Subject: SMML VOL 2513 Date: Mon, 24 May 2004 02:12:04 +1000 SMML is proudly sponsored by SANDLE http//sandlehobbies.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODELLERS INDEX 1 Things in Belgium 2 WWI Subchaser documents and photos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD INDEX 1 WTB 1/144 Schnellboot Klasse 143 2 model shipwright ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MODELLERS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Erwin Van Deynze Subject Things in Belgium >> 3) Also going to Belgium -(seems the IPMS Belgium site is down) , have seen a few good military museums, so what museums I might have missed & what about hobby shops . where does IPMS Beligium meet? << IPMS Belgium site can be found here http//www.ipms.be You can find a calender with most model shows, military and airshows there. The IPMS Belgium show is usually in the fall in Wieze. Military things to see in Belgium first of all the Royal Army Museum in Brussels at the Cinquantenaire, with next to it the Brussels Air Museum. Both are free. Very nice collection, especially WW1. site http//www.klm-mra.be/ Best time to visit the Air Museum is on weekdays, They usually close the upper galleries on saturdays, because of staff restrictions. The exhibits can be a bit dusty, as the planes are maintained and restored by a group of volunteers, who only work there a saturdays. If you do visit the museum on a saturday, it's worthwhile stopping by the 'garage' and have a chat with them! Very friendly and helpful people! The Army museum is at the time busy at a major refurbishment in the technical hall (development of the fire arm). The historic hall has some nice exhibits. But the best is the WW1 hall with major exhibits as a Mk IV in original livery, a Whippet and a FT-17 on the armour site and artillery pieces and a replica Dr.1 on the plane (all the other WW1 planes are in the Air museum. Also very good is the 'I was 20 in '44' exhibition' It starts in a reproduction of a typical shopping street during the occupation, at the end of wich you enter a small food store. From there you walk through the living room with the code messages of radio London playing on the radio. A door disguised as a cupboard leads you to the exhibit on the resistance and the holocaust. Very nice! Outside are some armour ranging from WW2 to more modern. The army museum closes over lunch, but you can easily go to the Air museum then. As you've read the emphasis lies heavily on WW1, easy understandable seeing the impact WW1 had on Belgium! Regarding WW1 a visit to the Westhoek is a must! Major starting point is Ieper (Ypres). First of all the Flanders Fields Museum. In the evening the 'last post' at the Menin Gate. Scattered around Ieper are a multitude on cemetaries, musea, memorial sites, etc... also a must is Talbot House in Poperinge. You can spend easily several days in the region! Chlorine gasses were used for the first time at Ypres by the Germans and is also the site of the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917 (Paschendaele rings a bell?) Have a nice trip! Wienne ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Todd Woofenden Subject WWI Subchaser documents and photos There are some new items on www.subchaser.org that some of you might be interested in, including * Scan of a document titled “Submarine Hunting by Submarine Chasers,” a document that was circulated probably sometime in mid-1918, which provides some fairly specific detail on chasing tactics. Interesting components are lists of pros and cons of various hunting techniques, and hints concerning what subs are likely to do in various situations. (Located in the Document Archives section) * Several image scans from a collection of chaser photos from the Special Collections department at the University of Virginia Library. (Located in the Chasers section) * Store Invoices. Scans of several supply invoices for armaments, associated with the outfitting of the chasers for the Northern Russia expedition in 1919. (Located in the Document Archives section) If you visit the site, please drop a note in the Guest Book or Discussion area, and let me know what you found useful. I have been working on tweaking the site to improve navigation, and value any feedback you can offer. Thanks! This is the "Corvette" that is equipped with two Oto-Melara Mk76 76mm guns and torpedoe tubes. It has been out of production for a while, but I am hoping someone in the ranks of SMML can locate one or better yet, two of them for me. I already have the other version that has the RAM missile launcher in place of the aft Mk76 gun turret. If any of you can help out, please post here with your eMail address so I can add you to my address book to allow correspondence off list.
