Aside from Dark Gray, and not so dark Gray, can anyone give me a good Idea of what colors I should be using? Thanks. Rich Sweeney ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) From BGMarshall@aol.com Subject Re enlarging scale ship plans on a copier To enlarge or reduce plans on a copier, use the following math formula Divide the existing scale number (in this case 600) by the scale you wish the drawing or image to be (again, in this case 350). The answer to that equation is 1.714285... Multiply by 100 (to get the percentage) and you end up with 171.4285%. Some copiers use percentage, other use the division equation answer. This method can also be used with scanners and graphics programs. Chip Marshall Silver Spring, Maryland USA ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) From "Peter Chant" Subject Re Westland Wasp Good call Michael. I remember Albion also had a Wasp in the same green as her assault Wessex. The Wx were coded from A up while the Wasp was Z, but I do not have a note of her serial number. Peter Chant Plymouth ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) From Lone Gunman Subject Wasp conversion Thanks for the info. I got the information from an old issue of Scale Aircraft Modelling when they did the main feature on the Westland Scout & Wasp and my colour reference was a direct quote from within the article. The drawings were by Mike Keep. Apart from a few obscure books on British Helicopters in my local library and surfing the net for reference photos, its pretty hard. Once again thanks for the info I'll post some pictures when I get around to finishing the Wasp (after the MPM Defiant and the Trumpeter AN-2). Mike When I met Shane at the QMHE a couple of weeks ago I always imagined a taller bloke. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) From "Stephen Bolton" Subject Heavy cruiser Takao 1932-38 Hi can anyone help? I'm building a model of the Takao notice and am after some info on the after superstructure where the rear barbettes are. The front face (towards the hangar) has 3 doors and 2 somethings half covered by shields. Does anyone know what they are? Are they windows? vents? The only picture I have showing that face doesn't show those bits. It shows 3 openings for doors but not where they were finally sited when completed. Ant help would be greatly appreciated. TIA Steve ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) From "Don Macdonald" Subject ship plans I would sudjust going to a print shop and see if they can inlarge those ship plans it may work for ya. only any idea. I Think that would be the easy way out BUT keep an eye about Copy right laws as well. Don Macdonald The Portland Rustbucket ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7) From "Mike Leonard" Subject Re 1/144 CVN-65 Mark wrote - >> I caught that too.....any of our number crunchers come up with measurements for a kit that scale? Of course, I'd NEVER finish anything that big...I struggle to find time to finish 1/700 kits. << Check out page 7 of the October issue of "Fine Scale Modeler". There's an ad from Great Models Webstore for a Trumpeter "1/35 USS Nimitz Aircraft Carrier". Obviously a typo, or maybe a very very big box! MWL ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) From John Mianowski Subject enlarging scale ship plans on a copier From Patrick Hough >> I have a set of 1/600 scale ship plans and need to enlarge them to 1/350 scale. Anybody know the proper procedure, mathmatical formula, etc., for this? << Take the scale you have (600) & divide it by the scale you want (350). 600/350 = 1.714 Set the copier to enlarge to 171%. JM ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9) From Randy Ward Subject Re enlarging scale ship plans on a copier Patrick, enlarge by 71%, making the copy 171% of (or 1.71 times) the original. This number comes from simply dividing 600 by 350. (I use what for me is an easier method, as I do computer graphics. I just scan the original in, draw a box the correct size in Adobe Illustrator, then place the image and enlarge it up to match the box. 'Works every time, and allows me to print large art in pieces on standard size paper.) Cap'n Randy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10) From URUDOFSKY@aol.com Subject Re enlarging scale ship plans on a copier I don't have a formula, but the way I seem to understand it, a copier like a Xerox machine is not exactly proportional on the x/y axis. Anyone know the answer? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11) From AAA Hobby Supply Subject Re enlarging scale ship plans on a copier It is really simpler than it seems. It is a simple ratio. One scale over the other. Disregard the factional component of the scale. x = given scale = 1/600, which becomes 600 y = desired scale = 1/350, which becomes 350 (x/y)*100=enlargement percentage 600/350 = 1.7142857 (you know this is correct because you want to make them bigger!!) 1.7142857*100 = 171.4% (some copiers now allow decimal percentages) To make the plans smaller (1/192 to 1/350), simply "plug & chug" to get 192/350=54.9% ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12) From "Robert Healy" Subject Re Rumor control Alcon, Run a search on Google or whatever using "Sink ex" and you will come up with a bunch of current and past sinking excersises from all over the world (passing over the kitchen sink renevators of course). The last I heard the Oriskany was safe for the moment, the eco-greenies delaying the process for some reason or other. Regards to all, Bob Healy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13) From Fkbrown90@aol.com Subject 148 human figures SMML has done a good job of finding sources for 172 human crew figures. Now, can SMML please advise sources for 148 (1/4" = 12") human crew figures ? The "O" gauge Model Railroad figures don't quite measure up (no pun intended). Franklyn ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 14) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Re Enlarging scale ship plans on a copier Hi Richard, To enlarge 1600 to 1350, you’ll need to enlarge by 171.4% on a copier. The formula for this is divide what you have by what you want, and then multiply the result by 100. However, if you do this sort of thing often may I recommend an excellent software utility called Quick Scale. Developed by Mike Ristuccia, a fellow modeller, it takes the pain out of all your scale conversions. For more details, go to www.quickscale.net Michael D'Silva Victoria, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15) From "Michael D'Silva" Subject Re Diorama Solutions? Hello Rui, If Shane and Lorna, or anyone else on this list can’t provide you with an answer, try the message board at www.steelnavy.com Regards, Michael D'Silva Victoria, Australia ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16) From "Les Pickstock" Subject Re enlarging scale ship plans on a copier It's very simple devide 600 by 350 and the first 3 digits are the percentage required for enlargement 600 over 350 =1.714285 etc, so the ratio is 171% ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17) From "Robert Lockie" Subject Scale conversion No doubt this will be answered by a large number, but here is the process. Divide the denominator (the number after the ‘/’) for the starting scale by that for the target one. So 600/350 = 1.74826. Multiply this figure by 100 to get the percentage of the original that it needs to be, i.e. 174.826%. If your copier will not do decimals, I would go for 175%. This works in either direction (enlarging or reducing) except that when reducing, the multiplication percentage will be under 100%. Robert Lockie Swindon UK ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18) From Starline / Fleetline Subject Chinese Navy Colours Sorry to say, PLAN colour is nothing like Storm Grey the RANs colour. It is however very close to the CN colour. It has a definate VERY pale green hue totally unlike the RAN colour which is much darker and has considerable depth. I have seen both RAN & PLAN together and RAN & CN together, Only wish I had seen the CN/PLAN combination, to my eyes the CN has a touch of pale blue whereas the PLAN is very green in hue. For what it's worth, Kevin ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TRADERS, ANNOUNCEMENTS & NOTICEBOARD ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) From "John Snyder" Subject Market Query OK, here I sit with a sample of "Tropical Green" paint, as used on LOTS of USN PT boats in the South Pacific/Southwest Pacific. The powers-that-be here at WEM are reluctant to add this to the Colourcoats line, fearing it just won't sell well enough to justify production. So, are there enough of you out there to make firm commitments to buy if I add it to the line? Answers here or direct to me by e-mail.
