I am making a "generic" model. I served on PC 1142 in the Western Pacific, 1945 - 1946. My local library will get the book. Again, my appreciation, for your assistance. Thanks, Mike Donegan http//www.navydaze.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Allan and Crystal Plumb" Subject Re wingy-thingy modelers >> <> .... why? Is this part of the Titanic/Hood/Bismarck fascination wherein the interest lies in a first voyage/ battle action demise? << No. I find the urge to battleships amusing post submarine torpedoes and, somewhat later, aircraft with substantial payloads and speed. I find battlecruisers even more amusing for their "eggshells with hammers" design, which regularly got them sunk when they were dumb. I find the Courageous and Glorious to be sublime examples of the outer edge of battlecruiser idiocy. (Furious, even more so, but the guns were Too Big.) Thus, I would like to build an example thereof. (Obviously, from before their conversions to carriers, and sinkings.) Note 1 Although I periodically amuse myself by calling C/G/F battlecruisers then getting into an argument with those who say "no, large light cruisers", this time I won't play. Just this time. Note 2 In spite of or perhaps because of my opinion of the wastefulness of battleships/cruisers, they are my favorite ship to build. Go figure. Note 3 I'm convinced that testosterone is part of it all. -) Allan Plumb ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Roy.McKay" Subject Any good model shops/places to visit in Barcelona? Hi all, We are off to Barcelona weekend after next for some quality time and a bit of sun. (Seeing as it's rained only twice here in Ireland this summer, the first time was for 2 months and the second time lasted 2 months, I could do with a bit of sun). Are there any interesting places I should check out? We'll be there for 3 nights. Anyway, we will be staying very near to/just off the Ramblas, anywhere I should check out, I don't suppose I'll be lucky enough to find an aircraft museum? ;-) Interested in hearing about non-modelling/naval/aircraft places too. (apparently there is a shoe shop to die for, or so my other half has heard) Thanks in advance, Roy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Daniel Taylor" Subject Raising sunken U-boats Hi It's not the vessel you were asking about, but I have been in touch with a group in Scotland who have been investigating the wreck of a WWI U-Boot. It is U-77, a Type UE-1 Ocean Minelayer found by the East Lothian Diving Club in 1992. U-77 sit in 45 meters of water off coat of Dunbar sitting with stern buried or missing pointing up at 40 degree angle (looks like she is ready to rocket to surface). Periscope is up and gun is still intact. Dive planes are in dive position. Most of the outer casing is wearing away and a few holes in her side but she is mostly intact with hatches still sealed. I don't believe they intend raising her, but you never know... Hope that's helpful Dan Taylor West Malling, UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Mike Kear" Subject While in Holland >> An aussie currently in Holland... went and saw the Amsterdam etc ..looks good...just saw Arnhem & Oosterbeck today..tomorrow off to a mility musem at Utheizen or something like that ... hopefully trying to lay my hands on the Aritec ship kits... but seems difficult with no public transport...oh well..might order them from home.... see ya << (sorry if this has been covered before - been away from my emails for a while). Andrew, while you're in Holland, if you get the chance go down to Rotterdam. They have the most amazing maritime museum there, with some fabulous models. And there's nothing like sitting on the shore for an hour or two and watching the constant stream of maritime hardware coming by - big and small, old and new, always interesting. I had half a day to spare when I was there in 1993, and it took a short while to travel by train down to Rotterdam.
