Matt Prager ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Kurt Van Dahm Subject Binks Airbrush The Binks Wren is very hard to find. Binks is still in business but they make mostly bigger spray systems and the parts for the Wren are difficult to get except direct from Binks. However, the Badger Model #350 is identical to the Wren. The Badger #350 is available at most hobby shops and art supply stores and is usually pretty highly discounted so getting a new unit will not be much more than just the Wren parts (if you can find them). Take care, Kurt Van Dahm Westmont, IL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Robert P. Mattis" Subject Re 1.1 inch and 20 mm gun colors Devin, It definately helps, thanks. Bob Mattis ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Randy Ward Subject Re Civilian merchant ships rule >> I've taken a break from building warships - got tired of painting everything grey. I just finished the NS Savannah and am working on two merchant ships right now. The 1/700 Modelwerks San Clemente class tanker and the IMEX Ro-ro. If only there were more to build and in a consistant scale. << 'Am still working on my Savannah, although it's taking a break. 'Got distracted by another project, and am currently building a Torrey Canyon. No known guns of any size, although probably a gray deck. I have all four of the IMEX kits. I built a Jahre Viking (the largest ship afloat), the SS America, and the R/V Atlantis - all in 1/1200. As for more merchant ships to build, get a copy of Bowen's "Miniature Merchant Ships", now in two volumes. They have lots of good drawings, and the neat thing is that you can just copy them to 200%, and you have 1/600 plans to match the Airfix liners! I do most of my merchant ships in 1/600. The books feature liners, freighters, container ships, and other neat stuff. I also get plans from books and elsewhere, and scan them, then print at 1/600 scale. An endless supply of projects! Cap'n Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Chris Drage" Subject Cruiser info Hi Shipmates, Need some bits of info on HMSs Edinburgh, Sheffield, Kenya as of Sept 1941 (Operation Halberd - to Malta) Kenya 1. Did she still sport those two 0.5inch multiple machine guns on the aft superstructure? 2. Where were the 20mm Oerlikans situated (mid 41 refit)? Two are plainly obvious on the top of Y Turret. 3. Deck colour teak or painted over????? AP507A????? Edinburgh 1. Camo All references suggest that she stayed in 507b mid grey throughout '41 but the on photo of her with the other two cruisers seems to indicate that she may have been repainted in overall 507A (dark grey). The photo in question does seem correctly exposed as the Sheffield looks 'right'. The sea colour matches the tone of the ship reinforcing the idea that she may well have been in dressed in 507A. 2. Where were the 20mm Oerlikans situated? Were the two offset 20mm singles placed on the stern by this time? Similarly, did she have two singles on top of B turret? Sheffield 1. Can anyone verify where those 6 x 20mm single Oerlikans were situated? I think that two were placed on top of B Turret with two more on the bridge wings as per the Ensign Book on Town Class Cruisers. The last two????? Any suggestions (within reason!!) gratefully received....... {¬) Cheers. I'm sure if they can't help you, they'll steer you in the right direction. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "George Peat" Subject Re 1.1 inch and 20 mm gun colors Hi guys, Reference item 3 covering 1.1" & 20mm Guns, The mounts and shields would be the colour of the ship camouflage [if any] at that point. The working parts would originally be the same colour, barrel mechanism covering plate but with use as in all armament the paint would burn off leaving the original colour of the metal and of course this would be oiled to prevent rust so the colour of the complete weapon would really depend on when the model is depicted. As new, refitted or at sea. I normally paint my guns the base colour and then dry brush over with a gun metal colour to show wear George Peat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Sell4853@aol.com Subject Re HMS UNDINE there are two photo's available on following sites if this is of help..... http//www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/undine_class.htm and http//www.southlakes-uk.co.uk/ships/hmsundine.jpg however excellaent information and photos available on ... http//www.hillbeck.plus.com/sa/Boats/Barrowbuilt/UV_Class/ apart from this there is a wreck site website (if that makes sense!) on http//users.pandora.be/tree/wrecksite/db/histories/histories_s_z.html?en which gives details of various ship casualities that may be of interest Regards from Norman SELLS Tenterden Kent UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Sanartjam@aol.com Subject Re Binks Airbrush Hi Rick, There is a company here in San Antonio, Texas, that has been able to get parts for a Binks Wren airbrush. Contact me off-list and I'll get the information for you. Art Nicholson ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "William B. Smallshaw" Subject Re Civilian Merchant Ships More suggested civilian merchant ship kits in 1/700 (consistent scale) are available from Loose Cannon. They include a Victory (VC2), a very nice T2, and an equally nice C1-M-AV1. You can check these see these kits at http//home.earthlink.net/~loosecannonproductions/ If you can find one, there is a C3 in 1/700 molded a few years ago by Naval Works. The mold was purchased by Jim Shirley Productions who did a limited run. Now if we could just get a C1 (model B preferred), a C2 and a C4. Bill ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From AAA Hobby Supply Subject Re Civilian merchant ships rule >> The 1/700 Modelwerks San Clemente class tanker and the IMEX Ro-ro. << Be careful, the Imex Ro-Ro is in reality the MV Cape Knox (T-AKR 5082). The MSC bought her in 1995. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Chris Murphy Subject HMCS Bonaventure in 1/96 scale We are considering manufacturing a 1/96 scale fibreglass hull, flightdeck and island of the HMCS Bonaventure in kit form. The Bonaventure was a Majectic CVL built in Ireland, this class of carrier served in the RN, RAN, and the RCN as well as several other Navys throughout the world. What we are trying to establish if there is enough interest in the modelling community to support such an investment. Any and all feedback will be appreciated.
