I have tried local hardware stores, big chains (Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace, and True Value, etc.) with no luck. << Franklyn, It is available from McMaster-Carr in both fiberglass and aluminum and a whole lot of other more or less exotic materials. They sell only to industrial customers, of which I am one, but they don't have a minimum order so I can get this kind of stuff in modeler's quantities. Shipment is by UPS from Dayton NJ. Contact me directly. Gary Kingzett ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Norm Filer" Subject Trumpeter 1/350 USS Nimitz I do not have one on pre order, so cannot comment on that, but the release date agrees with what the Stevens rep. said at the IPMS Nationals in Phoenix last week. The test shots of both the Nimitz and the liberty ship as well as the modern Russian aircraft carrier arrived late after Roadway lost them for a while. I find it difficult to really determine a whole lot for looking at the sprues, but overall my lasting impression is (as expected) THAT THING IS HUGE!. Has both water line and full hull, both are one piece and the flight deck is (I think) three parts. That could be a bit of a problem to align the flight deck parts without a very noticeable joint. The flight deck is speckled with a whole lot of those little dimples for the tie downs modern US carriers seem to have so many of. My thinking is that those small dimples just might be a bit too noticeable. Generally when looking at pictures of the overall ship, they are not very prominent. On the test shots they were clearly noticeable from a ways away. They might blend more after painting. Also listed, but not shown were the USS Lexington and Saratoga. I asked about the release dates for those and what timeframe they had in mind for each ship. He did not give specifics regarding the release dates, but did indicate they were not coming until at least next year. The Trumpeter catalog shows a side view drawing/painting of the Lex and I would say it looks pretty much like 1941 or so. Clearly not pre war with the funnel stripe. But this is just a side view painting and could have no bearing on what we actually see. Also shown at another booth was the complete USS Nimitz air wing in 1/350th scale. Most reflected the US Bi Centennial color schemes many Navy squadrons displayed during 1976. This would agree with the stated vintage of the Trumpeter kit as "1975". The sales rep. stated that they do have later configurations and other ships in the Nimtiz class in mind. Norm ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Terry Wiltshire" Subject HMS Relentless Model Les I too would love to know the answer to this. The Type 15’s are a bit of a favourite of mine. I’ve searched through lots of my books looking for clues. I’ve looked in Naval Weapons of WW II by John Campbell, Norman Friedmans “World Naval Weapons Systems” published in 1989, Rebuilding the Royal Navy by Brown and Moore, an article in Warship Quarterly Number 6 by John Lambert about “HMS Rapid” and finally even Chris Langtree’s book on the Kelly’s in case the Type 18 conversion had a similar weapon. I’ve found absolutely nothing! The only tiny thing I noticed was that the RN liked to use a pattern of six depth charges so four from the turret thing and one each from the singles adds up. It’s a bit weak I know but it’s all I could come up with. The only other suggestion I have is to ask John Lambert who has of course done many drawings of RN ships and weapons from this period. Even if doesn’t know the answer I expect he would be interested in the pictures. Good Luck Terry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Cameron Lynch" Subject IJN Atago Colors Ok guys, the instructions on the Pit Road 1/700 Atago "1941" suggest that the ship was in overall Kure grey. John Snyder's new "Imperial Japanese Navy Greys A Ship-by-Ship Compilation" suggest that for 3rd Savo she would have been Yokosuka Grey. Comments from the peanut gallery? Which way would you go. I'd like to portray 3rd Savo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Alan Cameron" Subject Re Trumpeter 1/350 scale Nimitz >> I got a preorder email from Trident models for the 1/350 scale Nimitz. Looks like they plan to be received on or about the 10th of September. Anyone else have a similar update? << Hi Ray, 30th September was on the weekend's Steel Navy Message Board. Alan Cameron ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From CAPTNWED@aol.com Subject Toms Modelworks New Doors I have just received a set of the new Doors and Hatches which Tom announced 8/14. They are terrific. Door frames and doors are separate so they can be built in the open or closed position. Really delicate but I am sure they will be worth the effort. Another product of his are the Stair and ladder sets. You set the angle of the stair treads. Very cool. Much better than the stairs of yore. Thanks Tom for the efforts and Well Done John ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Kelvin Mok Subject Motorizing Revel S-boote Not too many moons ago there was an article on installing a RC unit and motorizing the 1/72 Revel S-Boote. Does any one remember how the access panels for the RC installation were arranged on the deck? Or will it be possible for a member to scan and email the article for me? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Fritz Koopman Subject Re Fiberglass rod stock Franklyn It may be neccesary to go straight to the source. Ryerson on 60 Everett Street, in Allston (mailing adress Box 1111, Boston, MA 02103). I believe their phone number is 617-782-6900, although it may have changed with the last set of area code changes. They have Fiberglass rods that they refer to as "Extren Rounds" in sizes from 1/4" to 2". They also have fiberglass extrusions in several other shapes such as square bars, round tube, square tube, and rectangular tube. Of course, they also carry aluminum and steel shapes in all sizes and types. To get the 3/16" you want, you may have to settle for the alluminum. The only other thing with them is they may require you to buy the full 20 length stock. However, sometimes I've found it cheaper to by the full 20ft length from them, than it is to buy a smaller Qnty. from a resale outfit. Of course there is always the luck factor (if you smile hard and show lots of charm), that if they have a run-off left over from another order that would suit you, they may just let you walk off the yard with it. This only happened to me once, and it required leaving the secretary my home number -0, Thank god she never called it. Best of luck Fritz K Salem MA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "John Snyder" Subject Re Putty A tip I picked up some years back from a wingy-thingy modeller is to use gap-filling superglue, set it quickly, then apply a bit of debonder to a soft cloth and rub lightly and gently over the seam until you've got a flush surface. Rub too hard and you'll work down into the seam and have to repeat. I've tried it, and it worked for me. Best regards, John Snyder White Ensign Models http//WhiteEnsignModels.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From "Ken Goldman" Subject X-Craft Camouflage Anyone have a description of the camouflage pattern X-20 and X-23 wore for their navigation beacon duties in Operation Gambit, off the Juno and Sword Beaches? All I know is it was three colors light gray, yellow ochre, Hookers green. Ken Goldman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From Randy Short Subject Snyder and Short website Snyder and Short are switching the shipcamo website to a new host. Yahoo has been worse than useless in our time of need. Until we get it up, email me and I'll send you a list in the mail, or answer your questions email. We always carry the Classic Warships and WR Press books, the WEM paints, and of course our paint chip sets. The new CW books Italian CAs of WW2 -$16, the Uboat type7 -$13 are available. Shipping is $4.50 first class, $2 book rate. That is for one or both books, not per book. Sometimes book rate is faster than first class-go figure. We do still have some of the out-of-print CW books. No S-boats though.
