I am a 20,000 Leagues fan and it looks like the Alligator could have been an idea model for Verne's fictional Nautilus, at least as portrayed in the engravings of the day, and the timing would be about right too-- Verne published 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in 1873. He would have heard of or known about the Alligator in researching his book. On another sub question, Model Expo has released a model from one of the big Spanish model builders, I forget which, of another unusual, wood hulled submarine called Ictheos-- it's very pricey at over $400 but is supposed to have been an actual submarine. Does anyone know about this model or about the actual boat? That was also very intriguing. Tom Detweiler in Hot California ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From "Jerry Slagle" Subject Re Hobby Shops on the West Coast >> I will be visiting New Westminster BC and Seattle Washington in the next few weeks and would like to know what hobby shops, (especially ship modelling), are in these areas << Ken, I was looking for a publication on my former ship and found it at Skyline Hobbies. They seemed to have a nice selection of models and books. Since I don't live in the area, I found the shop with the assistance of the IPMS Seattle group (Norm Filer, specifically, who was a great help). I'm including their website for you, which also list other hobby shops in the Seattle area. http//www.ipms-seattle.org/ Hope this helps, Jerry ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From Richard Rathgeber Subject Re USS IOWA Having done a USS New Jersey for a client I agree with the ref.'s Let me add that the best source is a cruise book of that era as it gives distinct photos of the IOWA during the Korean war. If I can be of help let me know ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From "Don Macdonald" Subject Battleship Photo Index BB-61 USS IOWA http//www.navsource.org/archives/01/61.htm Here is a nice sight for the person trying to fine information the USS Iowa it help me alot I hope this will help some one. Thanks Pwesty ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From Darren Scannell Subject Re Hobby Shops on the West Coast Hey Ken, I had lunch in the officers wardroom on Protecteur a couple of weeks ago when I had my tour of Esquimalt! If I'd known you were there, I would have tried to get in touch! Toured the base, Algonquin and Winnipeg as well. Burnaby Hobbies is the best ship hobby store, on Rumble at Royal Oak, I believe. About 5-10 min from the pier at New Westminster. Have fun! Darren Scannell ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From "\"Honest Bob\" LaBouy" Subject Help locating model of Sherman Class Destroyer Sean, I just returned from a rewarding and entertaining visit aboard the USS Turner Joy (DD 951) in the Bremerton port area, where she has been on display for several years now. Talking with one of the volunteer crew who man her these days, I am wondering is there a Forest Sherman class of destroyer model available in any scale (though 1/350th would be my preference) that anyone is aware of? If so, I would appreciate any possible vectors toward such a model. Should anyone have any questions or need some detail shots of the JOY, please don't hesitate to contact me. I suspect her outfitting is similar to many other US Navy warships of the era (1960-1982). I may not have taken what you need, but plan to make another longer visit aboard the JOY in the near future and will be happy to see if I can fulfil someone's needs. Thanks ahead of time for the assistance and cooperation. Bob LaBouy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From "John Sutherland" Subject Re WW1 camouflage on WW11 destroyer Hi John, The second shot is not in any book I have seen. It is taken by a Norwegian local. The ship is definitely NOT a Brazilian H class - the bridge is wrong for a start. Also the Brazilians had 0.5in quads - this thing has 2pdrs. Further, the camo on the Brazilian Hs is a highly simplified variant compared to this one. The camo on the photo I saw in Narvik Museum is a mirror image of the circulated one - looks nothing like the simplified H class scheme.
