Hi All Just yesterday I received an e-mail for the Editor of Chrysalis Books, who informs me that my long out of print "The Fairmile "D" Motor Torpedo Boat" in the Anatomy of the Ship Series, is to be republished. You can stop scouring those Second Hand Book Shops. Just wait a little longer! Yours "Aye" John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From SeaPhoto@aol.com Subject Re Photos/references - USS New Jersey in Vietnam 68-69 Some of the best books on BB 62's Vietnam era are Dreadnought Farwell and Dreadnought Returns, by Neil Leifer, who aslo wrote another book that drew upon material from those. They are heavily illustrated with views of the ship at the time. Both are out of print, but can be found through the usual suspects - abe, amazon, bibliofind, and so forth. I just checked, and frogtownbooks.com lists Dreadnought returns for $ 25, which is a bargin. Can anyone help? Regards Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject Re Photos/references - USS New Jersey in Vietnam 68-69 Photos of the present state of the USS New Jersey are on the SMML website. Ulrich Rudofsky ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From David Wells Subject Re Photos/references - USS New Jersey in Vietnam 68-69 "Adrian Webster" wrote >> I'm building a 1/350 NJ for the Australian Vietnam Veteran's Museum and seek assistance with reference material. Particularly any (economic!) books containing images/plans covering the NJ's service in Vietnam. Specifically I need to find the modernisation/conversion changes made at the time. << One easy spot is the Battleship New Jersey Historical Museum Society's "Photos" page. http//www.bb62museum.org/photos.html There are only 5 pictures from the Vietnam era, but Stu Chalkley has given me some more stuff to add in my copious free time. (HA) If you can find a copy of Paul Stillwell's "Battleship New Jersey An Illustrated History", (ISBN 0-87021-029-7) it has a chapter on the Vietnam era with many good pictures. If you're REALLY lucky, you might be able to find a copy of "USS New Jersey The Navy's Big Guns" by Robert F. Dorr (ISBN 0-87938-285-6), with some really excellent photos by Neil Leifer. >> If anyone can let me know (Steve Wiper?) if the "Warships Pictorial - USS New Jersey" would be useful in this case. << Yes. It has some pictures from the Vietnam era, and as usual, Mr. Wiper has turned out an excellent quality volume. David R. Beatty, May 31, 1916 | http//home.att.net/~WellsBrothers/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re American naval uniforms A few years back the U.S. Navy enlisted men's uniforms were changed, under the aegis of Admiral Zumwalt, I believe. The traditional "Sailor's Suit" (bell-bottomed flap-front trousers, pullover middie blouse, and small white hat gave way to a uniform that looked a lot like a chief's (straight legged trousers, white shirt with a necktie, and a visored hat). And if I recall correctly it was optional. Even in Boston we saw very few of the new style, and now we see none. Can any SMML people tell us what happened ?
