Specifically - Where thay always the same size or did their prefab nature result in various sizes? - Were they ever armed? - Did any of them ever fall victim to Axis naval forces? A nice, simple drawing would be nice, too! Dave @ The PT Dockyard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Harold Stockton" Subject Scale model of the "Santísima Trinidad" Here is a site that lets you build the "Santísima Trinidad," the largest ship in the world of the 18th century, the 140 gun (three gun-deck) Flagship Spanish line ship that fought as the flagship to Admiral Don Baltazar Hidalgo de Cisneros at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805; at http//santisima-trinidad.astillero.net/ . This is one big ship, even when one considers the size of the HMS Victory. As the plans offered are to either 1/75 or 1/100 scale, these are going to be massive when finished. The official plan-sheets shown are for the "Box-shapes" or lofting sectional views, Longitudinal sections, Deck and boats, Masts, Standing rigging, Manoeuvre rigging, Tackle and manoeuvre, Description of the artillery, Anchors, Detail constructive and the Escutcheon (rear plate). Since these are the official Spanish Navy Museum plans of this ship, they are accurate. And, theya re so beautiful that they could be professionaly reproduced as finished artwork for hanging on your walls. A must have. I accidentaly stumbled onto the German model company of Zundmeer at http//www.zundmeer.de/my_html/scale700.html , who make various scale metal ship models. I was intrigued at what 1/700 scale ship models that they produced and they do the Pestalozzi; a three-mast bark, Sea Cloud; 4 mast bark, Potosi; 5 mast bark, Royal Yacht Britannia, Seabourne Legend and the Silver Cloud; with the last two being luxury cruise-liners. The sailing ships come with a complete show-case. In 1/400 scale there are various sailed barks, pilots, luggers, lighters, training ships and others, along with light-ships, and various assorted unusual subjects. These come in both full and waterline modes. The 1/220 scale produced smaller craft such as police-boats, government steam, lighters, scooners adn fishing vessels. Various launches and tugs make up this company's 1/160 scale line. The HO 1/87 scale has mail launches, canal barge and steam tug. And finally, there is this company's bottled ships. These are very nice and unusual models to consider for your collection. There are some very impressive ships on this site such as the 1901 Russian Cruiser Bayan in 1/150 scale at http//modelyard.narod.ru/russian/models/bayan.htm . This model is 910 mm in length and 590 mm in stature. The 1893 Russian Torpedoboat Tosna at http//modelyard.narod.ru/russian/models/tosna.htm , is in 1/40 scale and is 900 mm long and 300 mm tall. And, the 1937 battleship Kafkaz at http//modelyard.narod.ru/russian/models/kavkaz.htm , is in 1/150 scale and is 1100 mm long and 320 mm tall. Some of their laarge scale finished models of racing scooners are listed for sale at very healthy prices of between $ 850 and $1100. I'm sure that they are fine models, but I am unsure how those prices rate at similar modes over here are. These are definitely very fine examples of model ship-building and should be seen to be believed. Harold Stockton Happy Modeling ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Ned Barnett Subject Schedule for my History Channel appearance Thanks to all who've sent me such a wealth of congratulatory notes on my two upcoming appearances on History Channel, and on my "promotion" to "historical consultant" on the second of these two appearances. I now have a confirmed schedule on the first program. D-Day Tech Airs on Thursday, June 3 @ 10pm ET/PT Here's the History Channel's promo on the program By the spring of 1942, Hitler had made a fortress of Europe, and the Allies began to plan the biggest invasion in military history. The history-altering success of the D-Day Invasion depended on innovative engineering and technological advances. This is the story of those scientific and mechanical breakthroughs--the overwhelming array of landing craft, specialized weapons, and ingenious electronics--used to breach Fortress Europe on June 6, 1944. TV G The other program I'll be on, WW-I Tech - the program on which I'm both an on-camera "expert" and a credited historical consultant - is tentatively scheduled for July 28th. When I know more I'll pass it along. All the best Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From DRPREUL@aol.com Subject US Naval Academy Announcement On June 12th Master-model builder in miniature Lloyd McCaffery will be giving a talk on his modeling/wood-working techniques and carving. A look in the phone book should find the address but it was central Warsaw.
