"Pura" is an Indian word (I don't know from which dialect) for city, as in "lion city" singh + pura = Singapore. My old Revell kit of the hospital ship USS Repose instructed me to paint her hull stripe green. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Subject Mr. Brown's question In response to Mr. .Brown’s question regarding Coast Guard uniforms…until the introduction of the “new” uniform in 1974, the CG followed the US Navy’s uniform specs in color, cut and material dating from the time of the American Civil War until the 1970’s. Many of my uniforms issued to me at Coast Guard boot camp in 1969 had “US NAVY” contract numbers on some of the labels of the Dress uniform. The only special uniform the Coast Guard inventoried prior to WWII was the Surfman’s uniform, worn by men of the Lifeboat stations. As the Lifeboat stations were “integrated” with the regular sailors from the Cutter fleet in WWII, the rating of Surfman was abolished in 1942 as well as the uniform. In an attempt to establish a new Service identity, Headquarters resurrected the Surfman’s style uniform in 1974. Gone were the US Navy’s officer, CPO, enlisted dress and work uniforms and replaced with a Uniform similar to the US Air Force in cloth weight and shirt color. The blue dye of the fabric was very different than that of the Air Force however. But like the Air Force, the Coast Guard has one style or “cut” of uniform, identical from Admiral right down the line to the newest Seaman. (Only rank markings are different) As for the woolen 13 button dress pants…I was issued 2 sets of traditional 13 button trousers AND 1 set of woolen dress trousers with a ZIPPER! We were told the Navy’s Uniform Board experimented in the 1950’s with “new” and time saving uniform items and the CG inherited some of them. But tradition won out and the “zipper” never found acceptance…the real uniform difference between the US Navy and US Coast Guard was the neat Donald Duck we enlisted wore in the 60’s and 70’s when the Navy had long dropped as a required uniform item. A lot of American civilians thought we were part of the German Navy (and were surprised we spoke English so well!) Except for the guys from down south, nobody could understand them (Only kidding!) Still have my Donald Duck hat… Sempar Paratus Mike Maynard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Subject Re Amarapoora >> I'm scratch building a model of the Royal Navy hospital ship Amarapoora. Can Anyone tell me the color of the stripe which runs completely around the hull, broken only by the red crosses ??? Also, what is the origin of that interesting name ??? << Amarapoora - or as it is sometimes spelt, Amarapura - is a city in Burma a country closely associated with her owners, the Henderson Line, who adopted Burmese names for most, if not all, their ships. The ribband on the hulls of hospital ships was green as distinct from peacetime troopers which had blue. Michael London ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "BRUCE BULLOCK" Subject 1930's USN destroyer bow decals Hello to all. I am building the USS Ward in 1/350 scale, finished in the 1930's standard navy grey scheme. I am wondering if anyone can help me find a source for bow numbers decals? Thanks, Bruce ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From m.c.schonfeld@kpn.com Subject Re Looking for photos of the NMM builder's model of Minas Geraes >> Does anyone know if there are any pix on the web anywhere? Google doesn't find any. Was disappointed to find there was only a single photo in Lavery's book. I have an inter-library loan request pending for "The Visual History of Ships and Sailing", but I understand this book only actually has a single photo as well. << Hello Daniel, The trouble with Internet (and computers) is that you have to spell correctly. Try "Minas Gerais" in Google, and you will find amongst others http//www.fleetairarmarchive.net/vengeance/History_BN.html Enjoy! lots of pix of the ship in all its periods (HMS Vengeance) Maarten ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Greg Anderson Subject OzMod's NEW 1/144 Grumman Panther is now available!
