Am not sure what the enlisted men wear, but I suspect it differs as well. Was at my son's promotion ceremony to fire captain last night (brag, brag) and their uniform now emulates that of a bus driver. Gone are the old uniform hats that distinguished them from other uniforms for so long. For a while they wore Eisenhower jackets and I must say that it gave them a sharp appearance. Admittedly a traditionalist (as are fire fighters) I must say that new is not always best. At least they've retained the old leather helmets, which, though heavier, gives them more protection than the modern composite ones. A salute to those of you who can squeeze into your old uniforms. (Actually, I'm a little lighter than I was when I got off active duty, but the beam has changed a bit!) Kinda wish I still had my old winter blues, summer khakis, and dress whites! The only thing I retained is my hat, shoulder boards, and sword ... the latter being my father's originally. Al ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From NAVYDAZE@aol.com Subject Bell-bottom trousers Doug you are correct about the 14 buttons but only 13 were showing. The 14th was on the sash only and hidden under the flap. Mike ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Don Macdonald" Subject APA ships I see someone is talking about The APA ship( transport ships.) Just a note There is an old movie out called Away all Boats in DVD and Not sure on VHS have not see it in that format , IT is about a captain and his APA good shots of the ship and other APA ships and the movie is not bad ether, Hope all of you have a nice and safe 4th. DON That Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Von_Zipper@webtv.net (Bull) Subject Re Bell-bottom trousers Right you are Doug, button #14 is the top one on the waist band. It's not in line with the others and messes up the 13 colonies story, so it doesn't count, I guess. Another question My '90 issue pants are not actually bell-bottoms. They are straight leg the whole length of the inseam. It was my understanding that cinching in at the knee and thighs was a "tailor-made" conversion. Is this true of earlier issues? The dungaree pants on the other hand, are by design bell bottoms. Anyone taken a stab at the 2 stars on the jumper flap question yet? Bull ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From GWMcCue@aol.com Subject USS Missouri BB-63 I am looking for drawings of the battleship, USS Missouri. I know hey exist, but I do not know where to look. Can someone help me? Gary McCue ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "milstudy" Subject Re Photos/references - USS New Jersey in Vietnam 68-69 Once again the members of SMML have come to my rescue! Thanks to all those that replied both on and off list, and special thanks to Mark Krumrey and Barry L. Nickerson for pointing me in the right direction! Now to get cracking on the build. Adrian Webster Oz ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "donaldpmorgan@juno.com" Subject Royal Navy hospital ship Amarapoora I'm scratch building a model of the Royal Navy hospital ship Amarapoora. Can Anyone tell me the color of the stripe which runs completely around the hull, broken only by the red crosses ??? Also, what is the origin of that interesting name ??? Don Morgan ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "Tom Detweiler" Subject Re Crackerjack Pants >> 13 buttons ... one for each of the original states. We always said that it gives a gal 13 chances to say 'no'! << Hey Al -- Yah, until you get married, and then you'll hear all 13 THOUSAND excuses to say no! Maybe that's why some of us take up ship modeling. sort of....
