It also provides descriptions of the listening equipment on the chasers that I suspect are not available anywhere else. One of the signal pages is cropped because of the tight binding. I'm going to hand-type or re-scan that page, and will post a better version of it soon. * I have just started to proof read and post text scans of the rare, out-of-print book by Hilary Chambers, "United States Submarine Chasers,"a contemporaneous account from a chaser commander (published in 1920). If you have looked for a copy of this book, you know it's pretty much not available anywhere, unless you want to spend a couple hundred dollars. Maybe some day someone will run another printing. One can only hope! In the meantime, I hope that by putting up the text, this little gem will stay in circulation. Look in the "Subchaser Stories" section for it. The first five chapters are up now, and I will be posting more chapters over time. Some non-modeler-related content you might still be interested in * For anyone out there interested in military collectibles, I've posted a scan of a period document on the WWI Victory Medal, "Bureau of Navigation Circular Letter No. 125-19." (also in 'Archives") This is one of the first (maybe the first) notice circulated to Navy officers concerning the issue of the medal. (By the way, if you collect these medals, please understand that most of the Navy clasps sold on eBay are fakes. FII, FIIa, and so on, are Laslo designations of FAKE clasps. The dark brown ones are fakes. Those with uneven rope segments are fakes. The ones that don't have the rope border, but are cast to look like the Army clasps are fakes. Don't be fooled by the slippery descriptions offered by sellers.) * There are a couple of clips from some old Subchaser Club newsletters in the "Subchaser Stories" section. Very entertaining stories. Hope to post more later on. * Finally (I think I might have mentioned this before), there is a photo array, scans of a set of photos of the US Navy engagement at Durazzo, Albania on October 2, 1918. This was the Americans' only major naval engagement of the war; and so far I haven't seen any of these shots published elsewhere. If anyone has, please let me know. I would love to see them in some other context. Among the shots is a nice one of the chasers heading into Brindisi harbor after the engagement, and two shots of the Weymouth, torpedoed at Durazzo by an enemy sub and escorted to Brindisi by the chasers.
