It was the Ship named after the town. Here is the correct history. A sloop was laid down in the 30's and named Weston Super Mare. (There were 4 Classes all named after seaside resorts) others were Hastings, Fowey, et,al. 14 in all. The lower deck of the R.N. had already named the establishments run by Sister Agnes Weston, "Aggies". So when Weston-Super-Mare was named it immediately became to the lower deck wits "Aggie on Orseback" this of course led to many ribald remarks of the anglo saxon variety. And my Lords of the Admiralty in their infinite wisdom, Immediately had the Badge withdrawn and renamed the Ship.It was launched in 1932 as just Plain Weston!. No offence intended Allen "Yours Aye" (TaT). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "David Hathaway" Subject Re Thornycroft Second Class Torpedo Boats 1880-83 "The First Destroyers" by David Lyons would be another reference to look for covers the development of topedo boats through to the first true destroyers. Mine is out on loan so I can vouch whethere it is truly useful but it should be easy to find.
