I had read through this and couldn't come to my own conclusios regarding the funnel band's color, which is why I solicited the opinion of others. John, the reason I said the turret tops are jet black is because that is what the Tripod site says they were painted. Pehaps, according to the chart they were painted deckfarbe schwarz? I don't know how much blacker that would be than jet black. I was actualy going to use Payne's Gray. Do you think it would be more appropriate to try a lighter shade of gray? Perhaps ModelMaster Engine gray? Regarding the yellow, according to the accompanying color chart that would be deckfarbe gelb. Another person who corresponded with me off-list suggested it would be more of a straw-colored yellow. What do you think? Of interest is the photo of another ship of the class taken at about the same time which show the funnel bands in a darker gray than the one in the picture I provided yesterday. Thanks again for the help. I'm looking mainly for others' opinons that will help me make my final choice. Marc ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From JOHNEME@aol.com Subject SMS Deutschland funnel bands I would like to offer this link to those interested in WWI warships and operations. It has a little bit for everyone, and a lot for others; if it has already been sent to you, appologies to all. It includes the Tripod site on German Navy colors. http//www.gwpda.org/naval/n0000000.htm John Emery ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "DarekL" Subject USS McDougal as AG126 Hi All, I am desperately looking for any pictures and drawings of USS McDougal, Porter class destroyer after she has been converted into a radar picket vessel as of 1945. On my own I've got so far only one small profile drawing and a couple of pictures of her and AG 127 ( USS Winslow ).... I am hoping there are more valuable materials available out there and possibly one of the good souls on this list could share some positive light on it.... Any help would be sincerely appreciated... Darius ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject Colours of SMS .... The Tripod site says unequivocally (for late-war ships of the High Seas Fleet) >> To allow German ships to be identified from the air, the tops of the main turrets and armoured conning tower were painted Jet Black. After identification problems were encountered during the occupation of the islands of Oesel and Dagö in October, 1917, distinctive White circles were painted on the uppermost turrets forward and aft on capital ships, (here Derfflinger sports an additional circle on her DORA turret) while smaller warships and merchant ships carried them on the forecastle and quarterdeck. << But, like John Snyder, I doubt this is correct. From photo evidence in Battleships of World War I (Preston, 1970s) – a really dark grey seems more like it, because shadows still show. John Reid ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From 520086475121-0001@t-online.de (F. Pletscher) Subject SMS Deutschland Funnel Bands As far as I could find in my records, there is no evidence of funnel bands for Deutschland before 1913. But during the autumn maneuvers of 1913 and 1914, she had 4 blue funnel bands. Usually, these bands were also in use during the whole fleet year, i.e. from Oct, 1 until Sep. 30 of the following year. There is no evidence that any battleship ever had 4 yellow funnel bands. Also, most probably, funnel bands were discontinued when war broke out.
