowardin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From "David Griffith" Subject Pass the Prozac, somebody!! Hello there, I could cry!! Yesterday evening I was putting the final touches, in fact, apart from a coat of varnish to the sea, it THE FINAL TOUCH, to my Combrig 1/700 Potemkin, and looking forward to the IPMS Scottish Nationals this weekend, when disaster struck. Not sure quite what happened, I think the tweezers caught on the rigging and then my hand twitched and the whole ended upside down in my lap!!! It was horrible. Both topmasts and half of the mainmast gone, and a spider's web of the finest rigging I've ever managed to do turned into a failed game of cat's cradle. Carrying out a post-action damage report, it has to be said that the standing rigging for the foremast was largely intact and replacing the resin topmasts and yards with brass meant that they came away as complete units, but it was just about a total weekend's work putting all these nylon fibres on. Maybe I'm turning into an anally retentive obsessional, but I've got the wife's permission to work till midnight tonight and perhaps through the night tomorrow, and hopefully have it repaired again in time for Saturday. On second thoughts, never mind about the Prozac, I'll take a beta blocker to steady the hand and snort a couple of lines of cocaine to keep me going! -) What about the rest of you? What have been your worst disasters?
