Batch 1 comprised eight ships converted for Ikara; Batch 2 comprised seven ships converted for Lynx and Exocet (four of the seven were later converted again for towed-array sonar); Batch 3 comprised five ships converted for Lynx, Sea Wolf, and Exocet. The batches are covered in detail (except for sonar and EW) in Richard Osborne and David Sowdon, Leander-class Frigates (World Ship Society). To any SMMLer who is interested, I'll e-mail a chart that details the sensors and weapons (even EW and ASW) of all the RN Leanders (26 of the total of 44 built worldwide). It's designed to print on one 8.5-inch by 14-inch paper sheet. Also I have a similar chart for Canada's St. Laurent class frigates. Special Thanks to Axel from Moenchengladbach Frank from Texas (Thanks for the pics, hope, i can do it as well.....) and Dan K. (still donīt know why it didnīt work) for offering their help. Itīs good to know that youīre not alone in this world of ill-fitting parts and missing instructions ;-)) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "David N. Lombard" Subject Re Revell Goethe Rhine Steamer From David L Miller >> Does anyone know where the Revell Germany Rhine steamer Goethe is availabole? Any other info on this kit will also be appreciated. << If it's a side wheel steamer, then I'm fairly certain I just saw one in a toy/hobby shop in Heidelberg. Can't remember the name of the store, but it was in a small multi-level mall on the north side of the Hauptstrasse at the Bismarckplatz (and Sofienstrasse). They also had two of the 1/72 U-boats, plus a good selection of other Revell models that I hadn't seen in the US. David N. Lombard Rossmoor, Orange County, CA N 33 deg, 48', W 118 deg, 5' ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Bill Weckel Subject Re Kuznetsov CV Anyone know the current status of this ship? Is it operational, and, if so, what fleet is it assigned to? Not having a steam catapult, do they have a strike aircraft that can get off the deck with a decent ordnance load? What ever happened to the Kiev CV's? TIA, Bill Weckel ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Masashi Ito Subject Re HobbyLink Japan Hi, >> Does someone can give me the e-mail adress from Hobby Link in Japan? << They have several e-mail addresses, depending on what to ask them. So, visit their website at www.hlj.com, and click on "Contact US" which you will find around the lower-left corner of the home page (above the logos of the credit cards they accept). Best, Masashi ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "roger buckley" Subject goethe rhein steamer http//www.modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=248 just a google search with rheindampfer regards roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Leonard, Michael W" Subject Re American naval uniforms The 1970s coat-and-tie dress uniform for US Navy male enlisted personnel was not a success for several reasons (cost, material, practicality aboard crowded ships, etc.) and was phased out circa 1980-82 in favor of the traditional style. The only part that was retained was the "winter blue" uniform navy blue shirt, necktie and straight-leg trousers worn with the round white hat. MWL Reston, VA USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "keith" Subject Re American naval uniforms Hi SMMLies, About the Cracker Jack uniform. While aboard the USS Inchon we were all required to have them e-6 and below no later then mid. nov. 1982. I remember this because we had a Capt. inspection. I went to boot in Oct 79 and was issued the stupid "ice cream suite" I was very very disappointed because I was expecting to have the cracker jacks and look like a real sailor not some have fast milk man. Sorry no offence to the milk men out there. anyway we all had to have them and what really got under my skin was I only needed to wear them once just for that inspection. After that I was soon to get out so there went $75 bucks but I still have them and can just barely squeeze into the top, forget the bottom. So there you have it, my cracker jack tale. ps, this may be different per each command as in dates they were required. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Sell4853@aol.com Subject ITV (UK) 'Making Waves' (HMS GRAFTON as HMS SUFFOLK) For those of us 'Brits' that may be interested in footage of RN vesssels don't forget to set the VCR for 2100hrs Wednesday July 7th.on ITV1(UK viewers) This is the start of ITV's latest fictional drama series with the main action revolving around the type 23 frigate HMS GRAFTON that doubles as the fictional HMS SUFFOLK. With a budget of around Ģ1 million an episode it took 5 months filming on this Ģ150 million worth of ship with a fuel cost of aprox Ģ4,500 for 12 hoiurs, so lets hope that SMMLers can view some of the finer details of the ship etc. Bet they don't show some of the real crews genuine tatoos !!!! Norman SELLS Tenterden UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "William H. Shuey" Subject Re Trumpeter1/350 scale Nimitz class carrier >> I have a question about the upcoming Trumpeter1/350 scale Nimitz class carrier. I was wondering if anybody knows if there is going to be an upgrade kit to bring this up to modern day Nimitz (I.E. CVN -76 The big Gipper) I do no know about everybody else but doing a 1975 version to me is just lacking big time. << The word I have heard is that there are to be two versions of the kit, depicting "The Big E" at different times in her career, so watch out for the one that looks closest to your requirements. Bill Shuey ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From "david harris" Subject Revell 1/72 scale U Boat photo etch Anyone know anything more about the White Ensign Models photo etch set for the boat. It has been posted as coming soon on their Web Site for many months now. Is there anything more known yet as to an ETA and what it will contain? Alternatively, has anyone else yet released a photo etch kit for the boat? Thanks for any info. David. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From MPMenache@aol.com Subject Re Revell Goethe Rhine Steamer Have you tried the web site for info? michael ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re Latest US Navy enlisted men's uniforms Thanks for the remarks about the Cracker Jack uniforms. Am I correct in my observation that the current dress blues are really black ? They also seem to be made of some synthetic material. How do the present-day sailors like this material ? Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From PAUL TOSCANO Subject Re Hobbylink Japan Hi Detlef, If you click on this you will go to their English site. http//www.hlj.com/ Paul ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From Ray Bean Subject Re TRUMPETER 350th upgrade..... It will probably be some time till we see a CVN 76 island....lets get the kit out first before any of the resin folks decide what to do with it. Bear in mind there are scheduled to be 4 CVN kits, the first two will be as in 1975-1980, the last two will have the upgrades such as mast domes, satcoms, and CIWS sponsons, and probably an updated air wing. Basically any CVN looks like a floating flat iron without any birds on the roof, but back then the birds were very colorfull and eye catching (eye candy??) and a deckload of birds of that era will be very very nice. Perhaps we can talk Nautilus into a Reagan CVN 76 island, as soon as some good photos and plans are available.
