Jang" Subject Vancouver Hobby Shops and other distractions... Hi Gordon, For ship related items, Burnaby Hobbies located in where else, Burnaby (a suburb of Vancouver) specializes in RC ships, has some wooden kits and some plastics. Their selection is limited, but often the unusual items are to be found there. Another shop is Finescale Models in North Vancouver, located in where else, North Vancouver, (another suburb of Vancouver) that has a good selection of plastics and wooden ship kits. You can get there from that tourist trap, Lonsdale Quay via Skytrain and the Seabus. Imperial Hobbies (on No 3 Road firectly across from the Safeway at Lansdowne Mall) in Richmond (yet anther suburb of Vancouver that looks like a gigantic strip mall) has a good selection of plastics and has all the latest Japanese kits, but are probably the most expensive place to buy kits. It close to the Airport. A cabbie could drop you off there after deplaning.... All three shops have excellent selections of planes and tanks and stuff. Within the fine city of Vancouver itself, no hobby shops are allowed... just Chinese restaurants and upscale sushi bars (travel tip eat only in places where the patronage is Chinese or Japanese), fusion cuisine bistros (try the new Japanese style tapas bars (at the foot of Robson St, near Denman St.) or Chinese French fusion restaurants (e.g., "Blue Ginger"); hand crafted beers (e.g., Yaletown district) and Starbucks (especially on Robson St. is great for "sightseeing", nudge, nudge, wink, wink) is all there is .... hell, who needs a hobby shop with all these distactions... ;-) A small selection of sushi and a latte in Vancouver's downtown is equivalent in cost to the new Tamiya Yamato.... but with the weak Canadian dollar against the Pound, you will do very well. Have good trip! Best, Kerry Jang ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From GGeGratz@aol.com Subject Re Looking for Mexican Gunboat images Small photo of Mexican Vicente Guerrero are in Jane's 1919. George Gratz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Ned Barnett Subject I got a promotion! I just got word from the History Channel that, for my work on the World War I Tech show (Modern Marvels, July 28) - which has gone a long way beyond being a talking head - that I'm going to be named "Historical Consultant" in the roll-credits, as well as being identified as an Historian while on camera. There's got to be some way I can translate this into further opportunities in military history (and I'd welcome any ideas), but this is like a minor-league dream come true for me. I've been writing about military history and military technology since 1972 (my first published article was then, in Air Classics magazine), but I never got this kind of recognition before. I invite you to share my celebration, and to offer me any ideas you might have on capitalizing on this. A PR person who does his own promotion strategizing might just have a fool for a client Thanks. Ned Barnett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From andrew jones Subject Misc Hi Just a couple of things 1) Some stories of interest in some magazines i have seen a) Some top US navy admiral was speaking at a Navy League meeting & was hinting that they may start looking at experimenting with C-130 herc style aircraft landing & taking off from carriers again (sure the Greyhound crews will appreciate Herc crews moving in on their turf b) New look for USN FFG's! Most of the remaining Perry class FFG's will be front line warships till 2015-2019. There are plans to fit the most modern 12 ( the ones with CORT combat system) with either a RAM or SeaRam missile system in place of the Standard launcher between 2007 & 2009, but it seems that, that plan will most likely be dropped. The Naval Reserve force of FFG's it seems have already had the Standard launching arms removed & the STIR antenna delated from its platform abaft the mast. So it seems the ship will be operating another 10 years with the 76mm Oto gun, the Phalanx, hull sonar (the towed arrays were consigned to warehouses 7 years ago), 2 sets of Mk 32 torpedo tubes & a Helo. When deployed overseas, they will also carry 2 25mm chain guns & have 4 sets of 50 cals. recent photos depict one of teh ships in th enew, gelded configuration at the Bahamian port taking a respite from anti-drug patrol duties, though she did not carry the 25mm guns (I wonder if they have or will change their configuration from FFG's to some some special name for a patrol boat or gun boat frigate- seeing that's really all they are now..so there is someones next model of the FFGs! 2) Thinsg to do in Holland.. I know of the maritime musem & the air force museum from the IPMS Holland links ( the the shops) , & also the Airborne museums... what else is there (military wise ) to see & what good shops are there (that covers everything) & their Amsterdam (if there is one) section where & when does it meet? email address perhaps 3) Also going to Belgium -(seems the IPMS Belgium site is down) , have seen a few good military museums, so what museums I might have missed & what about hobby shops . where does IPMS Beligium meet? 4) might even pop into Luxemberg for day trips from Brussells...some good museums there....any good recomendations? ( i am into anything military, so best armour, aircraft, planes ) 5) well only a week to Canberra, so see anyone going there (though will not be bringing any ship kits - please dont hit me..just an armour kit & Sci-fi..please dont hit me even harder!!!) thanks in advance Andrew ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Mark McKellar Subject Paper kit on ebay I have a paper kit listed on ebay among several other ship kits. http//cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3194173338&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1 I've never seen a kit like this before - I'm strictly plastic and resin.
