Although we’ve never met, I have been lucky to follow some of your inspiring work for several years! I’m a list member for a few years, but have the “problem” on being on the east side of the big Atlantic. My last build was the Verlinden 54mm HL Hunley (with a few modifications on the spar torpedo) and am waiting for a CIM Turtle… (some of my work can be seen on smml and in armorama too – username skipper) Regarding the Aligator, I have in the box pile a 1/72 resin Lone Star Models… I’ve noticed on your model that you have made the “second” Aligator version, with propeller, instead of the more rudimentary roared / padled one. It looks excellent (as usual!) and you have resisted to make a diorama! Why not (also) a roar / paddled version? It looks so bizarre… It would be a good model to add to any sub enthusiast! Best regards from Lisbon – Portugal Rui Matos (aka Skipper) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Kerry L. Jang" Subject Re LE COUREUR, A lugger in 1200 Hi All, Its been awhile (work and life gets in the way!), but I've just finished a new minature ship model. It is the French Lugger, LE CERF, built to 1200 scale using plans from the Boudriot range. The link to the article is http//www.nutsnbits.com/kerry_coureur.htm Many thanks to Daniel Munoz for posting the article on his website (http//www.nutsnbits.com). There is a host of modelling tips there. I hope you like the model, and I'd appreciate any feedback. Best regards, Kerry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Patrick Hough Subject USS Arizona/Pennsylvania deck linoleum color I recently toured the USS Texas in Houston and noted the lower decks were a reddish linoleum. Anybody know a close color match for this, or a mix formula? Also, does anyone know of a source for a hull drawing detailed enough to show accurate plating seams, condenser inlets, and various bilge pump outlets, etc? Also, when her engineering plant was replaced and the torpedo blister was added, did this result in moving the main seawater condenser inlet farther aft? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Robert Lockie" Subject RN landing craft colours for the Rhine crossing in 1945 Learned SMMLies A friend is putting together the Italeri LCM-3 and is planning to depict one of the British vessels used in the Rhine crossings. He has a number of photographs showing them on the back of tank transporters (with British crews) being taken from the coast to the start line but they all look to be a dark colour and not the standard landing craft scheme used, for example, during Operation Overlord. Can anyone confirm if they were in an Admiralty scheme or possibly a USN one such as Ms21? Many thanks Robert Lockie Swindon UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Don Macdonald" Subject revell 1/72nd sub GOOD MORING all, First off I hope every body has a safe weekend MYSelf I may be able to get my ship hull's wet first time in 3 years found a neat pond again ;-) So I maybe able to do some RC ship running finely ? Question for any of you. As most of you know I am an RC ship builder . I see Revell has come out with a new 1/72 nd sub, Ok on this sub dose it have an open hull wear I can install RC radio gear and motors and props and so on? I would maybe do it as an Surface sub ? NOW What is it made of ? Is it any thing like the Dumas subs? any help would be nice before I go looking into it and get into NEW Problems ;-) Thank you DON FRom Portland That Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From BGMarshall@aol.com Subject NVA Swatow gunboat Question for the peanut gallery Does anyone have VALID information on the Chinese PLAN built SWATOW gunboat used by the North Vietnamese Navy in the mid/late 60s to early 70s. The information I have found in published sources seems to disagree with the information from people "on the ground (figuratively speaking anyway)." I would be especially interested in any drawings or pictures that might be available (as long as they are correct). Thanks, Chip Marshall Silver Spring, Maryland USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Subject USS Iowa I'm in the early stages of building the USS Iowa as she appeared during the Korean Conflict. Any help about reference sources or any other info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Don Paul ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From SANDYMOOR@aol.com Subject Re USS Alligator Hi Bob S. , Currently there seems to be a lot of other people interested in the US Navy's first submarine also. For the past several weeks theres been an on-going search in the Atlantic for the Alligator. The search team has a website with quite a bit of historical information also at http//www.sanctuaries.noaa.gov/alligator/ Regards, Sandy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "John Sutherland" Subject Re WW1 camouflage on WW11 destroyer In a recent SMML WRPRESSINC commented >> Since posting my request to see the photo in question, I have been sent said photo, of which I already had a print. The ship HAS to be one of the 'A' class because- Only ships of the 'A' class had all of the following, i short mainmast * ii bowl shaped searchlight platform between the torpedo tubes iii sweep gear on the quarterdeck iv narrow working area around the bridge rangefinder v bridge wings flush to front face of bridge The only exception to the above was the Acheron which had a tall mainmast, flat sided funnels and a prominent projection from the bridge face. * Only ships of the 'A' class had the short mainmast. All other classes had the tall mainmast.<< This is indeed helpful. When added to the sighting of another shot of the mystery ship on guard duty with Enterprise at Narvik it limits the options. Numerous sources all agree that of the A's Codrington, Amazon, Ardent, Acasta, Acheron, Arrow and Antelope were present in Norweign waters. Active was in Gibraltar during this period and Anthony in the channel. Achates is not mentioned (refitting?) The original photo clearly shows the ship as a 4 gun ship - eliminating Codrington (5 guns) - and having quad TT and full shield 4.7in - eliminating Amazon. The photos of Ardent and Acasta sinking show no dazzle camo eliminate them. This leaves Acheron, Arrow and Antelope. The records show Antelope was running convoys from Clyde to Norway, not Scapa. She was also damaged in April 1940 in a collision in Norway and took no further part in the war until the Dakar operation later in 1940, making it unlikely it was her in the later Narvik shot which was taken after the land battle. RN in Focus Vol 2 has a 39/40 era shot (based on equipment fit, full hight rear funnel and mainmast presence) of her in dark hull light upper works. These facts make it extremely unlikely our mystery ship was Antelope. This leaves Acheron and Arrow. WRPRESSINC eliminates the Acheron leaving us with Arrow. Thanks to all who participated in solving this mystery!
