John, you mention there are two photos, one of which I think I have, being the one taken at Narvik, probably during the evacuation. It is the one in the book "Naval Operations of the Campaign in Norway April - June 1940". I can't speak for any other photo, but are you sure the one taken at Narvik with Enterprise is definitely an A Class ship. My bet would have been on one of the ex Brazilian H Class; either Havelock, Hesperus or Highlander all of which took part in the campaign and from other photos of the class they seemed to carry the same general camouflage pattern to that carried by the destroyer in the Narvik photo. I may see if I can find the photo at the Imperial War Museum on my next visit to London, as a better copy may be useful. In the background of the photo, which was taken in May 1940, there is a troop ship which appears to have another smaller ship alongside which looks to be camouflaged. Comments welcome. Sincerely, John Rule ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Joel Labow Subject Revell 1/72 Sub >> I see Revell has come out with a new 1/72 nd sub, Ok on this sub dose it have an open hull wear I can install RC radio gear and motors and props and so on? I would maybe do it as an Surface sub ? NOW What is it made of ? Is it any thing like the Dumas subs? any help would be nice before I go looking into it and get into NEW Problems ;-) << Don, The Revell U-boat kit is styrene plastic. The hull is cast in 2 halves up to the deck level and IMO is thick enough to stand up to surface running and submergence to periscope depth. If I were going to do a R/C conversion I would re-divide the hull along the waterline forward and aft and over the tops of the saddle tanks amidships...this would give you much better access to the innards. Try getting a recent issue of the SubCommittee magazine...many have built submersible models in this size range and there are lots of commercial solutions available. Best regards, Joel Labow ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject Re Patrick Hough's Arizona I noticed that Patrick Hough is intending to include underwater thrrough-the-hull fittings on his model of the Arizona. Congratulations, Mr. Hough, for this is one of the marks of a careful modeler. I have seen some excellent models, but most of them omit this and other fine-tuned features. Other details of a carefully built model include correctly scaled (within reason) and colored rigging lines, pigsticks and commissioning pennants (on U. S. Navy ships), draped signal flags etc. on "stationary" vessels, proper downwind positions of signal flags etc. on sailing ships under way, less than neat decks plus bare poles (spars) on sailing ships displayed as undergoing extensive repairs (thus taking advantage of the opportunity to mend sails and keep the crew gainfully occupied at the same time), etc. Look carefully at the background of photographs of real ships similar to whatever you are building. A possible exception would be the showing of certain weapons (such as depth charges, portable machine guns, etc.) on naval vessels in a stationary mode. Navy Regulations require items such as these to be removed or stored below when not at sea. This could be exempted as sometimes the Navy Regulations are not always followed, and in the case of a model, inclusion of these items may be excused to demonstrate them. Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From Ralph Nardone Subject Korean War era Iowa(s) Hello, all..... Don Paul asked >> I'm in the early stages of building the USS Iowa as she appeared during the Korean Conflict. Any help about reference sources or any other info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. << I can't think of any on the Iowa herself, but you can get a lot of what you need from the Stillwell books on the Missouri and New Jersey ("Battleship New Jersey" and "Battleship Missouri", Naval Institute Press). If memory serves, there were some nice drawings in the New Jersey book that showed her general arrangement during various points in her life. I would imagine that the rest of the class was similarly (if not identically) equipped by Korea. I'd check my copies, but we just finished moving this week and everything is still boxed up on the living room floor. The New Jersey book is kind of hard to find, but the Missouri book came out in the past three or four years. There was another book on the Iowas, too, which may come in helpful--"Iowa Class Battleships" by Robert F. Sumrall, Naval Institute Press. Cheers! Ralph ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From Ken LeClair Subject Hobby Shops on the West Coast Hello All, I will be visiting New Westminster BC and Seattle Washington in the next few weeks and would like to know what hobby shops, (especially ship modelling), are in these areas. Thanks Ken LeClair, MS HMCS Protecteur Victoria, BC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Kelvin Mok Subject Revell 172 Sub >> I see Revell has come out with a new 1/72 nd sub, Ok on this sub dose it have an open hull wear I can install RC radio gear and motors and props and so on? I would maybe do it as an Surface sub ? NOW What is it made of ? Is it any thing like the Dumas subs? any help would be nice before I go looking into it and get into NEW Problems ;-) << Look up this webpage http//www.mikromodell.de/index_e.html On the left sidebar go to the item "Sources." In the box with a listing of "Components" go to "Submarines" and click on its highlighted "Homepage" You will see a picture of a UB VIIC moving in the water. Click on the link there. A German company already has a motorizing kit for the Revell U-Boat VIIC. Looks very good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From David L Miller Subject Revell 1/72 U-Boat In years to come, the Revell 1/72 U-Boat will probably be considered as one of the "great kits". It is molded in gray styrene plastic. I RC'd the Blue Devil destroyer for a client, and the sub would be much along the same lines. Having bought two of the kits, I am thinking of RC-ing one of them. I think it could easily be made to cruise with decks awash. There are several reviews of this kit on the internet, such as Internet Modeler. Regards, Dave Miller ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "Don Macdonald" Subject Got my hulls wet today Hey all hope every body is having a good weekend, I started off mind with a float of some of my ships today they ran nice, for got how much fun it was, Have been not able to do for a wile .
