While I do not wish to tread heavily on people's faith and beliefs from both sides of the equation, I would like to see this modelling thread treated as such - a legitimate modelling subject. For those who believe it's fiction remember that we have dealt with modelling fictional craft in the past eg USS Seaview, the Nautilas and others. Please refrain from going too far down the dogmatic track on whether or not it existed. Remember that we have people on this list with wide and varied beliefs. Please take spirited spiritual discussions offlist as this is really not the place for it. Shane ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Randy Ward Subject Re Noah, God and the ark vs. the USS Nimitz >> I'm not getting into a discussion about whether God knew more about marine engineering than modern naval architects but as an omnipotent being who is everywhere anyway, I suspect that his (or her) need to know of such matters was rather limited by comparison. << If I may suggest...we be very careful to stay on topic. We vary in our spiritual beliefs. However, the Ark of Noah is a historic vessel. So, sticking with the documentation provided, both in holy writings and modern-day observations (yes, there have been plenty), there seems to be ample proof that such a vessel existed, and likely still does on the mountain called Ararat. >> Or maybe a ramp, like an LCT. << A ramp, yes, likely. A door, definitely. >> Or was it RO-RO? << 'Don't know how the wheel figured into movement of animals and food here. No recorded connection with Troy. 8-0 >> How was the forage stored? How was it distributed? << Distributed by the crew of eight people. >> How did they feed the carnivores? << Very carefully. ("Oh wife! Do you have another Band Aid? Or a tournquet, maybe?") >> How big was the rudder? How many crew on the tiller? Did it have sails? Paddles? Oars? << No need to steer from aboard. Destination was, as documented, pre-determined by external command source. >> What on earth did they do with all that manure? << Well, Noah had a vineyard afterward. Maybe the land there was extra fertile? Cap'n Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "keith" Subject Re Noah's ark Hi SMMLies, I really don't think the Ark had a rudder. What is there to steer with no power. The Ark was probably a big barge and like I said 450' X 75' X 45', about the size of an APA less the boats and booms. Keith ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From David Wells Subject Re GREAT FIREPOWER PHOTOS Ulrich Rudofsky (URUDOFSKY@aol.com) wrote >> This photo of the USS IOWA demonstrates firepower at its best. Are there more photos of battleship power that can top this? http//www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/dod/8505379.jpg << This is indeed an excellent display. Here are some others. http//www.bb62museum.org/images/bb62firing3.jpg http//www.bb62museum.org/images/BBNJ11.JPG http//www.bb62museum.org/images/nj-2.jpg "There seems to be something wrong | David R. Beatty, May 31, 1916 | http//home.att.net/~WellsBrothers/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Ned Barnett Subject Noah's Ark >>So, this Ark vessel. Bow doors like an LST? Or maybe a ramp, like an LCT. Or was it RO-RO? Cranes? Containers? << None of Thee Above ... (actually, a ramp is likely, but not established as fact) >> How was the forage stored? << In holds? >> How was it distributed? << By hand? >> How did they feed the carnivores? << Carefully - very carefully. >> Anyone calculated how many crew were needed? << Bible reports that it was Noah and his immediate family. >> How did they stop the 'passengers' doing what comes naturally; anyone remember the Trouble with Tribbles? << In the made-for-TV film, God put the quietus on the animals, and Noah did the same for the people. He was not popular - especially with his wife - for this decision. Seeing that his wife was Mary Steenbergen, I think Noah (in the film) was an idiot. >> Guinea Pigs and Gerbils can do the same thing, let alone greenfly..... How big was the rudder? << None >> How many crew on the tiller? << None >> Maybe no rudder, after all they managed to collide with a mountain.... << Yes, now you've got it. >> Did it have sails? Paddles? Oars? << Power of God >> Was it nailed together, or glued? << Yes >> I think Isambard Kingdom Brunel is a more worthy subject of study in the ways of inovative BIG ship design. << God might disagree, but I think that ol' Isambard is well worth studying, if only on account of his name ... >> PS What on earth did they do with all that manure? << My understanding is that the manure was used to brew the first Aussie beer Or maybe not (ducking and running) Ned ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Katz, Gene S" Subject "The Ark" By "The Ark", I don't mean HMS Ark Royal, but since the original Ark is being discussed, I thought of the following. G-d surely knew more about everything (including shipbuilding, naval arch, materials, units of measure, etc.) than did any of the humans at that time. According to the American comedian Bill Cosby, on an LP comedy record long ago, G-d dictated the detailed specs and bill of materials to Noah, and when he finished he asked Noah if he had any questions. Noah's first question to G-d was "G-d, what's a cubit?" Gene ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Tom Detweiler" Subject Re Manure >> PS What on earth did they do with all that manure? << A When God pulled the bath plug and the waters receded, the manure coalesced in Washington DC and became... CONGRESS. Oooh, man, I just couldn't resist!
