Get back to me off group I can help as I have several sets of instruction here and also spare parts for the kit. [Left over from conversions] ATB George Peat ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From Jeff & Laura Herne Subject Scientists find human remains on Civil War sub Nice article...except it was the CSS Hunley, and those souls have been put to rest. This article was written in 2001... AP reported a few days ago that the USN is looking for a Union sub called the Alligator...in the same region as Monitor went down. Jeff ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From BGMarshall@aol.com Subject Re Need photo of PGM John If you could get me a bit more information, such as specific hull number, date and such, I'll check to see what the US National Archives has to offer in their collection. You might also want to check with the US Naval Historical Center's Photographic Center and the US Naval Institute. Thanks also to Les Pickstock who offered and anyone who has offered since I submitted this message. Sorry to cause any problems. Thanks very much indeed. Max ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "KLW" Subject Re Human remains on Hunley Thanks, but you are about 3 years late with this. The article is from March, 2001. All the remains have already been honorably buried. Winks ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "John Rule" Subject WWI camoflauged WWII destroyer - update >> A couple of months ago there was a discussion about a photogrpah of a A or B class destroyer at Scapa Flow in April 1940 in a WWI disruptive camouflauge style. I believe no-one was able to track this down. Recently I visited the Musem at Narvik - an excellent Museum about Narvik in WWII. On the wall they had a poor photograph encaptioned HMS Enterprise on guard duty. This was taken by a local sometime after the 2nd battle of Narvik and before the withdrawal. There are three ships in the picture - the Enterprise in the far back ground, a class D, E or F in the foreground (overall 507A or B, quad 0.5in, flat fronted bridge, and no markings visible) and the mysterious WWI camo destroyer in the middle. If someone can work out which destroyers were present with Enterprise in Narvik we may be able to finally solve this one. << To John in kiwi country Destroyers connected with the campaign in Norway are as follows- Second Flotilla = 9 destroyers of the H Class Third Flotilla = 5 destroyers of the I Class plus HMS Diana Fourth Flotilla = 8 destroyers of the Tribal Class Fifth Flotilla = 8 destroyers of the K Class Sixth Flotilla = 8 destroyers of the Tribal Class Seventh Flotilla = 8 destroyers of the J Class Eighth Flotilla = 9 destroyers of the F Class First Flotilla = 6 destroyers of the G Class + Codrington and ORPs Blyskawica, Grom and Burza Twelfth Flotilla = 6 destroyers of the E Class The above info is from Naval Operations of the Campaign in Norway (Edited by D. Brown) ISBN 071465119-2. There is a picture in this book which I think shows the destroyer of which you speak taken in late May 1940 at Harstad fjord. Unfortunately there are a lot of possibilities to choose from but none of them are A or B Class. If you need the actual ships names let me know and I will post them. All 72 of them!!!! Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Raising sunken U-boats Can anyone please tell me if the British ever raised any sunken U-boats of World War One? I am particularly interested in the German submarine that on September 6 and 7, 1918, was the victim of 55 depth charges dropped from 9 American submarine chasers in 30 hours as it lay crippled on the bottom in or near the entrance to the English Channel, most likely near the Scilly Islands. The story goes that after 30 hours of this Hell, the crew committed suicide as they realized they were doomed because the sub was indeed fatally damaged. September 6 was a busy day, as another U-boat, UB 87 , attacked a troop transport, SS Persic in the same area, but no lives were lost. The 87 escaped. But other instances of salvaged subs would be of interest as well. Any comments or information will be appreciated. Thank you. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Reid, John (AFIT)" Subject Model shops in Sydney All Aussies on this list visiting a different city, and those visiting Oz, should first have a look at http//pmms.webace.com.au/shops.htm which also lists mail-order supply houses like Sandle, our generous sponsors for this list. No doubt the shops list is not complete, but it is far better than anything else I know. It lists every outlet that I know of (and lots that I don’t, of course), but I do wish it would add a few more of the book-stores of interest to modellers, e.g. Napoleon’s in Sydney and Melbourne. The biggest model shop in Sydney is Hobbyco at 197 Pitt St Mall, Shop 402, Gallery Level, Mid City Centre. Catch train to TOWN HALL station, follow city map to Pitt St mall, the Mid City Centre is on the left (i.e. west) about halfway along the mall just past Myers, look to the top floor windows and you will see Hobbyco. Their own website is http//www.hobbyco.com.au/ The “Ships” aisle is almost directly ahead when you enter the shop, go almost to the far wall, past about 10 million wingy things. Mags and books – including some of interest to ship modellers, e.g. the Fine Scale Modeller titles – are on the left. When I was there earlier this month, they had a full aisle of injection ship kits, good range of 1/350 Trumpeters etc and 1/700 Jap manufacturers, some Heller 1/400 and Airfix 1/600. They seem to have phased out the Revell 1/1200 line. Lots of very large boxes, injection and wood. They have limited stocks of, but can order more from Germany, of 1/1250 diecasts. These are in a display case near the “help” station in the middle of the store, on the boundary between the plastic kits and the model trains. My own experience is that if you cannot get it in Hobbyco in Sydney you cannot get it off the shelf in any other walk-in store I know of, even in Europe, and must use a specialist mail-order firm instead. The one exception is the 1/1250 diecasts where the German shops, especially in Hamburg and Köln, are unbeatable. I also visited Avenue Hobbies at Chatswood http//www.avenuehobbies.com.au/ but this is at least a kilometre from CHATSWOOD station along Victoria Avenue, and has little to offer the ship modeller. The evidence is that I walked out having bought glue and Evergreen styrene sheet, nothing else. John Reid The Aussie in Rome, who was recently in Sydney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From Sab1156@aol.com Subject Re DML 1/700 Bismarck Greetings to all of you, I got the1/700 plastic models of the Bismarck & Tirpitz from Dragon and I am not happy with them. All japanese 1/700 scale models have the waterline-plate with the metal piece to keep the model streight, but I guess the chinese wanted to save mo ney and did not produce this parts! The result is a warped hull on both models. I tried to find a metal plate for the kits,to keep the hull on an even level, but had no luck! Does anyone has a info where I could get two small plates for the kits? best regards Detlef Hartwig ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From Brian "The Hodad" Dean Subject Re USS Olympia visit To Patrick Galleguillos Ah, yer made me have visions, lad. Ya put the sights and sounds right in my head, ah, what it musta been like, so many years ago, when man made iron float. Thanks for the epic picture. She's a find Lady, to serve a gallant Nation. God bless you, sir. And to yer household, safe passage....
